During the Middle School interdisciplinary project on Exploration, students explored famous mathematicians, the evolution of language and impact of twitter, the impact of wildlife conservation, and how governments are formed. For their final research project, which was presented science-fair style to peers and parents, they became explorers about a topic of interest and created a product about their theme. Projects included websites, dramatic portrayals, museum exhibits, 3-D models, and film.

International development specialists Addie Ryan and Tim Hoffine spoke to World History II students about the 2011 Somalia famine as part of the students' exploration of contemporary global issues. Small groups brainstormed responses to the famine at various levels and, after sharing their thoughts, learned from the guests what had actually been done to address the famine. Addie Ryan is a Project Associate at Development Alternatives Incorporated and Tim Hoffine is an Operations Coordinator at Famine Early Warning Systems Network.

Environmental Science students spend three days at the Chesapeake Bay engaged in a variety of activities such as oyster dredging, looking for treasure, marsh mucking, crabbing, and learning about the importance of energy and water conservation and how to lesson our impact on the Bay.

Using sketches and unifix cubes, 7th graders find patterns to solve the following math problem: There are 10 frogs lined up on 10 lily pads to the left. There are 10 frogs line up on lily pads to the right. There is one empty lilypad between the two groups. The two groups need to swap places, but they are only allowed to move forward in two ways. A frog may jump over a frog next to it and a frog may move onto an empty lily pad in front of it. Write a rule to find the number of moves needed to move any number of frogs.

Middle School parents were treated to a walking tour of their students' cross-curricular J-Term projects. Students studied the nature of change in literature, history, science, math, and writing and created research-based projects—from miniature museum exhibits and video presentations to newspaper articles and brochures—on a topic that interested them.

Both the Girls Basketball team and Boys Varsity were victorious on Friday against Kingsbury Day School. Students, parents, and faculty attending the game put new meaning into home court advantage as Cougar spirit soared. The Varsity Boys Basketball team played their season opener against Kingsbury. The game started off well as the Cougars jumped out to an early lead, but Kingsbury proved too much to handle, besting the Cougars 62-42. Nevertheless, Coach Brown was encouraged by the resolve the players showed, with only two practices to prepare, and is confident the team has a strong foundation to build upon.

The Middle School held its first advisory challenge of the year, the Oreo Cookie Challenge. Advisory challenges are a fun quarterly activity that promote team building and school spirit. Samer A. won first place and posted a record time (though no records are actually kept), and Reed B. was not far behind in second place. Samer won all of the remaining Oreos for Ms. Hanson's advisory.

Congratulations to the C/A Cougars on their shut-out victory (8–0) against the Kingsbury Day School. Kingsbury didn't have a full roster, so both schools played with eight-member teams. Our Cougars showed passion, poise, and great sportsmanship as they played hard to earn their first victory. Four different players scored goals during the game, displaying great teamwork, and the defense was excellent.
