u know I really think a tumblr rule of thumb should be 'don't say anything in a reblog you wouldn't say directly to the OP of the post' bcos like. by and large whatever you say in your reblog you are, in fact, saying directly to the OP.

there's like. SOME kind of really radical difference in how different people approach reblogging on this site bcos some people clearly do feel that whatever they say in reblogs is their own post and therefore their own business.

but like. by default when you reblog a post on tumblr what happens next is, the OP gets a notification that contains the text of what you said + a link to read the whole addition. you are in effect emailing them your addition. & then acting like they're the weird one if they asked wtf you're on about.

You don't get to act huffy and say "I was bored and reading all the notifications on that post" I get a notification! It was in my fucking face!

I do get it a bit w tags bcos they did used to be private but they haven't been private for like. It's gotta be the best part of 10 years now?? I get some ppl don't like the change but it's been SO long. Adjust your behaviour.

ppl in the notes quibbling about the tags thing:

a lot of people seem to have this notion that tags are their 'private space'. I see ppl getting annoyed at having their tags responded to and acting like OP is some kind of weirdo for having read them.

this made sense back when tags were only viewable by going through each response individually, but as I said upthread, tags have been public for some years now.

OP can read what you are saying in the tags on their activity feed. the only difference between a tag and a comment notification is one has a # at the beginning. acting like other users should treat your tags as if they're private when they are, objectively, not private is very silly. you have emailed them to the OP.

don't put anything in the tags of posts that you'd be uncomfortable with the OP seeing and responding to.
