for as long as omar could remember, he had always been aware of his abilities to speak to shadows, far before he even understood what that actually meant for him, eventually needing to pretend that he couldn't hear whispers in the air that others didn't so he wasn't othered any more than he already was for usually keeping to himself even then. he learned his abilities came from the shadows themselves after instinctively stepping in to stop his dad from hurting his mother, only resulting in his father getting badly hurt and leaving them both. the man did all that he could to protect his mother, hoping that it could be enough from feeling like such a burden with these newfound abilities that he couldn't control. by his adolescence he was abusing any substance he could get his hands on, choosing numbness as his release, a good few centuries drenched in a haze of denial and self hatred; to this day omar is still very hesitant when it comes to this chapter of his life...but it did lead him to where he was now, and he supposed that's at least worth something.

being the commander of armies to his court isn't an honor he takes lightly. he used training and honing his abilities alongside the shadows instead of against them as a form of rehabilitation, the battlefield being the only time he feels he has complete control over his abilities, where he doesn't feel fully like a monster, instead he's a leader worth following, given a title and all. he still struggles with letting others in and seeing himself as anything more than a burden but at least now he has a purpose, so maybe that's enough for now.

the seraphim shakes her head, “i’m sorry. i can be… a bit literal. i wasn’t offended, though.” she glances away, embarrassment colouring her cheeks as she realises she should have taken a moment to think through her response. since she knows she is too literal with things. and perhaps there was less of a general you in terms of referring to her court when it was just them, rather than the other courts now knowing. especially since she was not really part of a broader you before. “there was a blight. it overthrew the former ruler. he ruled the court of dusk. we became starlight later.” she bites her lip, the history making her realise that maybe that was connected to the notes she and night’s archivist had found. she knows that many of them have very few they are close to, but she had always assumed others would be similar in that they’d burn the whole world to protect the few they had. although… her own family had not. “i do what i can for the malgraves, and i would for the rest of starlight. but tia… she is my family.” she says. she watches him lower the knife, and she tilts her head a little, “i do not understand the people who do trust so easily, very well. it’s… confusing.” she says. but she’s always been a bit awkward and had difficulty understanding people. so it’s probably more her being odd. “i can agree to telling you what is important to know, in exchange for understanding autumn better.” she nods, after a moment. it would be helpful for her, to understand the other courts better.

he heaves out a sigh almost instantly as she explains the miscommunication and he's silently nodding, running a hand through his hair in silent relief that there wasn't any actual offense taken by his phrasing, but he's still as embarrassed as before, rubbing at the back of his neck, clearing his throat and glancing sideways before speaking up again. "good, good, I um...I should've phrased it differently anyway, I see how that can be...confusing." hearing her next words omar's brows furrow as he processes this, head tilting lightly in thought. "dusk...and then your court has been in hiding ever since? scared of another attack...? then what about hybern? why are they the only court to remember you all? did they ever come here?

he's chewing on his lower lip as he's able to understand where she's coming from in terms of service, still feeling crazy sometimes about how the high lady of autumn chose him herself for her protector, for the position of commander that gave him his purpose, but the bond she seemed to share with the high lady of her court sounded...nice. he knew he had a friend in the commander of night but he felt too anxious about thinking if she would consider their friendship a family, he wasn't sure he'd be very good at something like that. he huffs out what almost sounds like a laugh at her honesty. "no, it's exhaustively confusing. in fact I trust those the least." the man nods at astoria's agreement, the knife finally put away now as a truce is taken. "okay. you told me what role you played in your own court. i'm the commander of armies in the autumn court and the high lady catalina has entrusted me as her right hand. it's not as...intimate as your connection to...tia but it's not an honor I take lightly."

Her attempt at staying outside of the Starlight palace failed and even though she didn't trust the new court that appeared out of nowhere, hating that she did not know about them, Catalina could see a positive side in staying in their courts with her commander and second. From the inside, they could work up strategies on how to deal with the other courts, see who was willing to form an alliance and ultimately be vigilant about the new ad mysterious court and potential threat.

The sound of the heels of her boots against the tiled floor echoed through the corridors as she head down to her quarters in Sterallia with Omar walking close behind her. "You'll have to go in first and make a thorough sweep of the quarters, our chambers first, then everyone else's. I don't think they'll be stupid enough to put spying devices in our courts but— I don't know what to believe at this point." Almost in the same breath, she added. "I want a council with the High Lady of Starlight as soon as possible after this. We should find our Emissary next." At the entrance of the Autumn quarters, she turned to Omar. "And Kenna, she needs to be close by as well. You two are my shadows here. I want one of you by my side at all times. I don't want them to think I'm letting my guard down just because they're playing nice."

Catalina stepped back and let Omar through but didn't let him in alone, she followed after, back of her coat swiping as she turned to go after him.

omar had vowed to stand by his high lady's side when she chose him to step up alongside her and her second. as intimidating as he still found her, and as silently questionable as he found a few of her tactics to be (even then he could argue that he trusted her regardless, having known how long she had prepared for this), their thoughts on the new court was one they shared, for the most part. he did't trust this new kingdom that had seemed to come out of nowhere, with all these strangers with unknown motives. as far as they were all aware, there was nothing left to trust anymore.

his large strides behind her have a bit of a nervousness to them as he looks around them, unsure of what to make of the palace that was essentially now his home for the time being. he silently nods once at her first request, ready to take the precautions necessary in this new, unusual place. "I'll see to it soon as possible, I've meant to speak to their commander as well to see what any information I can get from that. I do remember the emissary has settled at one of the inns so I can let him know you need a word. and yes of course, my lady, i intend to make sure you and our people stay protected, this place...unnerves me. let me know if there is anything else I should know of."

once he makes his way through, he starts doing a quick look through everything, counters, dressers, corners, under the beds, behind the curtains, and turns back to catalina once seemingly coming up short...at least for here. "it's clean. ready to move ahead whenever you are."

malvina flops onto the grass next to where she’s found @commanderofthefall standing, glancing up at him. “i did not break anything yet, at least?” she says. although, it’s only been a day so there’s plenty of time for her to knock over things. so long as starlight’s ruler knows that had they been here on an actual real diplomatic visit, she’d probably have been left home due mostly to her inability to not knock over everything around herself when left unattended.

“did you have any idea this place was here?” she asks. she’s considered that it might mean they shouldn’t trust this court, but they haven’t really done anything to indicate it otherwise, and she doesn’t know if there was a reason to stay hidden, so she’s waiting to understand before she judges.

"I mean knowing you I think we can count that as a success already." he says it completely straight, face unchanging but his eyes are filled with humor before a small smile breaks through, fully giving him away as he points out his fully covered blade he carries around with him most of the time to lightly tap at her foot.

the man pauses at the next question before letting out a sigh as he takes a second to look at the space around them, missing autumn but knowing there's really nothing he can do in the matter as he joins her on the grass, careful not to get her wings as he does due to his height. "no. and i'm finding it hard to think of it all as some big coincidence that they felt the need to hide it from anyone...I mean as far as we know they could be...spies for this...thing on the loose...what do you think? you have any idea they were here?"

omar is unable to do anything but just stand there, even after catilina leaves them to settle, and he wonders if he squints enough the bunk bed in front of them would turn into two fully separate beds. but no. this was his reality now. he heaves out a sigh, running a hand through his mess of curls that had only gotten more unruly throughout the course of events that had led them all here. he glances at kenna next to him before deciding what the hell, already moving forward. "i'm taking the bottom one. it's fully on the floor." he glances up at the top bunk on his way to claim his own. absolutely not. not built with a six foot five commander of armies in mind.

Rivian stared at the man before him. Tired eyes, hands raised, a commander's bearing even in surrender. The blade didn't move. The voice was familiar. The face was familiar. Autumn Court? He'd seen him at the meetings, in the corridors, standing shoulder to shoulder with the others while chaos rained down around them. His grip on the commander's shoulder didn't loosen, but the knife stopped pressing. Just hovered there, a whisper away from skin, a reminder of how easily this could have gone wrong.

"You have terrible timing," Rivian said, his voice flat and exhausted. The adrenaline was already draining out of him, leaving behind nothing but a dull ache behind his eyes. "And worse instincts. Sneaking up on a spymaster in a dark archway." He shook his head, slow and almost weary. "You're lucky I recognized you before my blade didn't." He stepped back and sheathed his dagger.

"I don't have them, by the way. Answers. In case you were wondering. Everyone keeps looking at me like I do, but I've got nothing. Just a scrap of fabric and a headache." He leaned back against the wall, tipping his head up toward the unfamiliar stars. "What are you doing out here?" He asked, not looking at Omar. "Besides nearly getting your throat slit."

the second the man recognized one from summer and not an unfamiliar face from this new, unknown court, he had felt a bit of relief, though he was sure that wasn't what the other would have liked to hear so he kept it to himself. rivian didn't look too much better than himself, either. those...things just toying with them all had left them all so panicked and paranoid, now left alone for the time being with no answers or way out. his hands fall once the dagger is fully put away, still eyeing him for a few seconds just in case. "in my defense I was just needing to be alone. I didn't realize who you were, let alone a trigger happy spymaster...and I prefer the dark, anyway. it's comforting." the shadowsinger doesn't fully relax his stance either, though he does feel the silent truce between them.

"unfortunately I don't think any one of us do, at this point. tried sorting things through with other commanders and captains...admirals...nothing. we're just...trapped. with the stars mocking us." he looks up at the sky ahead of them. "like I said, I just needed a moment. thought I could recreate my own smoke spot on my roof back in autumn...but I don't trust it here...maybe that's why I'm off...why are you even here? trying to keep guard from...bats?"

it wasn't a surprise that the man was not very good at making friends. omar was more content just lurking around in winter when it started as just a celebration of all courts. trust for him was hard to come by, something that was always there after his dad and then only made more concrete when the high lady of autumn catalina decided that he was going to be here right hand, she needed him alert, guard up, and ready for whatever. and the sort of friends he did have was more because of their fighter positions, bonding through sparing, usually was his sweet spot. malvina had decided to introduce the two back in winter, when it was just a party. before everything had changed. this was always the hardest interactions for him, running into someone who wasn't exactly a friend just yet but enough of an acquaintance to not just...walk past without an acknowledgement. he hesitates, offering an awkward wave once her gaze meets his, hands quickly going behind his back as he trips a bit over himself. "penelope." were they even on first name basis yet? oh mother... "I was just...out. needed a moment to...breathe.. maybe find the training room... I hope you've settled alright, all things considered...

she watches as his grip on the knife tightens. “i am not that old, but there was a threat to the high lord’s life when he hid our court away. there were wards protecting us.” she says. “i am 600. my family has been here since before the wards went up, though they were too awful for me to learn much of my own heritage. and the ones who knew are gone. so. it’s gone. but the court has been here, protected. no one knew if what threatened the former high lord would still threaten us if we let the wards down, or if we revealed ourselves.” tia was the most important person in her life, and she would destroy everything in this world to protect her. “if keeping a secret from the rest of prythian would ensure the safety of your closest friend — of the one fae in the world you trust and love the most — would you keep it? even if it felt wrong?” she asks, eyes softening more when he stiffens. even as she had began to make friends, she had kept her vows to protect her found family. and the few she had begun to have friendships with, even if barely, she’d have rather been the one to tell them at a time it was safe to do so rather than do it like this. “i do not trust easily, nor do i make friends easily, even within my own court. that is from my own past and trauma. i can say that our court does not intend harm on anyone. we would not have brought everyone here if given any choice in it when we hardly know anything of the other courts. we were just as unable to leave winter as the rest, and we are also just as trapped here.”

omar goes stiff once more as he hears her clear up that she isn't in fact that old, and he internally panics at the thought of unintentionally insulting her through miscommunication and he suddenly wants the ground to swallow him whole, starting to wring his free hand and fidgeting a bit in place before impulsively interrupting her "--th-that's not what I meant, I didn't mean to imply that you're...that old, just...y-your court, in general. hidden. for so long." he babbled, was that even a proper sentence? all he knew was now he couldn't look her in the eye until he knew for sure she understood what he had intended. "...wait, none of you know what threatened him, then?" the man can't help but wonder if there was a connection between whatever that was and what was now currently toying with them all.

he bites his tongue at astoria's question of keeping the most important thing to him safe and the first to come to mind is his mother, since he didn't really have very many "loved ones" just...people he made a vow for and had a duty to, telling himself that the difference between the two didn't matter much, because he didn't have much to begin with. "...suppose it's felt i've done more for those I've felt less for...if that's true, I...apologize for that being your reality..." omar slowly lowers the knife just a bit and swallows as she continues, silently calling truce as he realizes they share more in common than just deadbeat dads. "you say you don't trust easily. neither do I. it's nothing to take personally...I don't really do personal...I might be convinced to come to an understanding if you tell me whatever else we should know about this court. in exchange for information of my own court, autumn."

she was always a bit too awkward to make friends easily, especially with how distrusting she is. and now there is even more reason for others not to trust her. they had been hidden away for millennia after the original blight — something long before her own existence. and with the losses faced by so many of the courts, and the distrust everyone already held for each other, she knows this just makes it worse. even if she hates the idea of all of these strangers in her home, she hates that they weren’t revealed to the world on their own terms. that she couldn’t explain things to the few she’d befriended before. she sighs when she sees omar ahead of her, knowing that he won’t be happy knowing that she’s been lying, especially with the way they had been headed towards friendship — something that was rare enough for her without this all. she eyes the knife, and she keeps her hands folded in front of herself. “our ancestors hid themselves away after a blight threatened the high lord’s life. we haven’t been a part of the mainland in millennia, and we have been isolated for millennia to protect our people.” she says, staring down at her hands as she wrings them. “i am second in command. my high lady is my closest friend, and i made a promise to her parents that i would always protect and look after their children. i wished to be able to tell you before any of this, on our own terms. we were initially brought to the winter court because a blight took our wards out. we didn't know anyone but hybern, didn't know how the other courts worked. before the fake memories, we did not know who we could trust, and then after... with everything happening... what else was i supposed to do? i cannot go against my court...” she trails off, and then; “i am sorry.” it’s rare, her apologising.

his grip on the knife tightens just slightly as he stands, eyeing her carefully as she starts to explain herself, keeping his guard up, unsure what he's able to believe anymore. but the more the woman spoke the more he had more questions, eyebrow furrowed as he stayed stood in silence. "...a...a millennia? you're telling me you've all just been around. in silence. for this long? how...how am I supposed to believe that you all survived that?" he was confused, alert, not sure what he was supposed to make of this, but, in spite of himself, there was also a small voice in his head. why would she lie about about being in survival for a millennia?

as she continued, he was finding it hard to keep his walls up, unfortunately able to deeply understand the duty of keeping a high family protected since the high lady of autumn herself had decided to trust in him for her own protection. something that they shared, despite his wariness of this odd new court he knew nothing of and was too guarded to try and understand. and he stiffens, hearing her mention that she wanted to tell him. as if he she owed him. because they were what? on the way to maybe being friends? that was...weird. different for him. "I understand not wanting to go against one's court but why, in this context, does it sound like a convenient little cop-out?" his eyes have softened some, hearing her apology, but he doesn't lower the knife, reminding himself that there is too much at stake here.

the moment they all found themselves in a whole new court that had been hidden for all this time, omar was even more tense than ever. almost each court had lost someone and now a whole other court just popped out of nowhere, and those in hybern knew about it and never found it important enough to bring up. the man was stressed out of his mind and was keeping his guard up for however long the nameless, faceless entity decided to keep them all trapped here for. the fact that everyone from starlight was among them during all the events at least since the winter celebrations under different roles and homes didn't sit well with him either.

the man is pacing back and forth, exasperated, trying to stay alert despite all the anxiety this had all now brought, twirling a butterfly knife in hand when he sensed someone coming by, and the moment he recognized her he stopped, hand with the knife now low and stretched out, keeping a space between them as the thoughts of how they met come back to him, how he said she was from hybern, they were just getting to know each other, perhaps were leading to something like friends...but he wasn't taking any chances now, all he wanted was to protect his people, and as far as he knew, this new court that kept them prisoner, and its people, were a threat to that until proven otherwise. "don't. i'm not hear to listen to whatever there is you or anyone else here has to say...I mean it. you said you were from hybern. all this time you were around us. hiding. lying. even before the fake memories, why?"

the dawn's commander was next for omar as he was trying to rally himself around all fellow commanders and captains after what had happened before the were moved to starlight. the new court made him tense, filled with new people he hardly knew. elian was someone he greatly respected and knew had a good head on his shoulders so he knew whatever he could gather from the man he could trust, at least for now. he makes his way over to the other, nodding in greeting. "commander castro. how have you been...faring with...everything? have you all settled? I was thinking of grabbing lunch if you...wanted to come with?"

even before their new position omar had always deeply respected jamie as a member of the high family in day who wanted more and decided to just...go after it. he was exhausted, as he was sure everyone else was but he felt it was his duty to try and keep his head above water as best he could, even in a whole new court he wasn't completely sure he could trust, he knew those that he could and for now that was enough, making his way over to the new commander of day to check in. "newest commander. have you all...settled okay? the day court?" he was never really good at this, was he? thank the mother he wasn't the emissary (autumn's very own did quite well for himself on that part, but omar wouldn't admit that to his face, it would get to his head too much. ) "I was just about to head to the markets...a new sword or maybe a hand knife might do me some good, if you wanted to join?"

The archway leads to nowhere, just a dead end. A wall, a patch of sky visible through the opening above. Rivian doesn't care. He's not here to go anywhere. He's here to breathe. The meeting had been suffocating. The voice, the body, the way everyone had looked at him afterward like he should have the answers. He's the spymaster, he should know something... have a lead, even. But he had nothing. Nothing but a scrap of fabric and a headache and the creeping sense that something was very, very wrong. He presses his back against the cold stone wall and tips his head up. The stars blink down at him, unfamiliar and unhelpful.

Scrape. Boot on stone. Close. Too close. Rivian's dagger is out before he's finished turning. His body moves on instinct, centuries of training, of survival, of knowing that hesitation gets you killed. The blade catches the starlight as he pushes off from the wall, closing the distance between them in three silent strides. He doesn't raise the knife, doesn't brandish it like a warning. He makes himself small and unassuming, just another courtier taking a late-night walk, nothing to see here, nothing to fear.

His free hand comes up, open, empty, harmless as he steps closer. He closes the last inch of distance. His body blocks the starlight, casting them both in shadow. And then his knife is at their throat, a whisper of cold metal against warm skin. His other hand grips their shoulder, holding them in place.

"Not a sound," he breathes. "One wrong move and you won't make another."

omar is standing by with a smoke in hand, not really planning to do much in the moment but to just be. he's exhausted, and wary, as they all should be after everything had happened like it did. after deciding to meet with other fellow commanders and captains once they all settled into the new court the man just needed a moment alone. it wasn't until long though that he noticed there was someone else up there with him, and it took him a second to gather himself before starting to make his way over, when the other moves faster, raising his hands up, tired as his eyes set on the dagger he has in hand, and he moves to dodge it, only for the man to press it up against the other side of his throat.

he meets his gaze with tired eyes, hands up again as he keeps his eyes on him. he really needed to step up his instincts, no matter how unexpected the other was. "are you...trying to do the work for them now? give 'em less of us to slaughter...? kind of a dark way to get to an end game."

CASSANDRA WAS HAPPY TO BE BACK HOME. She'd missed Starlight, during the month she'd spent in the Winter's court with all those serpents. The false memories that had been implanted in her mind had seem like a nightmare, but there were other things present that she'd love to forget.

the way she got back in Starlight, for one.

She wasn't really in a mood for company, but it was only a matter of time before someone join her - someone always did. Casseia sighed to herself, fingers curling around the silver goblet of red wine she'd been slowly drinking for the past hour. What a joke. Those wretched, unnamed things that cast them from court to court, it left the starsong in her veins cold and hollow.

Sighing deeply once more, Cassandra lets out a rasp chuckle, void of any merriment, as a fae slides in the seat opposite of hers. "What a ride, huh? First they terrify us, then they blind us. I'm almost disappointed they haven't finished us off on the road."

omar had been sat near the other in the tavern, deciding that he was due some fae wine after all they had been through, he was exhausted now, mentally planning out to meet with the rest of the fellow commanders and captains of the courts to figure out how to keep everyone left safe, but he would be lying that it was hard to keep his head up now in a new court that had been hiding this whole time. why was it kept a secret? why did they keep the charade going for so long? hearing the woman's words he tenses for a second, glancing over to her with a nod in greeting, trying to silently decipher what she was trying to get at with her tone. "i'm not...you must be happy to be back, though?" he can only assume this is her home, since he doesn't remember ever seeing her. it was unsettling, a whole new set of strangers with motivations a mystery to the rest of them.

He was sick of people asking. For just a little bit, Luc wanted no one to ask him or even know that he could scry. Perhaps talking to someone he really didn't know would help. "I can be quiet, or you can talk, if you need to."

"...ah." he nods shortly, still lingering in place as he tries to figure out what to do with his hands. being so used to isolating himself because of his own abilities he couldn't imagine what it was like to have others just...pester you for whatever because of them. especially with how everything had played out so far...but the man wasn't really one to be very helpful when it came to...cheering up. distractions, however? distractions he knew fairly well. "...ya I probably would just hide out if I were you...i'm not...even in your position and I still can't...deal with...so many people in one place." he's a little surprised when the other then offers to stop talking, or even to let him speak himself, already having been mentally thinking up where else he could go from here to leave the other alone. "...oh. um. i'm not really one for...talking...trying to find answers myself has led me nowhere so...I dunno. I've got a smoke if you've got a light..? if you even want one, that is..."

having made enough money to fill yet another leather purse on his belt, saionji ren thanks the idiot cadre from dawn for their sportsmanship and excuses himself from the banquet table. as he moves through the room, he pockets a silver case of freshly rolled cigarettes as well as an engraved flask of some rare sourmash whiskey ( cheers, E.J.N. ) — all while looking for the nearest exit. it's then that he sees autumn's commander, omar finnigan, slip out onto a balcony, the door well-concealed by several layers of draped tapestries. ren considers his options a moment, then makes his way through the labyrinth of tables and follows suit.

for some reason, ren often finds himself curious about omar's well-being. but reasons why he does anything are always deftly glossed over.

outside, he's expecting to feel cold air, but enchantments keep the balcony suffocatingly warm. the third lets out a disappointed "tch" when he realizes. after working those soldiers free of the tesserae in their pockets, the bracing night air would have been a nice reward.

"commander," he mumbles around the cigarette in his teeth, sidling up behind the man and leaning his hips back against the balustrade. "don't tell me you're witholding those sick dance moves of yours from these haughty foreigners. that stale atmosphere in there could use a swift kick in the ass."

knowing omar's disposition, ren is obviously joking. but his delivery is dry, muted. perhaps difficult for one to discern the sarcasm.

omar tries to linger around with his court as they all are gathered together, he really does, but after a second it's hard not to want to stray and find some peace and quiet. he's quick to slip out and he thinks that he's lucky enough not to catch anyone else's eye while doing so, but the immediate stiffness that usually follows when usually realizing he's not alone melts away once he recognizes the voice of the other. if it were anyone else the man would have been a bit exasperated at being followed. he felt as though he had been bumping into almost everyone while they were all here in winter, it was a bit much for the introvert to take. but his third had seen him through a lot so...he had his privileges...whether the fae would actually admit to them or not. that didn't keep him from letting out a deep sigh, though, trying hard not to let the other see him crack a small smirk at the comment, trying to save it by crinkling his nose a bit at the thought. "uh...don't think tonight's really the night to put them all to...shame like that just yet...you, um...are you holding up?"
