Yes obviously Koreans learn about WW2 in school, it's kind of an important war in Korean history since Japan's loss in WW2 is why Korea is no longer a Japanese colony. They do not learn about WW2 in the same context that we do.

Did you get an extensive lecture on Japanese Imperialism in your high school history class? Or were you just shown a video about pearl harbour? Did you specifically learn that the Rising Sun Flag is equivalent to a hate symbol in China and Korea because of the war crimes committed by Imperial Japan there? Or did you only learn about that later or even learn at all? We have a tendency to view WW2 through a European lens because that's how it was taught to us, but it was a world war, and there is so much more that happened besides what we are taught in school.

The Japanese were not only colonizers, they were the Asian Nazis. They viewed Chinese and Koreans as inferior and even subhuman. Their war crimes killed up to 14 million people, that's more than twice as much as the Holocaust. And I'm not trying to downplay the Holocaust by any means, so don't even try to spin it that way. I'm trying to get you to understand how horrible Japan was in WW2, and that Koreans were directly affected by it. Men were forced to fight for their colonizers. Women were forced into sexual slavery. If you you have a strong stomach, look up the Rape of Nanking to really understand the extent of atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers.

So yes, Nazi's were probably mentioned in Korean History 101 but most likely only in passing. Not only that, the sw*stika is a spiritual symbol in Bhuddism and is often used to denote temples on maps. So yeah, it is entirely possible that Chaeyoung was not aware of it meant.

I'm not saying you shouldn't criticize or educate her, by all means go ahead, but stop acting like she knowingly decided to where a hate symbol when she likely didn't. Stop acting like our history is the only history. Jewish people suffered greatly in WW2, and they were not the only ones.

Not only have other Koreans shut down the “they don’t learn about that” excuse y’all love to use. But they also understand how stupid she is for wearing that. Not once, not twice, but on 3 separate occasions. The shirt is literally limited and hard to find. She got it herself, not a stylist but HER. Trying to flip this and make it seem like people are being “Eurocentric” (as if only Europe was affected by the holocaust) is so nasty and vile.

I can’t even say I’m surprised y’all are defending this. But the bar was already low and somehow you guys managed to go even lower. Take your heads out of your asses and understand how incredibly serious this is. She wore that in a city with one of the biggest Jewish populations in the world. Had this been in other countries, especially European ones, she could have been arrested. She could have been attacked even.
