“OK, girls, here we are.” You pulled up outside Family Video Store and twisted around to the backseat. “Make sure you pick a good one, alright?”
“Are you not coming in with us?” Jane asked, a frown etched on her face. “What if we pick the wrong movie?”
“Don’t worry, as long as it’s not too cheesy, I think you’ll be fine.” You gave her a warm smile. “But our entire movie night is riding on this, so I’m trusting you guys.”
Max was sitting next to her in the back and she gave you a pointed look. “Relax, we got this. You know we have elite movie taste. But she’s right, you should totally come in with us.”
“You really want me coming in and cramping your style?” You asked them. “No one wants their lame older sister hanging around.”
“You’re not lame.” Jane told you, and she really meant it. Being her sister meant that you’d been with her through everything in the last couple of years, helping her understand her powers, supporting her when she was figuring herself out and being there to kick anyone’s ass if they ever gave her aa hard time. She thought the absolute world of you and you loved her to pieces. The two of you and Hopper were like the three musketeers.
And with Max being her best friend, you’d taken the red head under your wing as well, taking on the older sibling role. Max loved you just as much, which is why you were driving them to the video store on your day off, planning a movie night with them. Hanging out with them was your favourite thing to do, you loved them to pieces. However, right now they were both giving you looks that suggested they were not happy with you.
“What?” You asked them both.
Max groaned. “Just come with us, we can’t deal with the sad puppy dog eyes.” She informed you. You frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about the fact that Steve literally looks wounded whenever we go in there without you, and then we have to hear him whine about it.”
You rolled your eyes. “You’re being dramatic, he doesn’t do that.”
“Last time he asked what you were up to five times.” Jane told you. Max sputtered out with laugher. Your sister was still wrapping her head around social cues, she didn’t quite understand it yet. But Max could see it clear as day, and she absolutely revelled in it. You were completely oblivious to the fact and it baffled her how that could still be. The guy had never been Mr Smooth when it came to feelings.
“Just come in with us.” She pleaded. “We like hanging out with you anyway.”
“Fine.” You conceded, never able to resist them for very long anyway. “Come on, let’s go.”
You jumped out the car and followed them inside, lingering a little as they ran straight up to the counter. Steve was standing behind it and his face brightened when he saw them, not noticing you by the door at first. “Hey, ladies. What can I do for you?”
“Hey, Harrington.” Max leaned against the counter like she owned the place, that girl was a force of nature. “We need some recommendations for movie night.”
Steve raised his eyebrows, holding his hands to his chest. “And you’re asking me? I’m honoured.”
Max gave him a pointed look. “No, we love you but we need Robin.” Jane giggled as Steve gave her an offended look.
“You’re kinda mean, you know that?” He told her.
“I like to think I’m just honest.” She responded,, giving him her best smile. He rolled his eyes.
“Hey, Steve.” You greeted as you made it up to the counter, smiling at him. And just like that, Max and Jane blurred into his peripheral vision as he turned, attention fixed solely on you. In fact, every single other person in the store may as well not have been there because the second you walked into the room, nothing else mattered to Steve. He gave you a wide smile, moving to the other side of the counter.
“Hey, you came in today?” He said. “It’s great to see you.”
“Yeah, you too.” You nodded. “These two roped me into driving them, how could I say no?”
Steve chuckled, just as Robin emerged from the back, noticing the girls waiting by the counter. She rolled her eyes. “Don’t worry, Harrington. I’ll serve.” She shook her head as she reached them, noting how Steve barely even heard them. “Honestly, he’s going to be the death of me.”
“Don’t be too hard on him, you know how down bad he is.” Max reminded her. Robin gave her a knowing smile.
“Yeah, if only he could flirt and work at the same time. I swear he short-circuits whenever she comes in here.”
Jane was watching the scene unfold, noting how Steve’s eyes were practically heart-shaped as the two of you laughed over something the others couldn’t hear. She could tell how happy you were and it warmed her heart. Turning back to her best friend, she smiled. “She’s laughing a lot, what do you think they’re talking about?”
“Hopefully Steve’s finally asking her out.” Robin said.
“Ask her out? Like on a date?” Jane asked. “Are they in love?”
Max grinned, leaning in so you couldn’t hear them. “Harrington’s been in love with your sister for months now. And she has no idea. We don’t know how, he’s so obvious about it.”
She was right. Steve was totally smitten, he had been since that night last June. The two of you were the resident babysitters of the group, both looking out for the kids during the whole Upside-Down business. When he’d tried to protect Dustin and Max from getting taken out by the Mind Flayer at the mall, he’d narrowly avoided getting killed himself. If it hadn’t been for you jumping in, remembering all the stuff your father had taught you and shooting that fucker before it could hurt him. Steve still had the scars from that night but he was still standing thanks to you.
Before the two of you had been steady friends. But seeing you jump in without even thinking to keep him safe, it had shifted something in him. He’d never had anyone do something like that for him before. He’d fallen hard and fast, and had been ever since.
“Oh, I almost forgot.” Steve said as the two of you chatted. He turned to the pile of videos next to him and grabbed one, handing it to you. “I put that new horror movie aside for you. The one you were talking about last week.”
Your eyes lit up. “You remembered that?”
“Of course I did.” He smiled. “I know how excited you were to see it, I just grabbed it when it came in. No big deal.”
“You’re the best, Steve.” You flipped it over to check out the back. “I know what I’m watching tonight after those two conk out.” You glanced up at him. “Hey, you want to join us tonight?”
“Really?” Steve asked. “I don’t want to crash your girls night?”
“Don’t be silly, you’re always welcome.” You told him. “Unless you have other plans?”
“I don’t think so.” He shook his head. Of course even if he did it wouldn’t matter. If you were inviting him somewhere, his schedule just cleared straight out. You beamed.
“Then come, please. I could do with the company watching this.” You waved the video.
“You need my arm to hide behind when it gets too scary?” He teased you.
You rolled your eyes. “Please, we both know you’ll be the one who’s terrified.” The playful banter went on, and Robin watched on with her face scrunched up in disbelief.
“Unbelievable.”
As if you’d heard her, you turned in her direction and she immediately directed her attention back to the kids, pretending they hadn’t all been eavesdropping on your interaction. “Hey, Robin, you’re more than welcome as well. We’ll make it a group thing.”
“Wouldn’t miss it.” She called out. Max couldn’t help but laugh at the look Steve gave her, mortally offended. He was completely hopeless. You smiled.
“Great. I’ll just check this out and meet you girls outside.” You turned back to Steve, placing a hand on his arm. He practically melted. “Thank you so much for this, Steve. Look forward to seeing you later.”
“You know, we can have the movie night at my place if you like? I have the space and you guys can crash if you like?”
“Really? That would be awesome, actually!” You exclaimed. “I can meet you there.”
He waved a hand, “Don’t be silly, I’ll come pick you up. You know I love driving you.”
Your heart skipped a little but you ignored it. “You’d do that, you don’t mind?”
“You know I’d do anything for you.” He said it like it was nothing but it was anything but. You grinned.
“Thanks, Steve. You’re a good friend.”
Steve watched you leave, deflating a little as he felt your absence seep it. It wasn’t so much that you seemed to only see him as a friend, he’d long since acknowledged that even though he was head over heels for you, it was purely platonic your end. Sure, it stung a little but what could he do? He just hated that there never seemed to be any time when he had you to himself. He loved Robin and the kids, but sometimes he just wanted to talk to you without anyone else around. He sighed,
Max, who was still observing him as Jane and Robin watched you go, felt a little pang of sympathy for the guy. Steve had always looked out for her, he was basically like the older brother she’d always wished for at this point, and despite how much she didn’t want to admit it, she thought he was cool. Definitely someone she regarded as important and she didn’t like seeing him so sad.
Robin finished up with their transaction and as they walked out, she took Jane’s arm and pulled her into a huddle. “Those two are hopeless. They need our help.”
“What are we going to do?” Jane asked, eyes lighting up.
“Don’t worry, I’ll come up with a plan.” Max told her.
**
“Harrington, what are you doing at my house again?” Hopper asked as he opened the door to find Steve standing there, looking slightly terrified. He hadn’t anticipated your father answering the door and despite the fact that they’d literally fought monsters together, being faced with the Chief of Police was still enough to have him quaking in his boots.
“Evening, sir.” Steve tipped his head respectfully. “I’m just swinging by to pick the girls up, we’re having a movie night.”
Hopper of course knew this all along, he was just screwing with the poor guy. Fixing him with a steely glare, Steve looked like a bug under a microscope. The only thing that set his nerves at ease was your airy voice floating down the stairs. “Dad, please don’t scare him off. We kind of like having him around.”
You appeared in the hallway with Jane in tow, smiling at Steve who looked like he was suddenly on another planet. You were wearing jeans and a simple lacy blouse but he was still convinced you looked fucking gorgeous. Hopper caught him staring and cleared his throat loudly. Steve broke from his trance just in time to see your father folding his arms and raising an eyebrow at him. He shuffled nervously.
“We’ll see you later, Dad.” You gave him a quick hug goodbye, Jane doing the same.
“You guys need a ride home?” He asked you both.
“That’s OK, we’re just going to crash at Steve’s.” You told him.
Hopper groaned. “You’re sleeping over at his place? Fantastic.”
“Relax, Dad. The whole group is going to be there, it’s not a big deal.” As it turned out, your small movie night with the girls had turned into an entire party thing, and half the kids were already piled into Steve’s car, much to his slight annoyance. Jane ran out the house to go and meet them whilst Steve held back, waiting for you.
“I’ll get them back safe tomorrow, sir. Promise.”
Hopper didn’t seem entirely convinced but he trusted you so relented. Steve nodded to you. “You ready to go?”
“Yeah. Wait, actually I just need to grab my jacket.”
“You can borrow mine.” Steve offered, earning himself another glare from your father. “Or not.”
“I won’t be a second.” You told him. “I’ll meet you in the car.”
Steve said goodbye to Hopper and made his way back to the Beamer, not much wanting to be interrogated any further. As he got back into the drivers seat, he turned to Dustin who had commandeered the passenger side, and jerked his thumb to the back. “Come on, Henderson. Shift it.”
“What?!” Dustin asked, outraged. “That’s not fair, I called shotgun.”
“Shotgun’s reserved.” Max and Jane said in unison, simultaneously taking on the role of Steve's wingwomen. Dustin turned to glare at them.
“For who?” He demanded.
As if on cue, you appeared and opened the passenger door. Seeing that Dustin was already there, you stepped back. “Oh, sorry Henderson. I’ll take the back.”
“No!” Steve said far too quickly. “He was just moving, weren’t you man?” When Dustin looked at him, he gave the kid a warning look, jerking his head to the backseat. Dustin sighed, taking the hint.
“Fine, I’m moving.” He sighed, “Totally unfair, though.”
“Thanks, Dustin.” You smiled as you slid into the passenger seat. Steve glanced over, fully convinced that the seat had never looked so good. You caught him staring and frowned.
“What, do I have something on my face?” You checked yourself in the mirror. Steve just chuckled to himself.
“No, you’re good. Don’t worry.”
In the backseat, Max whispered to Jane. “See, what did I tell you? Absolutely hopeless.”
**
“Jesus Christ!” Steve jumped out of his skin as one of the on-screen killers jumped back up. “I thought they killed that son of a bitch!”
You poked him in the arm. “Are you scared, Harrington?”
“No, of course not.” He protested.
“You sure? I’ve got a cushion over here if you need something to hide behind?” He threw some popcorn in your direction and you snorted, which only made him laugh as well.
“Shh,” he held a hand to your mouth despite his own grin. “You’ll wake them up.”
As he took his hand away, you glanced over the room. The kids were all fast asleep on the floor of Steve’s sitting room, tired out from watching back-to-back movies. Even Robin was curled up on the couch beside you, eyes shut as she slept peacefully. You leaned into Steve, voice dropping an octave.
“They’re so much nicer when they’re like this, huh?”
“You read my mind.” He whispered back. “God, I love them but half the time I can’t keep up.”
“I think you’re a damn good babysitter.” You assured him. As you sat there, your gaze drifted across the room to where Jane was lying, head resting on Dustin’s shoulder as she slept. A smile played on your lips. Steve followed your gaze and gently nudged your leg with his.
“You’re doing great with her, you know.” He told you. “She’s awesome.”
You nodded slowly. “I just want her to have a normal life, you know? God, she deserves it after everything she’s been through it. I just hope all this fighting monsters and shit is over soon.”
Steve knew, of course he did, and he reached out to take one of your hands, rubbing soothing circles into the back. “She’s good as long as she’s got you to take care of her. Guess that’s why you’re not scared of horror movies, you literally survived one and came out swinging.”
His words made you feel ten times better. “Come on, I’m not exactly a superhero.”
“You are to me.” He confessed. “You saved my life, remember?”
“And I’d do it again in a heartbeat.” You told him. “Couldn’t imagine my life without Steve Harrington in it.”
“You never have to, I promise.”
You glanced up at him and there was nothing but pure adoration in his eyes. It made you heart flutter a little. The moment lasted for a few seconds before there was another loud noise on the TV and you both jumped suddenly. The two of you laughed it off.
Jane, who was pretending to still be asleep, had heard the entire conversation and she finally understood what Max was saying. Steve was totally in love with you, and she knew there was no one who deserved happiness more than her big sister. Max had been absolutely right, and she knew it truly now.
**
The problem with fighting monsters on the regular was the emotional scars that came along with it. And for Steve, those scars were a lot worse than he ever let on to anyone. Ever since the day he and Robin had been tortured by the Russians, he’d been plagued by bad nightmares, constantly reliving how bad it had been. He still heard Robin’s screams when he’d been thrown back into the room, only semi-conscious, still felt the pain he’d been subjected to. Most nights he woke up in a cold sweat, having to remind himself that he was safe. It didn’t help that his parents were never there, so he was alone most of the time. The silence was what scared him more than anything.
Of course it was even harder when he felt the need to shoulder all of the kids fear as well, acting as a confidante for them meant having to downplay his own trauma for their sake. The only two people he ever let his guard down around were Robin, his partner in crime who had been through everything with him, and of course you.
He had been trying to take a nap early that evening, exhausted from back-to-back shifts and in need of some rest. However, he didn’t sink into sleep the way he had hoped for, not when the monsters started to creep in again. As soon as he heard the screaming, he sat bolt upright on the couch, hair sticking to his face and breathing uneven. Fear had overtaken him and he wished more than anything that someone could be there to console him in this moment. Right now he wasn’t feeling strong, he just wanted a hug.
Slowly getting up, he made his way over to the phone and dialled the number of the only person he really wanted to speak to in that moment.
**
You were in the kitchen making some smoothies for you and the girls. Jane had recently gotten invested in making friendship bracelets and with your father out at work, the three of you were having a crafting session. As you were grabbing the glasses out of the cupboard, the phone rang. You crossed over and answered it, wondering who might calling at such a later hour.
“Hello?” You answered after a few rings.
“Hey, sweetheart.” The familiar voice came through. You instantly brightened up.
“Hey, Steve. What’s up? How was work today, Saturday’s always a killer.” You expected him to fill you in on his entire shift, telling you all about any annoying customers he’d had or some funny story that Robin had told him. Only tonight there was nothing, he was suspiciously quiet.
“It was good.” Was all he said. You frowned.
“Steve, what’s wrong?” You asked.
“Nothing, I’m fine.” He insisted.
“Don’t do that.” You told him gently but firmly. “Not with me, you never have to do that with me.”
He knew you were right and a sigh escaped him as he relented. “I’m sorry, I just…I didn’t know who else to call.”
You turned around and leaned against the counter, giving him your full attention. “Was it the nightmares again?” He didn’t respond right away, and you could hear his shaky breathing down the phone. “Oh, Steve. You’re there on your own?”
“I’m OK, honestly.” He tried to ignore his racing heart. “Talking to you is helping.”
You smiled, incredibly grateful that you were the one he’d called. But you knew Steve, and you knew that he was lying about being fine. He didn’t need to be alone right now. “Hey, why don’t you come over and hang out here for a while?”
Steve felt immediately relieved, glad that you’d asked instead of making him say it out loud. “Are you sure, I don’t want your dad to get mad.”
“Dad’s working tonight, it’s just me and the girls. We’re making friendship bracelets.”
Steve hesitated. “I don’t want to intrude.”
“Steve Harrington, get your ass over here and craft with us. We’d love to have you.”
“Ok.” You could practically hear his smile down the phone. “I’m on my way.”
“Drive safe, I’ll see you soon.” You told him as you hung up. For a moment you stood there, letting the conversation wash over you. It would be a lie to say that you didn’t like being Steve’s person, the one he came to when things got hard. It meant more to you than you’d ever admit.
“Is Steve your boyfriend?” A voice broke you out of your thoughts. Glancing over, you saw Jane standing in the doorway, giving you an inquisitive look. You laughed her comment off.
“What do you mean? Steve and I are just friends?”
Jane didn’t look convinced. “Me and Max read a lot of magazines, they talk about what a good boyfriend is.” She told you. “It says a good boyfriend is always happy to see you, remembers things you say, and puts you first when it matters.” She listed off the attributes from memory. “That’s basically you and Steve. Max and Robin say all the time that he loves you and I think they’re right.”
You stared at her, completely dumbfounded. No one had ever really put it that way before and the way she said it made sense. But Steve was your best friend, you’d never really considered him as anything else before. Now your sister had you questioning things. You often ignored how he made your stomach flip when he smiled, or made your heart flutter when he complimented you. Maybe you needed to start paying attention.
“Come on, guys.” Max appeared in the kitchen. “I’m getting bored up there by myself.”
Jane turned to her with an excited grin. “Steve’s coming over.”
Max sent a smirk your way. “He is?”
You rolled your eyes. “Don’t you start as well.”
The girls ran upstairs, giggling to each other as they left you standing there by yourself and contemplating everything.
**
Steve arrived half an hour later to find the three of you sprawled out on your bed. You grinned when you saw him, jumping up and pulling him into a tight hug. He melted into you, feeling the stress of the day wash off of him just from being around you. “I’m glad you’re here.” You whispered in his ear, quiet enough so only he could hear.
“Me too.” He replied, holding you for a fraction longer than normal. Jane and Max exchanged a glance, feeling as though they were intruding on something, When Steve finally let you go, you led him over to sit down next to you on the bed, silently asking the girls to make some space. They did so, and Jane immediately handed Steve some string. He smiled. “What do I do with this?”
She pushed the crafting set towards him. “You do whatever makes you happy.” She told him. “There’s no rules.”
You’d never get over just how big your sister’s heart was despite everything she’d been through. Steve listened to her, focusing intently on the task at hand as he began assembling his own bracelet. For a while a peaceful silence washed over the group as were all concentrating hard. You could still feel Steve’s nervous energy emanating from him, and as you stole a glance you noticed his hands were shaking a little.
Without even thinking, you reached over and took one of his hands. It was your turn to comfort him. No words exchanged, the two of you simply continued with your bracelets one-handed, which was not an easy task but neither one of you wanted to let go. Out of the corner of your eye, you could see him smiling lightly to himself. You did the same.
Max looked up from her own bracelet and noticed the two of you. Silently she nudged Jane and tilted her head in your direction. Jane followed her gaze and grinned widely.
“Hey, guys. We’re just going to get some snacks from downstairs.” She said loudly, grabbing Jane’s arm and pulling her up off the bed. You and Steve watched them go, shutting the door behind them as they left you two alone. Steve was still trying to thread some beads on his string with one hand, refusing to let yours go. You watched on as you laughed.
“What?” He asked in amusement. “This is harder than it looks you know?”
“It’s a lot easier with two hands.” You pointed out. Steve chuckled.
“Yeah, you’re probably right.” He nodded. Still he didn’t let go. You stared down at your joined hands, feeling something shift inside. You put your bracelet down and sat up.
“Steve, can I ask you something?”
“Sure.” He nodded. “Anything, you know that.”
You took a deep breath, trying to build yourself up to it. Steve frowned, moving his free hand up to tap your forehead gently. “What are you thinking so hard about, sweetheart?”
Here goes nothing, you thought to yourself. “How would you feel if I told you I was reconsidering the way I felt about you?”
He stilled for a second, taking your words in. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t know, I’m just…for a really long time I’ve only ever seen you as a friend. But what if I said that recently I’d been feeling different?”
Steve’s brain was short-circuiting again. “Different…how?”
“Steve, I think I like you as more than a friend. I think I have for a while but I was too scared to admit to it and-“
“Wait, you’re saying you have feelings for me?” He said, completely dumbfounded. “I didn’t think you felt that way?”
You shook your head with a smile. “Yeah, well I think I just got a much-needed thump on the head.” You glanced back in the direction the girls had disappeared in. “With everything we’ve been through, it’s scary admitting those feelings. But, fuck it. Steve, I really like you.”
You turned around just in time for Steve to pull you into him, pressing your lips to his. His hand snaked to the back of your neck to bring you impossibly closer to him, tongue swiping across your bottom lip. A small gasp escaped you and he took the opportunity to slip his tongue into your mouth, pulling you onto his lap as his hands settled on your waist. Your own hands found a home in his hair, tugging gently and earning a groan from him. A smirk appeared on your lips as Steve broke away, forehead resting against yours as he paused for breath.
“Shit.” He breathed gently.
“That was…” You were lost for words.
Steve hummed in agreement. “You know, I imagined this moment so many times. That was way better than anything I cooked up.”
You laughed, leaning in to steal another quick kiss. Steve gripped your hips, not wanting to let you go too soon. He gazed at you in adoration as he brushed some hair from your face. “This whole time I thought I was friendzoned. Was I wrong?”
“I was just an oblivious idiot.” You told him, carding your fingers through your hair and pulling a contented sigh out of him. “But it was something Jane said. She was describing the perfect boyfriend, and she was right. That’s me and you, Steve.”
He grinned like an idiot. “Are you asking me to be your boyfriend?”
“Maybe.”
“Fuck, I love that sound of that.” He told you.
“You’re an idiot, Harrington.”
“I’m you’re idiot now.” And finally the two of you were on the same page. Everything finally felt right. Steve had completely forgotten about his panic from earlier, too caught up in you now to care.
“Hey, you know, my dad’s not back until tomorrow.” You whispered softly. “You could stay over tonight if you wanted?”
“Yeah, I’d like that.” He nodded. “I hate waking up alone after a nightmare.”
You pressed a kiss to his forehead. “You don’t have to do that anymore, you’ve got me now.”
The two of you suddenly heard hushed cheering from the other side of the door, and Max’s voice. “About damn time.” She said, far too loudly.
“We can hear you guys.” You called out to them. “You’re not subtle.”
“Oops.” You heard her say, making you both laugh. “But you owe us big time.”
They were right. Because now you had Steve, and he had you. And everything was finally perfect.
summary: while he was in jail, teacake made a bucket list of things he wanted to do when he got out. you were expecting some insane but harmless things on there. what you weren't expecting was one of the items to be 'crash a wedding'. and you certainly weren't expecting to be dragged into it and having to face your less than ideal feelings for your best friend.
warnings: none. fluff fluff flufffff. this is literally cliché town, a bit of fake dating (it's me), friends to lovers and i hope i did teacake's rambling justice because writing is no joke.
note: i don't even know guys... you can thank @keer-y and @graywrenhart. endless thanks to them and @harringtonsdiary for being there every step of the way and encouraging me every day to actually write this. this started as a fun idea and i literally did this just for fun. i can't stress enough how this has elevated my admiration for writers even more. you guys are rockstars.

You were going to kill him. And then you were going to kill yourself, but first you were going to kill him.
It’s your own fault, really.
Last week you were in Teacake’s apartment, having some takeout and watching a movie because by some miracle you both had a Friday off and no social life. The TV was playing some action movie neither of you had been paying attention to because Teacake kept making comments about every single thing that happened on the screen and then going on a tangent about how this or that character reminded him of someone that had walked into the facility that day.
Your feet were resting on his lap, your legs stretched out across the couch between you, while both of you ate straight from the containers. Well, while you ate, Teacake had already inhaled his food and was now absentmindedly rubbing circles on your ankle when he wasn't busy stealing food from your container.
You looked down just in time to catch him reaching over with his fork.
“Did you not have enough of your own food?”
He froze, fork halfway there.
“Yours tastes better” he shrugged, unbothered.
You just rolled your eyes and moved your food closer to him.
The credits rolled eventually and you both stayed exactly where you were, your feet still on Teacake’s lap, and the apartment settled into that comfortable (although unusual) kind of quiet.
Teacake was scrolling through his phone, when you could tell something suddenly caught his attention. He was staring at his screen with his eyebrows pulled together like he was trying to figure something out.
You glanced over, frowning.
“What?”
He looked up at you, with a suspicious glint in his eye.
“Remember that list I told you about?” he smirked.
Oh no. Because you did remember. The one he’d made while he was still in jail. Teacake’s Freedom List. Things he wanted to do when he got out. Things he missed. Things he wanted to try out. A messy collection of ideas, small goals, and things that mattered more than he’d ever admit.
Some things were stupid. ‘Convince somebody I've got a twin for at least five minutes.’
“Come on, it’s fun! It’s like bein’ an undercover cop or some shit”, he bumped your shoulder with his.
You couldn’t help but laugh, “You’re such a weirdo.”
Another one was ‘Win one of those claw machines.’
“Dunno why that got so stuck in my head,” he shrugged “I just always thought ‘how hard can it be?’ Well, turns out, real hard. There was this little penguin wearing a scarf. Which, honestly, was kinda unnecessary because it's a penguin. Like, that's literally their whole thing, right? Not even a good one, which is the funny thing. Kinda weird lookin'. Like now that I think about it, probably not even the best toy in the machine. But he was cute, with his little scarf and everythin’. I dunno, it just looked like somethin' you'd like. And it made me think of you cause you’re always cold and then you do that thing where you put your hands on me to warm up like I’m some kinda personal heater. So I thought, alright, I'll get it for you. I try once. Didn't get it. Whatever, no big deal. I try again. Still didn't get it. Ended up spendin' like fifteen minutes on that damn thing. Kept gettin' it halfway up and then it'd drop, and I swear it was that damn scarf.”
He pointed at you.
“So truly…it’s your fault.”
You scoffed.
“… and after about the tenth try it was just a matter of pride, you feel me? Didn't even realize there were people behind me 'til I finally looked up and there were all these kids just starin' at me. I was like, okay, yeah... maybe I should give up. I was so close. I could feel it. That’s how they get you, I’m telling ya. So now I have to go back, because technically I didn’t finish that one… hey, are you listening?”
You smiled at him as something warm settled somewhere in your chest, and you decided to ignore it.
On paper, the list sounded ridiculous. Almost all of it.
But you knew better than to brush it off. Because it wasn’t really about the things themselves. It was about the little pieces of a life he’d been waiting to get back to.
Things most people never thought twice about. The things he’d missed. Things you never thought about until someone took them away. Things he’d imagined doing when he finally had the chance. New experiences he couldn’t wait to try. Even if those experiences were trying to get a penguin with a scarf from a claw machine. And maybe you liked being part of those experiences more than you should have.
It wasn’t all chaotic though, some were so ordinary and yet so meaningful they felt like a punch in the gut when you heard about them. ‘Take a walk with nowhere to be.’ Not some huge adventure. Just a walk.
But you knew what that meant for him. Because you noticed. You knew because sometimes he’d stand outside his apartment for a few extra seconds before going in. You knew because every now and then he’d look at you with this quiet little smile, like he still couldn’t believe this was his life now.
Like he was still getting used to having time that belonged to him.
Maybe that was the problem. You noticed a bit too much. And maybe you were also starting to notice that you might want your time to be a bit his too.
Somewhere along the way, your feelings for Teacake had shifted. And you didn’t know how to feel about that. At first, you just thought it was you missing him after so much time without him. That you had missed his stupid jokes, his voice, the way he always seemed to know when something was wrong or when he looked at you with that familiar smile that made everything feel better. Of course you’d want to spend more time with him. Of course you’d feel your chest tighten every time he laughed. You had missed your best friend.
But when those feelings didn’t go away, you started to realize that maybe it wasn’t just because you had missed him.
So naturally, you tried to ignore it and push those thoughts away. But sometimes you caught yourself looking at him a little too long. And you’d have to look away. Because you weren’t ready to admit what that meant.
“I remember,” you replied, softer than you meant to.
He smiled, apparently that was all the encouragement he needed.
He turned over the phone wordlessly. It was some article about a ridiculously expensive wedding. One of those where people wear suits that cost more than your car, the venue looks like something out of a movie and a person with allergies’ nightmares, and the food had names no one could pronounce.
You stared at the screen. Then back at him. Then at the screen again.
“It’s a wedding,” you deadpanned.
He frowned.
“I know it’s a wedding, dummy.”
“Well, what do you want me to say, Tea? It looks like another rich people wedding to me.”
He just kept looking between you and his screen shifting slightly on the couch as he tried and failed to hide the smile pulling at his lips.
“Why are you showing me this?” you narrowed your eyes.
His smile widened at your question.
“I still got stuff on there.”
Which is how you now found yourself in the middle of a conversation with Aunt... Lisa? Linda? about how absolutely exhausting finding a nanny for your toddler is these days but “you just have to put in the effort if you want to go to The Hamptons, you know?”
“Right,” you nodded like you had any idea what you were talking about. "Can't have the wrong nanny in... the Hamptons.”
You had walked in waiting for someone to stop you at any second, notice you weren't on the guest list, call security to escort the two of you out, and with the night ending with Teacake behind bars again.
Turns out, there was nothing to worry about. People just assumed you belonged there. That was apparently the secret. Show up, look more or less sharp and just walk around like you had the right to be there. And sure, maybe it was because everyone was too busy looking at themselves to look at you too closely but hey, you weren’t going to complain about that. You were, however, going to complain about being abandoned fifteen minutes in to a group of people talking about things like summer houses, annoying husbands, and which places were “too crowded” this time of year.
She laughed like you had said something hilarious. God, even her laughter sounded expensive.
“Oh, honey, not in the Hamptons,” she corrected, touching your arm like she was talking to a child “For the Hamptons. I love him, of course, but bringing a toddler to The Hamptons is not very relaxing, now, is it?”
Right. Because who would want to make memories with their child when they could be relaxing. Your bad.
“Right. Wouldn’t want him getting in the way of your… relaxing.”
“Exactly! You get it,” she smiled, satisfied with your answer.
The venue looked like something out of a period drama, all stone and huge windows overlooking beautiful gardens. The lawn had been turned into a reception space under the open sky, warm lights wrapped around and between the trees, flowers covered every table and there even was a huge ice swan because of course there was.
Waiters moved through the lawn with trays full of champagne and tiny pieces of food that Teacake got his hands on immediately. Somewhere near, music played softly in the background, mixing with the sound of conversations, laughter, and glasses clinking.
You looked across the crowd of perfect hair and expensive suits until you finally found him on the other side of the lawn, doing exactly what you expected. Talking. He was laughing with an old lady like he'd known her for years. He caught your eye for a second, and the corner of his mouth lifted, letting you know he was enjoying this way more than he should, before turning back to whatever conversation he had somehow charmed his way into.
He was loving this, you could tell. Everything about this place was ridiculous, and Teacake was loving all of it.
“Like, look at this. Look at the flowers. Who needs that many flowers? What happens after? They just throw 'em away? Somebody’s gotta clean all that up. And look at that cake,” he pointed at the admittedly ridiculous cake “The thing’s taller than me!”
“Look,” he pointed behind you.
You followed his gaze.
A waiter walked past carrying a tray of tiny appetizers. He immediately grabbed one of each. You stared at him.
“Are you serious?”
“What?” He shrugged, completely unapologetic, “They’re free”
“Everything is free, we shouldn’t be here” you reminded him.
“Oh, come on,” he poked your side. “you tellin’ me you weren’t even a bit curious to see what these rich folks’ weddings look like?”
You rolled your eyes at him, fighting the smile that was starting to appear when he shoved one of the appetizers into his mouth.
Before you could figure out a way to leave the conversation to grab another glass of champagne before you could rip your hair out, a voice interrupted you.
“There you are!”
A woman you didn’t recognize was making her way towards you. She had perfect curls, a dress you were sure cost more than your entire wardrobe and she was smiling at you like you were old friends.
“I was wondering when I’d get a chance to congratulate you, darling.”
“Excuse me?”
Her smile widened.
“On your engagement, of course.”
You stared at her, certain you had misheard her, or that she had you confused with someone else.
“My… engagement,” you repeated, because it was the only thing your brain managed to come up with.
“Yes!” she said excitedly “Your fiancé told my husband the happy news”
“… My what?” you asked dumbly. Your brain had stopped working. It was already halfway there when Aunt Lisa (Linda?) started talking about the importance of knowing your ‘seasonal color’ but this was the little push it needed to completely turn into mush.
“Oh, it must have been very recent,” she said with a small laugh “you don’t seem very used to the word yet.”
Yes. So recent it appeared you had become engaged at some point in the last thirty minutes.
“You two are just adorable,” she continued, unaware you were barely paying attention “I knew it the moment I saw you together.”
Teacake. Of course.
“Really,” you deadpanned.
“Yes,” she replied, completely serious. “It’s the way you two look at each other. Very sweet.”
You opened your mouth. Then closed it. Nope. You were not going to dwell on that.
“Excuse me,” you forced a smile “I need to find my… fiancé”
You looked across the lawn. He looked good. Annoyingly good. The kind of good that made you forget you were supposed to be annoyed. His bleached hair was slightly messy, a few pieces falling forward from the breeze, his top button undone, and his arms were moving with the story he was telling. And he was far too unbothered.
Fine. If he wanted to play pretend, you could play pretend. Except you were going to have more fun with it than he was.
You narrowed your eyes. And started toward him.
“There she is! The lovely fiancé.”
The woman next to Teacake was exactly what you would expect to find at one of these weddings. She was older, probably in her seventies. Grey hair in place, a pearl necklace and a… Transatlantic accent? that seemed too practiced to be real.
“Here I am” you forced a smile.
“It’s so wonderful to finally meet you, darling,” the old lady, who introduced herself as Ethel, added “you must be so happy.”
“So very happy,” you said, way too sweetly. Then you slipped your arm through Teacake’s and leaned in “Aren’t we, teacup?”
Teacake froze. He looked down at you like you had lost your mind. And when he saw your expression, he immediately realized what you were doing. You smiled wider at the panic in his eyes. Good.
“I was so sorry to hear about the ring,” Ethel said, with a sympathetic shake of her head, “How awful.”
“Right,” you falltered “The… ring.”
The non-existent ring.
“I simply cannot believe someone would steal such a valuable thing,” she continued, devastated for you “A family heirloom. And your twin brother at that!” she placed her gloved hand on her chest.
You looked at Teacake, trying to process what you were hearing. Oh, he had gone all out, hadn’t he? And he had clearly sold it, because Margaret looked heartbroken.
“Oh, my poor sweetcheeks,” you said softly, giving his arm a gentle squeeze “he was so devastated. He even tried to confront him. He is so brave, aren’t you, honeybear?”
Teacake’s eyes dropped to where you were touching him and he visibly swallowed.
“Oh, you poor thing,” she said warmly. “That must have been terribly difficult. Especially knowing he left the country with the ring…”
Jesus Christ.
“It was, but my pumpkin is so considerate,” you sighed dramatically, leaning your head on his shoulder.
“What’s with the names?” he hissed quietly, looking down at you.
“What?” you looked up at him and smiled innocently “it’s just what I call my fiancé.”
“Well, I’m sure you’ll laugh about it one day,” Ethel said with a reassuring smile.
“Oh, I’m sure we will. My darling cinnamon roll always sees the bright side,” you smiled brightly.
Ethel blinked. Apparently, that was too much even for her.
“Oh yeah, I call him that sometimes. Because he’s as sweet, soft and delicious as a cinnamon roll,” you patted his cheek.
Teacake’s ears turned a funny shade of red, and you had to stop yourself from laughing.
“You two are adorable, I must say,” Ethel said, looking between the two of you, unaware of the chaos unfolding in front of her.
“He’s very affectionate,” you sighed “but he’s also very shy, my snugglebug.”
His blush somehow got worse, if that was even possible.
“You’re cute when you’re flustered,” you whispered in his ear, barely containing your laughter.
It seems that was enough for Teacake. He straightened his posture, narrowed his eyes…
And decided to tease you right back.
“You two really seem comfortable with each other,” Ethel continued “you don’t see that with couples these days, it’s quite endearing.”
Suddenly, he grabbed you by the waist, pulled you closer, and pressed you gently back against his chest.
“Oh, yeah,” he said by your ear “we can’t get enough of each other. Especially her.”
You turned your head so fast you almost knocked your forehead into his chin.
You had lost control of the situation too quickly for your liking. Because he was too close. You couldn’t focus on anything but his breath on your ear, his warm chest pressed against your back, and his hand on your waist. You needed to get it together. This was your best friend. The man who had ‘Eat an entire cheesecake’ in his Freedom List. (And who had lost a fight with a claw machine just to get you a stupid penguin, but that was besides the point).
Get it together.
“Is that what you think?” you asked, trying to ignore how breathless you sounded.
“I don’t think it, I know it,” he smirked, looking smug.
You snorted.
"What's funny?" he frowned at you.
You leaned in a bit.
“That you actually believe that.”
Teacake's eyebrows lifted and his eyes dropped for a second.
"Believe what?" Now he was the one who sounded out of breath.
“That I’m the one who can’t get enough,” you tilted your head.
His mouth opened slightly. Then closed.
“Because from where I'm standing...” you leaned in even closer. His hand at your waist shifted, his fingers moving against your side. His eyes flickered down again. “...I think you're the one who's always finding reasons to stay close.”
Ethel laughed, thinking she was just watching just two people bickering. And you two were used to this. Bickering. Bantering. That was normal. Except normally his hand wasn't resting on your waist. Or your back was against his chest. Or your noses were nearly brushing.
“Yeah, maybe you’re right.”
And he grinned.
After another hour of pretending to be a perfect couple and suffering through a few more enthusiastic congratulations from people you had never seen before, and hoped to never see again (God, how many people had he talked to?), you and Teacake finally managed to escape to a corner of the ridiculously lavish estate’s ballroom the newlyweds had rushed everyone into to witness their first dance.
Huge chandeliers, polished marble floors, and flowers decorated everywhere you looked. The orchestra was playing a romantic melody while guests gathered around the dance floor.
“You know, I thought we wouldn’t last this long,” you admitted, “and, I hate to say it, but I’m kind of having fun.”
“I t—”
“I swear to God, if you say ‘I told you so’, I’m telling everyone, walking out and leaving you to deal with the consequences,” you warned.
His hands raised in mock defense, and you both fell silent for a moment after that. When he spoke again, his voice was quieter and his gaze softened.
“I’m glad you’re doing this with me”
“The stupid list?” you frowned.
“All of it. Thank you. For staying. I know it sounds obvious, but... you didn't have to and to be honest, there were moments when it would have been easier not to. I wouldn’t have blamed ya” he was looking at you with an intensity you started to think your heart was going to beat out of your chest.
You frowned. Where was this coming from?
“So, yeah, thank you, I guess,” his eyes widened a bit “Not guess! I mean. I mean it”
His hand moved a bit more securely against your waist, and he started to gently brush circles with his thumb against your side.
The thing is, you didn’t know what you were expecting going in. But what you weren’t expecting was how right this would feel like. His hand hadn’t moved from your waist in the last hour, and you found yourself missing it when he removed it to grab a drink. Every time he grabbed your hand when he introduced you as his fiancé and smiled at you, something in your chest fluttered so violently you had to look away. This wasn’t real. This was your best friend. Yet none of it felt weird. And you found yourself craving more.
You were about to say something, anything, when you heard a tiny voice behind you.
“I like your dress.”
You both looked down. A little girl stood in front of you staring at you with wide eyes. She was wearing a pink, sparkly dress and had one of those mini purses rich people seemed so fond of and probably didn’t fit anything, but in her it looked adorable.
“Oh, thank you” you smiled at her “I like yours better. I love glitter.”
The little girl gave you the biggest smile you had ever seen. She looked at you like you had just given her the greatest compliment in the world, and you thought this might be the most adorable child you had ever encountered.
“Your hair is pretty too” she suddenly glanced at Teacake and said, “Yours is funny.”
You snorted at Teacake’s expression. You had never seen a grown man look more offended in his life.
“You look like Ken,” she added.
He blinked. That did it. You started laughing.
“And why are you laughing?” he accused, his eyes narrowing.
“Because you just look so offended and… she does have a point.”
“Okay. First of all. I do not look like Ken. And hey, I have nothin’ against Ken, alright? Ken's cool. Ken is fine. But I am not like him. Ken’s like… preppy. And he has that whole beach thing goin’ on. Me? I’m cool. And this” he pointed to his hair “is not toy hair. This is cool bleached hair, okay?”
“You’re cool,” you repeated.
“Yeah! Like, take skatin’, that was on my list. You won’t see Ken skatin’,” he scoffed, like he had made a point.
“Oh, you mean when you broke your wrist?” you raised your eyebrow.
“Okay that’s besides the point,” he waved a hand “and I still did it”
So had Ken, but you wouldn’t tell him that.
“Don’t worry Tea, anywhere else you’d be a ten,” you patted his cheek.
“Hey—”
“You two argue a lot,” the little girl observed.
You both turned to her at the same time. You didn’t know what to say to that, so you just stared at her.
“That means you like each other,” She stated, nodding to herself. If she hadn’t completely thrown you, you would have found the confidence with which she said it hilarious.
“What?” you sputtered.
You felt Teacake freeze beside you. Before any of you could say anything, she kept going.
“My mommy and daddy argue all the time too. And they’re married. But they make each other laugh after.”
She suddenly turned her head towards Teacake and looked at him with a seriousness that didn’t match her age. You didn’t know at what point this had turned into an interrogation.
“Do you make her laugh?”
You looked at Teacake. The playful look he always wore faded into something softer. His eyes moved over your face for a moment, and then he smiled.
“I try” he said quietly.
“Do you make him happy?” the little girl turned her attention to you.
You froze. Because you realized that this wasn’t part of the act anymore. These were real questions. Not questions about fake twin brothers or how long you had been together. This was about your real relationship.
Teacake answered before you had the chance to. He still had his hand around your waist. His thumb moved once, twice, against your side.
“She does.”
And he said it so naturally. Like it was a universal truth. A fact. Like someone had asked him his name. The answer came to him immediately, like didn’t have to think about it. And something in your chest loosened.
You looked back at him and put your hand over the one he had on your waist. A small gesture, but you noticed the change in his expression, his eyes dropping to both of your hands and a shy smile spread over his face.
The little girl nodded to herself, like she had just confirmed something very important.
“Good,” she said. And with that, apparently satisfied, she left, her little purse swinging at her side.
The newlyweds moved to the dance floor after that and for a minute you and Teacake watched them in silence, still in the same position you were in when the little girl left. You felt Teacake shift, and when you turned to look at him, he was already looking at you.
“You know, if there was a chance we wouldn’t get caught…” he said quietly, “I’d ask you to dance.”
You felt yourself smiling before you could stop it.
“If you asked,” you whispered. “I'd say yes.”
He turned you so you faced him, his hand still on your waist, and reached for your other hand. He held it and his thumb brushed gently across your ring finger. Your breath caught. And you swore a hundred butterflies decided to take flight in your stomach.
“Good,” he breathed with the gentlest smile you had ever seen on him.
His eyes flickered down, just briefly. And suddenly, you were aware of everything. How close you were, his thumb still brushing the place where your supposed engagement ring should be, his hand on your waist…
Before any of you could say anything else, a loud cheer erupted through the room when a very drunk groomsman encouraged everyone to go down to the gardens to watch the fireworks show.
You raised your eyebrows at Teacake and mouthed “fireworks?”. He just smirked, tugged at your hand and quickly made for the door with the rest of the guests.
“Tea, we can’t watch go watch them,” you whispered, trying not to laugh “the bride and groom will be there.”
“I know,” he didn’t even slow down. “You think I’m stupid?”
You stopped in your tracks, which made him stop suddenly with you, and looked at him dead in the eye.
“You’re not stupid,” you said firmly.
He had said it jokingly, but you knew he was still beating himself up over getting tricked into helping someone do something that put him in jail. And you couldn’t bear the thought of him blaming himself for just wanting to help someone and feeling bad about that. He just trusted the wrong person, that was all.
His eyes roamed over your face, searching for something, and something in his face softened.
“Okay,” he smiled. He interlocked his fingers with yours and squeezed your hand. “Let’s go.”
Teacake led you to a balcony hidden away from the rest of the wedding, overlooking the gardens but not directly above. You could still hear the music from the ballroom through the open doors behind you, but it was softer from this distance. Somewhere in the gardens below, you could hear people cheering and laughing.
For the first time all evening, everything slowed down. The air smelled faintly of gunpowder from the fireworks, the flowers from the garden, and the cologne Teacake was wearing.
You both watched the gardens and the firework show in silence. Out of the corner of your eye, you could feel Teacake shift beside you. His fingers tapped against the stone railing, stopped, then began again. You could see from time to time he would look at you, then back at the gardens and the sky.
You knew Teacake better than you knew yourself. He always had something to say. Sometimes, even too much, which was one of the things you found endearing about him. If something was bothering him, he usually talked more, not less.
“Hey,” you called softly, “you okay?”
“Huh?” his head turned quickly, “Yeah. Yeah, no. I’m good. So good. Everything’s great.”
You raised your eyebrows.
“Okay. Maybe not.”
You watched him carefully in the silence the end of the show had left, but he was looking everywhere except you. At the stone floor, at the sky, at the gardens. Anywhere but you. And every moment your eyes caught his he would avert his gaze so fast you would think you were going to turn him into stone. It would be funny if he wasn’t starting to worry you.
“Tea?” you said gently.
His eyes finally found yours and stayed there. He closed them for a brief second and took a deep breath. You thought you heard him whisper ‘okay, okay’ to himself but you weren’t too sure.
“Look, I know I’m probably going to mess all this up, but…” he sighed, signaling the space between you “I can’t it hold it anymore. Not after today. Which didn’t go how I was expectin’ it to go, lemme tell you that.”
He laughed nervously, shaking his head.
“I thought ‘hey it’s just another stupid item on the list’, right? No big deal. But then you walked out in that dress, and it reminded me of this poem, right, one I had to memorize in Ellsworth for Explorations in Poetry, and that was like the shortest one in there, but it was cool. ‘She walks in beauty’, or some shit like that. And I didn’t know what that guy was on about. I mean, I knew what he was sayin’, but I didn’t know know. What he meant, you know what I mean?” his voice softened “‘Til I saw you in that dress this mornin’. And I thought ‘Well shit, maybe I’m screwed’. And maybe that guy had a point. What I mean to say is…”
He took a deep breath.
“I like you” he admitted “Like… a lot. I think I might love you, to be honest with you”
He swallowed hard and he looked away.
“And I know you deserve way better than a guy who was in jail because he was too stupid to realize he was getting played. I know that, okay?” he looked back at you “But… I am tryin’ to be better.”
For a moment, you forgot how to breathe. Your heart was pounding so hard you thought it was going to beat out of your chest. Because you didn’t know what you were expecting, but it wasn’t this.
“Teacake…” you breathed.
You wanted to say a lot of things. That you didn't care about some mistake he made years ago. That you saw how hard he was trying to start a new life. That you felt the same. The words didn’t come. You just stared at him, trying to process the fact that Teacake, your best friend, who you had spent so long trying not to think about in that way, was standing in front of you saying the exact thing you had been too afraid to admit to yourself you wanted to hear.
He took your silence the wrong way.
“Look... you don't gotta say anythin'. I get it. We can just pretend I never said any of this, and I won’t make it weird. I just thought you should kn—”
“Travis.”
He stopped abruptly.
“Okay” he nodded to himself. “First name. Not a great sign. Was it the poem thing? I knew the poem was too much. Shit, I should’ve skipped the poem. Yeah, the poem was—”
You could see he was already starting to spiral. So, you did the first thing you could think of to shut him up.
You kissed him.
For a second, he went completely still. His hands stayed at his sides, like he was afraid to touch you.
Just when you were about to pull away, he sighed into your mouth, held the back of your neck softly and kissed you back so sweetly you thought your heart might burst. His lips moved against yours with a tenderness that caught you off guard. His thumb brushed slowly across your cheekbone, the touch so gentle it made your breath catch, and you felt him smile against your lips.
When you tangled one hand in his hair and grabbed the front of his suit with the other to pull him closer, he pressed you gently against the stone wall next to you. And the kiss wasn’t hesitant anymore. He kissed you with an intensity that made your heart race, like he had been waiting years to do it. Your fingers tightened on his hair and a quiet groan escaped him against your lips. The sound sent a rush through you, and he pulled you even closer. Your lips parted slightly and he immediately took the opportunity to deepen the kiss. All you could focus on was Teacake, the heat of his mouth and the feeling of his hands on your waist.
After what felt like hours but was maybe minutes, you both pulled apart breathing heavily into each other’s mouths. He pressed his forehead to yours and opened his eyes. His hair was messy from your hands, his lips swollen and he looked like he had lost his bearings. You smiled at the sight.
“Hi” you breathed.
“Wow. Hi,” he looked dazed.
You laughed and tried to enjoy the unusual sight of a speechless Teacake for a bit longer, but you were feeling too happy.
“For the record… I think I might love you too,” you confessed softly.
He blinked.
“I know,” he blurted out.
You raised an eyebrow, smiling.
“I know I love you!” he clarified quickly “Not that I knew you love me. Obviously. I would never assume something like that. Honestly, I’m still surprised you kissed me” he paused, looking uncertain for a moment. His eyes dropped for a second, then they returned to yours a bit more hesitant “Are you sure? Because I know I’m like… a lot. And I’m a fuck-up and a mess and definitely not boyfriend material. Hell, I’m not even sure I'm friend mat—”
You put your hand on his cheek and gently placed your thumb on his lips to stop his rambling. He turned his head and kissed your palm. His eyes held a vulnerability you had never seen before. Like he still wasn't sure he was worth choosing. How could he think he wasn’t enough?
“You keep talking like I don’t know who you are,” your voice softend as your thumb brushed his cheek. “I knew you before, Travis. Before everything that happened.”
“You’re ridiculous. You’re a pain in the ass sometimes.” A small smile tugged at your lips. “You tap your fingers when you’re thinking. You steal my food and then act offended if I call you out. You notice when someone’s having a bad day. You remember the smallest things people tell you because you actually listen.”
His expression softened and he gave your waist a little squeeze.
“And I know you trusted someone you shouldn’t have. I know they made you think they needed your help, and you didn’t think twice about it because you thought you were helping. Because that’s just who you are. You care. You care so much that sometimes you forget to think about yourself,” you smiled softly at him “And I love that you still choose kindness after everything that’s happened to you. I love how you show up, how you make me feel safe, how you make me laugh and make everything feel a little less hard.”
You gently grabbed his face with both of your hands so you could really make him understand. You needed him to understand.
“I know you,” you whispered “And… I know I love you too.”
Teacake stared at you for a second, and he let out a soft laugh. Then he leaned in and kissed you. When he pulled back, he stayed close, his forehead resting against yours.
For a moment, you just stayed there smiling at each other.
You took in your surroundings. And you started laughing. Because of course this was how it happened. Your first kiss and the moment you admitted you love your best friend happened at a wedding you weren’t even invited to. It felt ridiculous and yet so appropriate.
And maybe that was why, five minutes later, when everything went wrong, when someone finally realized there were two people at this wedding who shouldn’t be here, when security started making their way to you, when Teacake looked at you with that familiar glint in his eye…
You already knew you were going to run.
“Hey, sugarplum? Is this a bad time to tell you another item on the list is ‘Run a marathon’?”

You still remember the night it happened, the nightmares still found you every evening when you tried to go to sleep. Actually you couldn’t remember the last time you’d had a full night’s sleep, most of the time you just lay in bed, staring at the ceiling and questioning what you could have done differently to prevent any of this from happening.
When Steve had confessed to you about the whole alternate dimensions and monsters shit, you’d only gotten involved because you couldn’t stand the thought of anything happening to him. Being together when you were facing down the monsters seemed like the better option, you’d always been stronger as a team. It was crazy but you’d always been able to handle yourself, and even though he’d never admit it and hated the idea of you being in danger, Steve always felt a little less scared when you were holding his hand. It worked. But you’d never wanted to drag anyone else into it with you.
So when your best friend somehow found herself in trouble, fear had gripped you like a vice. The two of you had been inseparable since kindergarten and she was one of your favourite people. The only way you’d ever been able to describe her was a ray of sunshine, and she was never meant to find herself being stared down by a demogorgon. But you’d missed a meet-up with her one day when you were helping with a crawl, and she’d come out looking for you. When she’d called you, panic in her voice, you and Steve had broken all known speed limits to reach her, you wishing to anyone who would listen that she would be OK.
But the two of you were too late.
And now there was a hole inside of you that no amount of kind words could fix. Guilt had wrapped itself around you, making you believe that if it weren’t for you she would still be here. So it was that you shut yourself away from everyone, putting the walls up and pushing them all away. It wasn’t that you didn’t want them around, it was the fact your brain told you that you just didn’t deserve it. The monsters had taken away one of the kindest people you knew and it felt like it was all your fault.
The party had tried hard to be there for you, tried to give you the support you so desperately needed. But with how hard you pushed them, eventually one by one they fell by the wayside. The kids went first, and honestly you were somewhat grateful. Your low moods made you snappy and the last thing you wanted was to lash out at one of them. The harsh words were never sincere, sometimes you just needed space. So you’d asked Steve to make some excuse whenever one of them wanted to come over, and soon they stopped asking.
Nancy and Jonathan had tougher skin but after a month or so of trying to be there for you, they inevitably got busy with their own stuff and the calls stopped coming through. You’d felt guilty about taking up their time anyway, it was better this way.
Robin had been such a trooper. She spent two months bringing you care packages, bringing over movies for you to watch and constantly telling you witty stories to try and keep your mind distracted. But even she couldn’t keep the bad thoughts away and one day when she called, you just didn’t pick up the phone. It was better that way, eventually you’d end up hurting her.
The only person who refused to go anywhere was Steve. He’d been there with you that night when you’d cried yourself to sleep, holding you tightly and whispering softly in your ear. His heart had broken into a million pieces seeing you like that because this wasn’t something he could fix. But he could help pick up the pieces. In the beginning you’d been grateful to have him around, needing the loving words and gentle touches when you were in the midst of grief. But then that hard shell started to form around your heart, rejecting any of the supportive actions that came your way. Now you were just tired of putting on smiles and accepting gestures that you simply didn’t feel worthy of.
And you hated it because Steve was the perfectly doting boyfriend, only wanting to make you feel better. But you couldn’t take it anymore, which is why you picked the fight with him.
It was one of those days where you just wanted to lay in bed and wallow, not having the energy to talk to anyone. So when there was a knock on the door, you’d groaned inwardly. Dragging yourself out of bed, you wandered over to answer it, only to find Steve standing on the doorstep, holding a bag of groceries and giving you that smile that made your knees weak.
Even now, he still had that effect on you, still made you feel like you were the most gorgoues girl ever even when you were dressed in your pyjamas, hair not brushed and dark circles under your eyes. It never fazed him, he loved every piece of you. Even the broken pieces that should have been hard to love. It was never too much for him.
“Hi, honey.” He grinned at you.
“Steve?” You said in surprise. “What are you doing here?”
He held the grocery bag in the air. “I was worried about the last time you ate something good, so I thought I’d come over and cook you some food.”
It was such a sweet gesture and just so…Steve. He was the most caring boyfriend and you wanted to be happy. But you were so tired, and these days when you were tired, you got irritable. You didn’t want that to happen with Steve.
“That’s really nice thoughtful, Steve.” You told him, mustering a smile. “I’m kind of tired, though.”
“That’s OK.” He made his way into the house, going straight to the kitchen. “I’ll take care of everything.” As soon as he put the bag down, he came over and pressed a kiss to your forehead. You revelled in it for a minute but then you became self-conscious.
“I don’t know, baby. I haven’t slept properly or showered today, I kind of just want a quiet day.”
Steve gave you a warm smile. “Honey, we don’t have to do anything, we can just relax on the couch and eat dinner together. Why don’t you go take a shower, you’ll feel better?”
“I don’t want to take a shower.” You said a little too sharply. “I just want some space, OK?”
His face fell slightly. “OK, you don’t need to shower, it doesn’t make a difference to me either way. I just don’t want you to be on your own right now, I’m here to help.”
“I don’t want your help!” You shouted. “I just want to be myself, is that too much to ask?”
You’d never snapped at him like that before, and none of the words were true. The thought of you curling up on the couch with him was all you wanted. But he was being too nice, too sweet. It was too much, and he’d never understand the way your mind told you that you weren’t worthy of any of it.
“Steve, I don’t want to fight with you. Can you please just leave me alone?”
The smile dropped from his face, it was as if you’d just slapped him in the face. It made you feel even worse. “Baby, I’m not going to leave you. You don’t mean that, I know you don’t.”
“I do.” The walls he’d spent months trying to break down had gone back up just like that. “Just go away, I don’t want you here.”
Of course you wanted him. If only you could tell him that.
Steve was no longer looking at you in the soft, adoring way he always did. In fact he was staring at you like you were a stranger. “You really want me to go?”
“Yeah, I do.” You lied. “Please, can I just have some peace. I’ll call you later.”
“Don’t worry about that.” He said as he grabbed the bag. “I’ll give you your space.” He made for the front door, You hurried after him, all too aware of the damage you’d just inflicted.
“Steve, wait. I didn’t mean it like that.” You said. “I just-“
“Need some peace.” He cut you off. “Yeah, you said that. You know, me coming over here wasn’t supposed to stress you out, I’m only trying to help in the same way I have been for months.”
“I know that.” You defended. “I just don’t have the energy tonight. It doesn’t change how I feel about you.”
Steve paused by the doorway, turning to face you. “Seems like it does. I know you’re hurting and I wish I could take that away from you, believe me I do. But I don’t know when I became your own personal punching bag. I’m trying to be patient and give you time, but I don’t know how much longer I can do this. It’s killing me hearing the girl I love more than anything tell me to leave them alone.”
You blinked. “What are you saying?”
He sighed. “I think maybe some space is what we both need. I’m going home.”
Just like that, he walked out the door and closed it gently behind him. The silence was even worse, he should have slammed it behind him. Anger meant there was still something left to care about. But this was like he was already done, already had enough of you. You’d pushed away the last person who was still fighting for you.
The tears came fast, you slid down the wall in the hallway and buried your face in your arms. Sobs racked your body until you were exhausted and achy, all cried out. Somehow you managed to pick yourself up and find your way back into bed, but sleep didn’t come at all. The only way you could ever fall asleep these days was if Steve was here to hold you, keeping you safe. Now you felt his absence more than ever and it made you feel worse.
You stayed there for a few hours until your stomach started to growl, hunger winning out over sadness. Steve would have cooked you the best meal, you knew it. But you were on your own so you had to fend for yourself. Wandering into the kitchen, you began rifling through the cupboards trying to find something to snack on. There wasn’t much to go on but then your eyes landed on a pack of cookies right at the top of the cupboard, just out of your reach. You stood on your tiptoes, fingertips trying to grab onto them but it was no use. If Steve were here, he would have come over and taken them down for you with no hesitation, probably leaning down to steal a kiss as well. He always loved it when you needed him. The thought made your heart ache.
Shaking the thoughts away, you grabbed one of the chairs from the table and pulled it over, climbing onto it so you could reach the top shelf. It was the only thing you could think of and it seemed like a good plan, you were taller than ever now.
It was a good plan. Until you shifted your weight and the chair was pushed out from under you. Gasping, you felt yourself topple to the ground, landing awkwardly on top on your leg as you felt pain bloom in your ankle. The cookies fell to the ground alongside you as you pushed yourself up against the sideboard and inspected the damage.
Your ankle was shooting with pain and already swelling a little. As you tried to flex your toes, you winced as the sharp pain stabbed into you. Fuck, not only had you broken your boyfriend’s heart, not you’d broken your ankle too. What a day this was shaping up to be.
Racking your brain, you realised in that moment that there was only one person you truly wanted right now. Slowly pushing your way across the floor, you reached the phone on the wall and just about managed to grab it, dialling the number you knew by heart and praying that he was home.
He answered after two rings. “Hello?”
“Steve?” Your voice betrayed you as it wavered slightly. It was just so nice to hear him.
There was silence for a minute and you feared he might have hung up. But then he spoke. “What’s going on?”
Your lip trembled. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know who else to call. Steve, I fell and I can’t get up.” You sobbed. “I’m so sorry to ask but I can’t get up.”
Steve didn’t need to hear anymore, he could hear the fear in your voice. Despite how he was hurting, he couldn’t say no to you. “Alright, hold on. I’m on my way.”
As soon as you hung up, you started crying again. Even after everything he was still coming to your aid. There was no one else like Steve Harrington.
You heard the door open a half hour later and Steve’s familiar voice called out. “In here.” You shouted back to him. His footsteps came down the hallway and he appeared in the kitchen. The second he saw you lying on the floor, ankle swollen and face tear-stained, his features immediately softened and he hurried over to you.
“Honey, what happened?” He knelt down next you, examining your ankle. “Baby, that looks really bad.” The pet name fell from his lips without him even thinking.
“I just wanted a snack.” You said weakly. Steve glanced over at the chair lying on its side and the cookies littering the floor and put two and two together.
“Oh, honey.” He said softly. “Come on, we should get this checked out at the emergency room.” He wrapped your arms around his neck and picked you up off the floor, carrying you towards the door. Without hesitation, you buried your face into his neck and breathed him in, smelling the faint scent of his aftershave. You’d never get tired of that and another sob racked your body.
“It’s alright, baby. We’ll get you to the hospital in no time.”
“No, it’s not that.” You responded. “Steve, I’m so sorry. I never should have spoken to you the way I did.”
“Hey, it’s OK. We’ll talk about it later, yeah? First let’s get you sorted out.”
Steve drove you to the emergency room, eyes fixed on the road as he went. You yearned for him to look over at you, give you that smile and tell you everything was going to be fine. But there was still a lot of distance between the two of you. Still, he stayed with you in the waiting room and came in with you, even holding your hand as the doctor checked your ankle. As it turned out, it was just minor sprain and they sent you home with some painkillers and instructions to be on bedrest for the next few days. Steve promised to make sure you were OK, which gave you some hope.
The drive back to your place was quiet except for Steve asking if you were OK whenever he went over a bump in the road. You pulled up on your street and he came around to carry you back inside, taking you straight back to bed. He helped you change out of your clothes that smelled of hospitals and made sure the painkillers were on your nightstand where you could reach them.
“How are you feeling?” He asked you as he perched at the end of your bed.
“I’m OK.” You replied. “It still hurts a little but it’s not too bad.”
Steve nodded, looking down at his lap. “I can stay if you want, I’ll take the couch. Just in case you need anything?”
“No.” You said suddenly. “I mean, can you stay here with me?”
“Sure.” He agreed. “I’ll take the floor.” He stood up to go and grab some cushions but you reached out and caught his hand. He turned to look at you. “What’s wrong?”
“Steve, I don’t want you to sleep on the floor. I want you here with me, always.” You told him. “I didn’t mean a single thing I said earlier, I don’t want space from you ever. You’re the only one who still loves me despite everything I’ve done. And I love you for it. It’s just sometimes I feel like I don’t deserve all the nice things you do for me.”
Steve’s face furrowed in confusion and he came over to sit next to you on the bed. “You think you don’t deserve to be cared for?”
You shrugged. “I guess sometimes I feel like everyone should hate me because it’s my fault. She never would have died if she hadn't come looking for me and I'm still here safe and sound. It’s my fault that she died. I don’t deserve it.”
Steve’s heart broke all over again. “Baby, is that what you’ve been dealing with for all these months? Telling yourself it was all your fault? I had no idea.”
“I feel like it is.”
He smoothed the hair out of your face, wiping some stray tears away from your cheeks. “Honey, I know I can’t ever understand what you’re going through, but one thing I know for sure? None of this was your fault. What happened was horrible but it wasn’t because of you.” He sighed. “Here I thought you were just missing your friend, I didn’t know your brain was telling you such bad things.” He pressed a kiss to your forehead and you leaned into his touch.
“Can you stay here with me tonight? The only way I can sleep is if you’re with me.”
He smiled. “Of course I can.” He said. “How do you feel about taking a bath? I’ll help you out.”
You nodded, suddenly feeling a little better. “That does sound nice. I’m sorry, Steve. I should have just been honest with you instead of pushing you away. I don’t want to be alone.”
Steve was thoughtful for a moment. “How about this? Moving forward, we’ll come up with a kind of system. I’ll call you every morning and you give me red or green light. If it’s a bad day, I’ll still check in but I’ll let you have some space. If it’s a good day, we’ll do whatever you want to do. I know things will get better but until then, I’m going to be here. Just promise me one thing?”
“Anything.” You said.
“Don’t shut me out again. I love you, baby, I’m right here for you. Please just promise me you’ll tell me how you’re really feeling?”
You nodded, finally understanding that Steve wasn’t going anywhere. And you didn’t want him too. “I promise.”
That was enough for Steve. He helped you up out of bed and into the bathroom where he ran you a bath just the way you liked. Then he made sure to wash you hair, massaging you scalp gently as your eyes drifted shut, heart swelling. You’d never felt so cared for, he truly was the greatest boyfriend.
As soon as you were done, Steve helped you put on a clean set of pyjamas and carried you back to bed, grabbing a cushion to prop your ankle up. He climbed into bed beside you and you nestled into him, resting your head on his chest as he wrapped his arms around you. You glanced up at him and he leaned in to press a soft kiss to your lips, reminding you how loved you really were. You settled in next to him as he stroked your hair, already feeling sleep creep up on you.
“Hey, honey?” Steve whispered. “You know you’re still worthy of love, don’t you?”
You sighed. “I’m trying to remind myself.”
“I’ll remind you every day if you need me to.” He promised.
And you knew he meant it. In time, you’d make amends with all of the others. But for now Steve was there with you, and he wasn’t going anywhere.

And everything was finally perfect.
steve's hopelessly in love with you but you don't see it, too caught up in looking after your sister + her friends. After months of yearning, Jane + Max decide to take matters into their own hands and set the two of you up

The first sign of you coming home doesn’t come with an announcement, but with the sound of the deadbolt turning.
Your giggles slip through the front door of your shared apartment, along with the sound of your friend’s voice desperately trying to quiet you down.
(It doesn’t work.)
Not that Steve’s surprised by any of this; You’d told him a few days ago that you were planning on having a girl’s night once the week ended. To let loose, you’d said. After a rough month at work.
And Steve—
He had only pressed a kiss to your forehead and tucked an extra twenty into your wallet when you weren’t looking, telling you to have a good time and reminding you to call if you needed a ride home from the bar.
Evidently, you hadn’t needed that ride.
Steve rounds the corner at the same time you manage to get the front door open, stumbling in as laughter peels from your lips. Your friend, clearly sober and unhappy with being the designated driver for the night, gives him a tight smile as he catches you under the arms.
“Fun night?” he asks lightly.
“Don’t even start,” your friend says with an aggrieved noise. “I still have two more drop offs, so I’m gonna go.”
“Fair enough,” Steve says. “Get home safe.”
She nods, and he’s left with an armful of you leaning heavily on him, smiling up like he’s the best thing you’ve seen all evening.
“My knight,” you say, sighing softly as you bring your hands up to his cheeks, squishing them as you drag him down towards your mouth. “Knight Steve, here to save the day…”
He doesn’t fight it. And though the taste of vodka on your lips isn’t the most pleasant thing, he’s pretty sure there isn’t anything in the world that could ever stop him from wanting to kiss you.
“C’mon, pretty girl,” he says. He pulls back just enough that his nose brushes against your own. “Do you think you’re up for a shower tonight, or straight to bed?”
“Bed,” you say. “Too sleepy for a shower.”
He’s gentle as he leads you down the hall, careful to make sure you don’t tip over as you lean more and more of your weight into his side, and guides you into the bathroom. You grumble something incoherent, clearly unhappy with being here and not the bedroom, but he only circles your waist and lifts you onto the counter.
“I’ll be quick, honey,” he murmurs. “Promise.”
The Pond’s cold cream is easy enough to find — you keep the small pot right next to the faucet — and you soften under his touch as he rubs it into your skin, careful as he works the mascara from your lashes. He pulls a washcloth from the drawer and wets it, and you giggle as he wipes the cream from your face until every last trace of makeup is gone.
He grabs your toothbrush and runs it under the faucet, shaking his head when you try to bury your face into his shirt.
“Open up, baby,” he says. “You’ll thank me tomorrow.”
You tilt your face up, giving him your most petulant look, but open your mouth without argument and let him scrub the night from your teeth.
He keeps you steady when you lean over to spit the paste out into the sink and, after a minute of searching, applies balm to your lips so they don’t dry out.
It takes a bit more time for him to locate your moisturizer (he’s watched you carry it around the apartment as you apply it to know that it never stays in one place) and you’re half asleep as he smooths it across your cheeks, paying careful attention when he uses his thumbs to rub your eye cream in under your eyes.
He combs your hair and applies your hair oil the way he’s seen you do a million times, wrapping it up once he’s done and, finally, helping ease you from the bathroom.
Across the hall, you sit on the edge of the bed as he searches through the dresser. You mumble something that he doesn’t understand, but when he turns to see you blanketed in the golden light from the lamp, he finds that he doesn’t quite mind.
I love you, every molecule in his body whispers as he makes his way back to you. I love you, his heart sings as he pulls your top over your head. I love you, I love you, I love you, his soul screams when he kneels down to drag your pajama pants up your legs.
You let out a giggle when he ties the drawstring, and it’s only then that he looks up. There’s an adoring smile on your face and you card your fingers through his hair, your voice soft when you breathe out, “You’re so handsome, Steve. I’m so lucky that you’re mine.”
He stands, his heart beating just a little bit faster, and he can’t stop himself from pressing a kiss against your temple.
(Not that he’ll ever tell you, but every compliment that falls from your lips, every confirmation that he’s enough — that he’s enough for you—)
(It means more than he can put into words.)
You whine when he pulls away, reaching out for another kiss, and he feels guilty when he pries your hands from his face.
“Later,” he promises. “Let’s get you into bed now, yeah?”
He’s careful when he tucks the covers around you, making sure to arrange the pillows around your head the way he knows that you like them. He glances down, and there’s something about the way your lashes frame your eyes that has him leaning down to brush his lips against your forehead before saying, “I’ll be right back, okay?”
You hum, eyes slipping shut, and he slips out of the room.
It’s second nature, really, to fill up a glass with water and rummage around for pain killers in the kitchen cabinet, the same way that arranging them on the bedside table so they’re within arms reach comes to him without thought.
(He’s spent so long trying to keep everyone around him safe and out of harm's way. He’s spent the longest nights of his life, bruised and bloodied and aching, vision blurry as he counted the heads of those he loves the most, making sure they were still there and still breathing—)
(Who knew that it would lead him here? In a warm home filled with love and laughter, one where the worst thing he has to fear is you having a hangover in the morning?)
He flicks the light off and slides into bed behind you, tugging you until your back is pressed to his front, and finally—
Something in his chest eases.
“Steve?”
Your voice is quiet, thick with sleep, and it takes a moment for him to even realize that you’d spoken. You turn in his arms, tracing your fingers down his chin as you meet his gaze
“What’s up, honey?” he asks.
“Love you,” you whisper, earnest in a way a person only is when drunk, like it’s very important for him to know this right in this moment.
He huffs out a laugh. “I love you, too.”
“You’re just…” You clumsily pat his face. “You’re so nice, and so good. Do you know how good you are? Always takin’ care of people, takin’ care of me… So nice. Even when I’m a bother.”
He can’t help the smile that spreads across his face anymore than he can stop himself from turning his head, kissing the pads of your fingers with a kind of reverence that feels sacrilegious.
“I’ll always take care of you,” he says, resolution laced into every syllable. “And you’re never a bother, baby.”
You sigh, clearly content, and bury your face into his shirt. “Will you still love me in the morning?”
