How you smoke your cigarettes, mostly. The voice you use to weep and pray. Hands beneath blisters. Give me time to learn, and I will: what languages you speak to yourself, what flowers you gather.
24 hours is a terribly long time to spend by one's self, so I sit on the concrete bench outside of Willard Straight Hall and try to join myself with the students walking by, with footsteps going in and out of the building's swinging doors. It makes me feel a little better. I know these days of solitude can bring wonder. I imagine a book on a blanket on the grass. A cup of tea in the morning. The HVAC hum and this pencil on the page. It's not so bad. I can be content in this.
dreams of loneliness — leave dishes in the sink. stack cups like rings of saturn. breathe deeply, watch your own shadow. speak to the air. ok, ok not to be gotten. leave the door open for the ghosts. leave an empty chair. a glass of wine or a clementine. echoes against a hollow sky. call the monsters out from your closet, out from underneath your bed. invite them to your table: feast. lips miming airy songs to dance to, but silently. read in the dark: write books of blank pages. pour water into the hours — they must be filled or they pass like stray, starved dogs through the alley. lie down anywhere.
Climate change is the defining issue of our time, bar none. If left unchecked, it will upend the world as we know it and kill hundreds of millions, perhaps more. It will destroy us if we don’t mitigate it, and we are rapidly running out of the time to do so. This is not a political issue, with partisan sides; this is about the survival of human civilization as we know it. If our leaders won’t work to adequately combat climate change, it is our responsibility to remove them by any means and replace them with leaders who will, even if that takes extreme measures. This could well become humanity’s most desperate time. We need to ensure that our leaders are working to stop climate change from the top down, almost regardless of the cost. Our future and our lives depend on it.
