“Whale…we’re gonna need a bigger boat.“ 

These scientists in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary got a treat (or maybe a fright) when a humpback whale breached surprisingly close to them. Small boats like this one allow permitted researchers to get close enough to whales to attach tags with suction cups. The tags then give them a wealth of information about the whale’s movements, sounds and more. 

If you’re out on the water whale watching or just in an area with whales, make sure to give the marine mammals plenty of space!
