1970-Today Terror through our ages
I think it goes without saying that with the progressive innovation that poses as a sort of spearhead for American development through the years. one might think that our social, racial and criminal justice programs would all follow. . . right?Â
Unfortunately, this is just the sort of deep-fried fictional fantasy that we as Americans liked to feed ourselves and other countries for the sake of being able to appear as cultured and mature as all the other strong countries at the water cooler-- however our track record doesn't exactly tell the same tale.
May 11, 1970, marked the day of the Augusta riot , triggered by the considerably questionable death of the 16-year-old” mentally disabled” teen, Charles Oatman . When confronted with the beaten and battered body of young Oatman, the officers at the prison claimed that the young man had “ fallen from his bunk”  Grady Abrams, a former city councilman, shared blatant skepticism with this tale.Â
“There was this 16-year-old kid that had been brutally beaten,” he said. “He had three gashes the length of his back maybe about an inch deep. The back of his skull was crushed in. He had cigarette burns from the tip of his fingers down to his toes. They were all over his body. . .The explanation that Carrie had gotten was that Oatman had been in a card game and had lost to his fellow inmates,The game went in such a way that, if you lose, you would get beaten. The official explanation coming from Sheriff (E.R.) Atkins was that Oatman got hit while he was on his bunk and fell off the bunk bed and busted his skull causing his death. Well I didn’t go for that.”Â
Even prior to this event the racial tension in the communities of the U.S had been building ever so steadily, so even after they learned through investigations that Oatman’s death was indeed caused by his fellow inmates, It was too late.Â
Hundreds of enraged black citizens gathered in the heart of the city and began targeting non-black establishments and even bystanders. Bricks were tossed through windows, fires were set ablaze and according to  Richmond County Corner Nathan Widener, all six of the victims who had been shot in these riots had been “shot in the back – one as many as nine times,” according to the May 15, 1970, issue of The Augusta Chronicle.
This theme of both questionable and even outright brutish interaction between citizens and our police force only escalates throughout the years with incidents popping up in Tompkins Square Park police riot of 1988 in which multiple police officers reportedly resorted to excessive violence to enforce a recently introduced curfew.Â
This tension continues to permeate society with the scandal behind the Rodney King beating.
As well as the less-publicized shooting of Immigrant Amadou Diallo who was reportedly shot 41 times under the false pretense that the young man was supposedly “armed”Â
In yet another demonstration of excessive police brutality, we have the 2014 incident In Ferguson Missouri where 18-year-old Michale Brown was gunned down by police officer Darren Wilson. The death of the unarmed black male invited a number of riots and civil unrest all throughout the country and inspiring an onslaught of riots in Missouri itself.  The riots that resulted from Michale Browns death became only an opportunity for more excessive police violence which resulted in numerous injuries .Â
Even though these events were truly sad, a spark of good was born from this tragedy. Finally after years of silence for those who suffered from a crooked justice system, we finally began to have commentary in or national media that brought all of this to light and began to further or fight for justice in our own criminal justice system.Â

the American Dark Ages 1940-1969
In the shadow of a day, we will never forget, in December of 1941 our country suffered a horrendous loss as the Japanese bombed our naval base at Pearl Harbor. On this day 2,403 men and women alike were killed, 1,178 wounded. This count consisted of Marines, Army personnel, Navy soldiers, and even civilians.
One would think that in the light of such a horrific event, the US would truly work to set aside its internal differences between men and strive with more vigor to truly become what it claims to be as “ ONE Nation Under God”  But unfortunately, even this isn’t quite enough. Even though there was a multitude of non-violent movements in the direction towards true civil rights and equality to all men under our flag, America still manages to be a Neanderthal of a country, perpetuating its tradition of hate crimes, especially throughout the southern states.
All through the 19th-century whites have utilized lynch laws and the establishment of lynch mobs as a means to control the black community through methods of inflicting fear in order to hold on to the fleeting idea of white supremacy.Â
written in 1905, by the author James E. Cutler The Lynch-Laws were the first actual intelligent driven study detailing the practice of lynching and its significant to the United States.
a common misconception about lynchings is that lynchings stop at hangings and shootings, however, Lynchings extend to burning at the stake, maiming, dismemberment, castration, and other hideous types of physical torture. This is all more or less brought on to sustain a type of social caste system in the South. Lynching, just like every other method of dehumanization, was seen as the most effective means of control.
All through history books and criminal reports there are multiple pseudo-statistics covering the number of lynchings in America however, biases restrict the actual numbers, at least prior to 1882. (chicagotribune.com) Following the Chicago Tribune’s report, the Tuskegee Institute produced a report in 1892 where they began to make a systematic composition of lynching statistics. Beginning in 1912, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People kept an independent record of lynchings.
Even the statistics represented in historical records were based on the numbers reflected in local newspapers , however, because of the sheer size of the south and its more rural nature,a lot of information either fell to the side or was misrepresented by the basis of the areas. it is easy to assess that lynching’s escaped publicity in the press, therefore, there are mistakes in the available lynching statistics.
Today there are many different resources with these numbers, however, they are all still don't line up with each other. The NAACP lynching statistics give a higher report than the Tuskegee Institutes figures.  Some historians consider conservative. For example, in 1914, Tuskegee Institute reported fifty-two lynching’s for the year, the Chicago Tribune reported fifty-four, and The Crisis, the official organ of the NAACP,gave the number as seventy-four.
Most would find these discrepancies concerning, however, they are due to the fact these figures are a reflection of what was considered lynching, and other factors that would sway the numbers.Â
The Tuskegee Institute has it listed that, between the years 1882 and 1951, 4,730 individuals were lynched in the United States:
3,437 Blacks 1,293 white
3 The largest number of lynchings occurred in 1892. Of the 230 persons lynched that year, 161 were Blacks and sixty-nine whites.
It is documented that in the 19th-century blacks weren't the only individuals to be lynched but whites, Asian immigrants, as well as Mexican immigrants.
from 1830 to 1850 a large portion of the individuals in the U.S that were lynched were indeed white , however, by the 1890′s, the percentage of black victims skyrocketed the total number of Black lynching victims were twice the number of white victims.
Lynchings were not isolated in any one given area of the U.S . however,a larger portion of them was concentrated in southern border states.
The basis’ on which blacks were lynched, included but were not limited to,: assault, rape, attempted rape, robbery and theft,  insulting a white persons, and miscellaneous offenses such as disputing with a white man, trying to register to vote, unpopularity, self-defense, testifying against a white man, attempting to form or engaging in a romantic relationship with a white woman,, and peeping in a window.  ( Tuskegee Institute records through 1951)
More often than not the individual accused of the crime was not always guilty. Â A special study by Arthur Raper he noticed 1/3 of the victims were falsely accused and there was also a multitude of cases in which mobs attacked the wrong person.
The racist myth of Blacks uncontrollable desire to rape white women was utilized as a device to support lynchings of Blacks.
Most people who formed the lynch mobs were more often than not ,working class laborers or farmers who were in the same socioeconomic groups as most blacks and saw them as a threat to their lively hood as they were competition for jobs and the like.
It was more often than not that lynchers were rarely ever given concequence in court or even sentenced. The judge, witnesses and, jurors were usually all white and in agreement with lynchers.Â
The participants in lynch mobs ( even if they were actually arrested ,which was rare) They were usually let go with very little to no consequences. Arthur Raper estimated, from his study of one hundred lynchings, that at least “one-half of  lynchings occur with police officers participating.”
 W. E. B. DuBois was correct when he stated: “...the white South feared more than Blacks dishonesty, ignorance, and incompetency, Blacks honesty, knowledge, and efficiency.”
From 1892 to about 1905 we see a slow decline in lynchings. There was an annual average of sixty-two lynchings for the years 1910 to 1919. Although, beginning in 1923 lynchings began to grow markedly fewer, and finally in the1930s and 1940s it became more rarer. During these two decades, the annual rate of lynchings dropped to about ten and three. Even though the actual frequency of lynchings declined after 1892, the percentage of Black victims increased.
This is another clear cut example of the atrocities of our countries past, atrocities that make most shudder in disgust. It is difficult to see the full ironies of this situation without considering both the vehement disgust with the acts of people in the past alongside  the unfortunate fact that all of this is still happening in the 21st century with little notice and the fact that is even treated jokingly.Â
It is said that between 1882 and 1968, close to 5,000 lynchings (73% of the victims were black) took place on American soil” It is also said that this estimate does little to account for the many unknown individuals who have lost their lives due to the terrors of white supremacy.
According to Richard Perloff, A Professor of Communication at Cleveland State University writes in his own study on Lynching in the U.S. That the reasoning behind the remaining presence of lynching is in part due to the Medias negligence in reporting the details of these ongoing atrocities. Â
Our damnation of the individuals in our countries past in light of our current lack of progress is not only troubling but seriously worth noting.Â

Race Riots 1914-1945
Even given the setting WWI provides, & the natural nationalism that typically spurs from such occasions usually allows for momentous pride through the nation, however, even in moments of unity for the American people there is still the opportunity for the nature of the countries darker roots to emerge. Â
Although our main historical focus did not occur till 1919 it has its roots in 1915 with the release of The Birth Of A Nation. This film worked to “exploit the sexual stereotypes imposed on black males with the intent to reestablish the mentality of white supremacy.” This opened up the opportunity for many whites of this time to lean heavily on their preferences for all white neighborhoods, schools , restaurants and other establishments.
The pressure of this social tension finally reached its pinnacle when a number of race riots broke out. One of the most bloody accounts was the happenings on May 28th, 1917 on the streets of east St. Louis. 1917 when 470 African American workers were hired to take the places of the white workers who had gone on strike against the Aluminum Ore Company. The final catalyst reared its head when word of a murder of a white man by an armed black individual stirred up a number of white mobs who rampaged through the town assaulting every colored individual they came across. The violence inflicted upon colored citizens of St. Louis became so heavily rampant that its Governor Frank O. Lowden had to call in the National Guard. After this, the mobs slowly dwindled, however, the violence was far from over.
July 2, 1917. After the May 28th riots, nothing was done to provide security for white jobs and this only furthered the already towering level of hostilities towards African Americans. Â Unfortunately, there was absolutely no reform within the city police force and therefore not only no actual progress in quilling the violence but it even added to the havoc. Â Governor Lowden ordered the National Guard to leave the city, leaving the people with thick racial tension.
On July 2, 1917, the chaos ensued. Men women and children alike were killed in the streets. At this point, mobs of white towns folk began to gather and set fire to black establishments, schools, and homes. The scenes in the city were like something out of an apocalyptic film, and the National Guard was forced to return. The damage estimated at close to $400,000.
The NAACP sent W.E.B. DuBois and Martha Gruening in order to gather a report on the violence. From this visit, the essay “Massacre at East St. Louis.” Was created. The NAACP also staged a silent protest where Tens of thousands of men, women, and children marched down the fifth avenue dressed in their Sunday best in silent protest against violence. Â
The Universal Negro Improvement President, Marcus Garvey said: “This is a crime against the laws of humanity; it is a crime against the laws of the nation, it is a crime against Nature and a crime against the God of all mankind.”  He also believed that the entire riot was part of a larger conspiracy against African-Americans who moved North in search of a better life:Â
“The whole thing, my friends, is a bloody farce, and that the police and soldiers did nothing to stem the murder thirst of the mob is a conspiracy on the part of the civil authorities to condone the acts of the white mob against Negroes.”
It's easy for us to look back at this period of time and objectively scrutinize the horrible violence spurred by the social divide that was formed by something as silly as the race. . . However, this is an ongoing problem that is ever-present today. We have had several incidents under the Obama administration alone.
Firstly, we have the Oscar Grant Riots. In 2009, Finally In 2010 police officer Johannes Mehserle shot black Oscar Grant in Oakland, California. Even though Johannes was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter radicals still went off the deep end and began vandalizing police cars and even scared the Mayor into hiding in the Town hall.
Trayvon Martin.
Once George Zimmerman was unfortunately cleared of murder in his shooting of the young black youth Trayvon Martin, local rioters in Los Angeles were reported to have damaged multiple properties such as stores, cars, and even went as far as assaulting a TV reporter and cameraman before looting a local Walmart . In Washington, D.C. a white male with no involvement on either end of this uprising was murdered by three rioting black males and was reported to be told by his attackers that , “This is for Trayvon Martin.”Â
Manuel DiazÂ
In 2012 after 25-year-old Manuel Diaz was shot to death after he ran from police , locals began to assault officers by throwing a number of items at them. The people's outrage soon escalated said situation, with the Orange County Register reporting:
“At least five people were reported hurt in the unrest, with crowds setting fires, smashing windows and throwing rocks and other projectiles at officers in riot gear who fired non-lethal rounds at demonstrators refusing to disperse.”
Kimani Gray Riots.
in 2013  after 16-year-old Kimani Gray was killed by police because he "allegedly" pointed a handgun at them,  Brooklyn experienced a surge of riots. According to the New York Daily News, A crowd of 200 people, left a vigil site chanting, “NYPD, KKK, how many kids did you kill today.”
“things quickly got out of hand as some protesters tried to climb on police motorcycles. Men and women were pepper-sprayed and thrown to the ground and handcuffed.” That incident followed another memorial vigil that went wrong the night before, when according to the NYPD, “a large, disorderly group [began] tossing bottles at police.” The crowd in that incident trashed a Rite Aid and robbed the store.”
There are so many that like t reflect on the past as the horrors that were and forget to realize the terrors that still ARE.

The U.S: Forged in the fires of violence. (1866-1914)
Our History has been riddled with violent occurrences that are often doctored to appear to be symbolic or significant rather than observed as the bloody atrocities they are. I’ve often wondered what sort of moral transformation have we had to go through to even get to where we are today; Which Unfortunately- Isn’t too far from where we were.
Frankly we didn’t have such a great start considering the first man we praise for “Discovering” America was a violent man whom believed in white supremacy. That man is none other than good old Christopher Columbus.
Columbus conducted his genocide way before 1866 so we will leave that maniac be for now, however; He was the first in a long line of white men that would devastate tribes of this land. We would continue to drive them from their lands for the territory, gold, and glory. We scorched their lands, destroyed the buffalo, The animal in which the plains Indians hunted and utilized for food as well as many other necessary uses. By 1893 The number of buffalo in the plains decreased from an approximated 300 Million to a measly 400 by 1893.
While we continue to terrorize the indigenous people of this land our reign of terror only continues against people on the still coming into the land.
The original pilgrims that made their way to the U.S they came seeking religious freedom and for the opportunity for a new start. The immigrants that began to pour into the country in the late 1800’s came for the very same opportunities only to be met with immense hostility and aggression. In 1871 a mob of over 500 white males “Attacked, Robbed, and Murdered the occupants of the area.  Several Chinese businesses were looted and damaged in the process. In this horrid happening 17 lives were lost and countless others were injured all because of racial bigotry.
This sad day was documented as The Chinese Massacre of 1871.
If all this weren’t enough we still have the continual violence aimed at our African American community. All throughout the country many white men and women still held a degree of distaste for the now free blacks of the time. Lynching’s and hangings were not uncommon and it was not unusual for the individuals behind the hate acts to get away with such atrocious acts.
On December 24th of 1865 The KKK finally established itself as and began to terrorize black families, businesses, and those who associated with black individuals. Â This white supremacist group went on to terrorize none white communities throughout the years.
Lets talk about the present day Shall we~
As of today, according to cns news.com ans as confirmed by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports of 2014. “In 2014, the nation’s law enforcement agencies have written that there are up to 6,727 victims of hate crimes.
According to the FBI’s Uniform  Hate Crime Statistics, 2014, it is reported that anti-religious hate crimes make up 1,140 victims in the U.S. in 2014.
Within the statistic of those 1,140 instances of anti-religious hate crimes : 56.8 percent [56.8%] were motivated by Anti-Semitic intent.” In short that makes up for 647.52 instances where Jewish individuals were targeted.
A fantastic “16.1 percent [16.1%] were anti-Islamic  bias,” this amounts to 183.54 instances where individuals of muslum decent were victimized.
In the U.S., Jews were targeted incredible 40.7 percent (40.7%) more than Muslims in the year 2014. Â
“Since 9/11, we’ve had over 1,000 investigations into acts of anti-Muslim hatred, including bigoted actions, with over 45 prosecutions arising out of that,” Lynch said at the dinner, which marked the organization’s 10th anniversary. “I think sadly that number’s going to continue.”- Attorney General Loretta Lynch, during the Muslim Advocates dinner. December 3, 2015
You would think that in light of the genocides and instances of racial terror that this country has endured that we might have learned something about what to watch for or even how to combat these situations and yet-
Groups such as the KKK are still alive, well and terrorizing communities TODAY
We still have gangs battling over territory. From the Bloods and Crips to the Mongols and the Hells Angles. We are still waging war for land and its spoils. People are still trying to seek solace to the land we came to for the very same dream and yet we are still meeting them with the very same hostility and aggression we presented them with back in the late 1800’s.
Its this kind of Macabre activity that exists in our history and unfortunately, Is still very present in this day and age.
