Today we present you our most recent comicbook artist to join the project, Rui Lacas.
Rui Lacas has always been a comics artist. At 19 years old he was seeing his first work published and since 1989 he’s been relentless.
As a lot of artists usually do, he started being published in Portuguese anthologies like Banda, Shock Fanzine, BD’n’Roll, Mesinha de Cabeceira and others. He also worked for the comics magazines Selecções BD and Rua Sésamo.
With 20 years old of age, he was given the task of drawing and adapting Jorge Magalhães’ play Maldita Cocaína, a musical created by Filipe La Féria. After this enormous task, he worked with Pedro Baptista-Bastos drawing A Cauda do Tigre with great acclaim from the national comics scene.
After 4 years of interregnum, Rui Lacas starts a new phase of his career, this time flying solo. A Filha do Caranguejo is his first graphic novel starting his now usual style of writing introspective stories in different historical periods but almost always with rural Portugal as background.
Following Que é feito do meu Natal?, he participated in some anthologies like Venham+5, Efeméride, Vencer os Medos or Uma Revolução Desenhada: o 25 de Abril e a BD before releasing a series of different graphic novels.
In 2006 he makes his first big breakthrough into the French market releasing Merci Patron through Les Editions Paquet with great international acclaim before being published in Portugal, a couple of years later, as Obrigado, Patrão also with huge praise.
After releasing Asteroid Fighters, his most extrovert work where he mixes northern American and Japanese influences creating a superheroe team based on his friends from The Lisbon Studio, he spends a few years working on several projects and only releasing an account of the career of Portuguese band Sétima Legião.
In 2012, Rui releases 3 books he has been working for the past 3 years: Han Solo, the story of a Dutch bipolar tourist who falls in love with Lisbon and stays, A Ermida, a simple story about a mysterious robbery of the Crown’s jewels, and a new volume of Asteroid Fighters.
He’s currently working on finishing stories he left incomplete during his career and gathering unpublished ones to release a series of books collecting almost all of his work since the 90′s.
You can follow Rui through his Facebook page and Blog and if you’re interested in acquiring some of his work, visit his page at ComicHeart.
