I have a message from a Mister Donald. He tells me to tell you that he apologizes for being quiet. He had some health complications and needed to take an extended vacation with his wife. He also added he hated most of it and is looking forward to hopefully seeing you soon.

Health complications? He's...fine, isn't he, Anon? For all the fighting and banter we've thrown each other's ways over the years, he's still my best friend.

But he shouldn't feel like he needs to apologize. I've been more swamped than Pastoria City as of late.

So how is everything in Sinnoh? I trust not many people are troubling you?

We're having some internal issues and I'm suspecting the other ex-Commanders are our perpetrators. If at all possible, I'd like to have somebody come out here and find out why our satellite labs are being sabotaged. I'm displeased and concerned for the both of us.

Charon, I was wondering... Is there anything we can do to help Janet? ...I don't like seeing her like this.

Anything...

Anything at all? I suppose we could unplug the entire system and hope that works. It will end up unleashing the true personalities of all the Grunts and potentially bankrupt the company if they decide not to stay, but she means a lot to you. Doesn't she? Even my financial well being?

I guess we can give that a try, see if it works...

Oh? What sorts of projects have you moved on to, if you don’t mind me asking? -He paused- I think I might have…I know I met someone just recently and I think he was a scientist. Perhaps it was that Kotori fellow you just mentioned.

I’m not sure, to be honest. I know I have the Psychic TM, and I probably have the Psybeam one somewhere, too. I have a few Psychic TMs…

A trouble maker? Really? -amused- Yes, I suppose she is…

I’ve met all kinds in my travels, and personally, I’m not one to judge. We all have things and associations we’re not proud of, so no use harping on others for it. -He shrugged. As an ex member of Neo Team Rocket and the Mask of Ice, Will couldn’t really say much.-

If he was a blue-eyed fellow with short blond hair, glasses, and an Arceus pendant around his neck, then yes. That'd be Damarus Kotori. He's a good kid. A little anxious around others, sure, and maybe a bit insecure on some things, but I couldn't ask for a better assistant.

Psywave? Psyshock? With a specialization like yours, I'd highly recommend stockpiling the Psychic TMs for future use. What's the harm?

I like that. It isn't anyone's place to judge others for past wrongdoings. That's very deep of you...Will, was it? Sometimes, we do what we have to, and that's it.

Pleasure to meet you, Charon. So you were a researcher and worked with TM’s? I’ve used a fair few for my team over the past couple of years, mostly to cover their weaknesses. That, and the Psychic TM came in quite handy.

-He tilted his head- Your daughter? Why does that sound familiar. I hate to see her when she awakens to that surprise. And you’re with Team Galactic as well? HUh. Small world~ -He couldn’t really say much, for he was once involved with Team Rocket when he was younger. Albeit it was a small offshoot branch run by a crazy old guy in a mask.-

I was one of the founding programmers for the device, so yes. I've worked with TMs for a very long time now. There's still plenty of moves that need to be synthetically duplicated, but I've moved on to greater projects now. Did you ever have the opportunity and pleasure of meeting Mr. Kotori? He's more or less my research assistant these days. Good man...just a little insecure.

Psychic, eh? Yeah, I can see why you'd be partial to that one. Did you ever manage to get your hands on the Psybeam disc?

[He laughed a little.] She's a trouble maker, that child of mine...not that she's been a child for a long time now. She's old enough to have children of her own. Give her another five to ten years, and I'd say grandchildren, too, not that she has any of either.

...so you know, I do appreciate you aren't jumping down my throat for my choice in business partners. It gets old when people do that.

Honestly? Pretty easily! You’d be surprised what you can pick up from a person’s aura; it makes me an especially effective judge of character, if I do say so myself.

So yes, suspicious… and vaguely familiar.

Perhaps so. I never much looked into auras. The Galactic Commander who did, Io, is currently missing in action. Nobody knows where she is and it's probably for the best. I never cared for her.

Now you have my curious. What seems "vaguely familiar" to you, young man?

Will, hm? I should introduce myself, too. It's been ages since I've been in Johto, but I might be spending Christmas in Kanto with my daughter and her live-in girlfriend. They just don't know it yet. She'll blow a gasket when she finds out, but it'll be worth it.

I'm Charon, a former Silph Co. researcher. There's a high chance I programmed a TM or two you've used in the past. See, these days, I'm known for something very different. I'm the man operating a new and improved Team Galactic out in Sinnoh.

Well a bit of both. I’ve been so busy with projects that time seems to pass by quickly! One time, when I was making a giant mecha, I didn’t realize over 9 months had passed from start to finish.

Just think. If I had a wet and nasty night with some steamy young thing at a concert, she could have conceived another Charon-spawn by now. How time does fly!

The way Leslie initially responded made it seem as though she had not heard what Charon had to say. She greeted the old man, “Hello Charon,” in an attempt to be polite that actually achieved the exact opposite. She left a significant pause hanging in the air before moving onto Charon’s offer for insight—something she was not sure she needed, but was also willing to accept.

“I am glad. What is it you have to say?”

"You saw for yourself what Sird is like. I'm not sure what working underneath her version of Team Rocket's research department will be like for you, but I hear she is much more militant with grants than I ever was. If you want to succeed, you need to meet her approval within your first few months, otherwise you'll fail there."

Now, if that were to happen, she could always come back. Somebody as brilliant as Leslie would always be welcome to come back, so long as the old man was running the show. "I wish you well out there. Kanto is completely different, but you don't need me telling you that. You already know."

There were collars. There were always collars. And as of right now, Leslie was inspecting each and every one by hand, looking for nothing less than perfection. Everything she could call her own needed to be at their best. After all, change was coming. 

Her inspection was serving two purposes, in fact. Of course, she wanted to ensure that her work was indeed in “working order”, but in addition, she was expecting a guest. Her lab would be pristine. Not that it was ever far from the tediously-neat, straight-rowed, sanitized state that Leslie sought to restore, but again: perfection was key.

The room was nearly silent. Every once in a while, metal would clink against a stone table, Porygon would make a clicking noise, or a computer would whine, but for the most part, the quiet rang loudest. 

Which is why Leslie responded to the click of an opening lock, her head facing the door before it had even opened. Her guest had arrived.

The sound of footsteps permeated the otherwise silent laboratory. Miranda already left after the merging, for fear of becoming a Team Rocket commodity. Charon, however, could call all shots now. Team Rocket made sure of that. The only person on the face of this earth he'd ever have to answer to would be Giovanni and no other. Only Giovanni.

The fat old man made his way into Leslie's lab. "I heard the news secondhand. You'll be departing, won't you?" That was fine. He figured someone this ambitious would want to try something new. "I'm not coming here to stop you. I just want to make sure you are absolutely aware of what your future with them will be like."
