G4S security company planning to leave Israel, a landmark victory for the BDS movement

G4S, one of the world’s biggest security and imprisonment firms, has announced it plans to end all its business with Israel within the next 12 to 24 months.

Palestinians are welcoming the news as a major victory and a sign of the powerful impact of the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement.

But they also warn that pressure on the company must continue until it has actually ended its role in Israel’s violations of the rights of Palestinians, especially thousands languishing in Israel’s prisons.

The announcement makes G4S the latest multinational company – following transport and municipal services firm Veolia, telecom giant Orange and construction materials conglomerate CRH – to head for the exits in the wake of sustained campaigns by the BDS movement.

The illegality of Israel’s settlements has been affirmed by the United Nations Security Council, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, settlement policy is a war crime. Roughly 400,000 Israeli settlers now live across the West Bank and if you add the number of residents of East Jerusalem settlements, the total number rises to some 600,000. Despite this enormous number, Israel’s representatives in the West continue to pay lip service to the end goal of a Palestinian State. To square the circle, some suggest a distinction between settlers located to the ‘west’ and ‘east’ of Israel’s Separation Wall. It is an irony that the Wall, whose defenders insist was a temporary security measure rather than a land-grab, is now referred to almost casually as a border-in-waiting. In the first half of 2015, the number of settlement homes built in the West Bank increased 54.8 percent compared with the equivalent six-month period the previous year. In November 2015, Israeli authorities moved “to green light some 2,200 new housing units.”

It gets even worse when you listen to what she’s trying to report. She’s saying that the policy of collective punishment pursued by the Israeli government is a racist endeavor meant to strangle and suffocate the Palestinian citizens into submission, and the IDF scum are berating her, mocking her, and trying to tell her that she’s wrong [while the cameraman tries to encourage her to ignore them and keep on reporting]

The soldier to our left is continuously repeating “Allahu Akbar” in a taunting manner, while also mocking the Muslim call to prayer. IDF scum are literally berating a news reporter with racist and xenophobic taunts AS she’s reporting about their racist practices
