haruhi’s reticence, like kyouya’s, is a defense mechanism for her. she’d rather not spill her emotions & weaknesses ( her fears, even embarrassments ; note that she diverts her eyes & her body, if she can, when she’s flustered ) onto others for a couple reasons :

like her mother, haruhi loves to help others & push them forward. it’s what she wants to put out into the world & she’s not certain on how to react when the tables are turned. she’s rarely had to because she never allows herself to. she forced herself to grow up too fast after her mother passed away. it’s all part of her independence, helping herself so her loved ones have their time to themselves & they don’t have to worry about her constantly. she knows what that’s like.

ADDING ONTO THIS, i think her insecurities are forgotten because of this. she has her moments in the manga where, although we know she doesn’t mind being referred to as male or appearing as androgynous as she does ( i mean heck, she’s gender fluid in my mind ), at times she gets down about it. i.e. “i’m just a tanuki ( hikaru compared her to one when accused of crushing on her, she clearly remembered this ). i have a flat chest...” “but even though i’m a woman, i’m just a ‘daughter’ to him.” “young boy...that’s right, when people look at me, they see a boy.”
