I’ve scanned and touched up a few of my screenprints I made last year! These were a whole lot of fun to make; I really liked layering different ink transparencies and gradients to make different color effects. These are all hand-pulled and about 5 or 6 layers of ink.

You can get giclée prints of these at my Inprnt. Many of the originals are water damaged due to an unfortunate accident, but in some cases the damage isn’t too bad. If you are really interested in an original of something you see a print of, you can feel free to message me and we might be able to work something out!

This piece is a sincere homage to some of my favorite camouflage in the animal kingdom. Many people know of walking leaves and leafy sea dragons, but most nature mimics are relatively unknown, even to science! It often takes scientists a long time to discover them simply because they are so successful at blending in; several species featured in this piece were only discovered in the past few years. I think this sort of elaborate and near-perfect camouflage is fascinating and beautiful, so I inked and painted nine of my favorites to shed some light on a few amazing animals that might otherwise be overlooked.

This was drawn, painted, and is best appreciated at 18″ x 24″. It is available in archival quality through INPRNT at that size and smaller formats as well! They are having a free shipping event, so now is a good time to grab one!

Hey guys! Over the last semester I made some enamel pin designs as part of my thesis, and now that it’s done I’m excited to be able to share them with you!

There are two designs. One is a twist on glass frogs, which are a real thing! Planet Earth II has a bit about them. My version also incorporates paned terrariums into the design. The other design is a bunny with the frills and spots of a red spotted mushroom.

Diving headfirst into Spring Thesis! I’ll be making a themed collection of products (pins, buttons, totes, shirts, phone cases, more!) but first I had to settle on some creature designs to work from, and think about ways to use them on the physical items as well.

This is an illustrated recipe originally from my mom, modified to be vegetarian. If you’re not from Ohio, chili and spaghetti might seem an odd combo, but I promise it’s delicious! Made for my Edible Illustration class. :)

You might have seen this on twitter actually, if you’ve been following the Rogue/Alt National Park accounts. One of the most popular ones retweeted this, which I had posted to my account there after feeling compelled to draw something about the reckless laws being passed by our Cheeto in Chief which would endanger the integrity and inhabitants of our National Parks.

Call your representatives and stand up against laws which privatize public lands, attack the ability of scientists and the NPS to communicate with the public, and the attacks on the Endangered Species Act, as well as the other injustices signed into law in the past week!

Hello!

These were asked to my main blog, so I’m gonna post it there first and then reblog to my art blog, but in the future I would prefer art-related inquiries go to @combjellies.

The short answer is no, not right now.

I like taking commissions and working with people to make artwork that meets their goals and expectations while being satisfying to create. But, I am right at the beginning of my final semester in school and right now I’m very busy. If I’m going to do a job, I want to do it well, and in the past I’ve unfortunately taken commissions which turned out to be too much to have on my plate at one time. I’ve never taken money and then not completed an already-paid commission, to be clear! But I want to be sure I have the time before I open commissions, and I’m still settling into my schedule.

I will make a post at @combjellies if this changes. Thank you!

So I’m currently abroad in Japan for the semester (japanadventures tag on my main blog, if you are interested), and how that works is that we all take language classes for a few months, and then once we know enough Japanese to not die so much, art classes start. That happens around April. Fortunately, everything here is beautiful and I still get to draw all the time, so I’m quite happy.

Last Friday @gavi-gavi and I went to a nearby temple to look around and maybe do some sketching we met this surprisingly outgoing but very nice Japanese lady who had lived in L.A. for a bit and who then invited us over for tea. So we followed her 5 minutes to her apartment and she gave us tea and sweets and we talked for about and hour and a half and also? her elderly parents were apparently coming to visit and showed up early from Okinawa and were like “why are there gaijin in your house” but they were also very nice, haha. She had two very cute kids who she showed us pictures of and then invited us to their graduation in March!

Unfortunately, while we still have the slip of paper with her address on it, we lost the one with the address of the school. We had told her we were going to Nara on Sunday, and so when we went, Gigi and I each brought a blank postcard to paint the famous deer there. This is mine. We’re planning to send them both to her and ask for the address again, hoping that the painted postcards might make up for our carelessness.

The school’s scanner is really uh. well, it struggles, but this is the best I can do for now.

Your fancy griffons are amazing! I was wondering if you've ever done a griffon design of a common/non-fancy pigeon?

Thank you! I have, but not to finish. They’re fun to do, so I sketch them a lot based off of pigeons and cats that I see walking to class

Just curious, how did you use salt in your 50 things illustration project? It's very nice btw, I like it 😊

Thank you! I used salt to achieve some of the texture in the animals in places like the camel’s neck, the bison’s back and chest, and the musk ox’s fur. Wherever there’s sort of branching speckles, that’s salt. I do it by applying color, generously but not too wet, and then sprinkling the salt over the area. The salt draws in water and color from the area around it, and as it dries, the drawn-in pigment sticks to the salt grains so that when they are wiped away, a speckle pattern is left.

It’s a really unique texture, and I recommend experimenting with it if you like watercolor! Try using different amounts of salt on different levels of wetness to see what sorts of results you can get from it.

gouache over watercolor seemed like a better idea in my head, I think
