lee identifying the inverted triangle as “father” during her perception test and then the movie continuing to use the inverted triangle as a motif for evil and Longlegs making the dads kill their family…

Longlegs (2024) directed by Oz Perkins
Minor Spoilers for Longlegs (2024)
so ive seen some discourse on whether Nic Cage's character in the horror movie Longlegs counts as a transmisogynistic caricature or not, and i thought id give my two-cents
so as of typing this i, a transfem person, just saw the movie with a friend who is also transfem, and we came to similar conclusions
during the opening scene where we see the first glimpse of Cage's character, we both independently felt a feeling of "oh god please dont let this character be another transwomen/crossdresser serial killer"
i think its the way the character is framed where we only see a glimpse of him, his appearance, and the fact that Cage is doing a more higher pitched voice than normal
luckily when we're finally shown more of the character, it becomes clear that he's supposed to be a washed up glam rock type, emulating both glam rock celebrities and 60s serial killers
now just because a character isnt canonically queer/trans doesn't mean they cant be an offensive caricature, but i think that Longlegs sidesteps that problem by giving him that specific aesthetic and never calling attention to his appearance, however thats only my opinion
i do think its unfair to say that anyone who does think this character is a caricature is dumb or has poor media analysis, because making horror villains crossdressers or transwomen is a very old and harmful trope that a lot of queer people are a little traumatized from, myself included, and it is not an unreasonable thing to be worried about
idk thats just me tho
one of the things I really like about longlegs is that it does the “characters in a horror movie can’t spot the obvious implications for themselves in the narrative” VERY purposefully like from the moment you hear ruby has a birthday coming up the ending is locked in and all the pieces are there for agent carter and lee to put together but they CAN’T see themselves in the story because the point is that the violent potential of the family must remain hidden. from carter’s perspective he could never be a part of the case because the crime of family annihilation is foreign to the unit he has created and he can’t believe lee’s theory that longlegs could be working with an accomplice because the evil must be located in the bogeyman himself, not anyone he would willingly let into his home. and lee could never be part of the case because her entire life has been crafted so that she cannot recognize her role in it down to the door in her own house. the thing that’s lurking isn’t a cypher to be solved it’s the stories your family isn’t allowed to talk about
let me innn nowwwww and it can be nicee make mee go now and I'll have to come backkkk not once not twiceee but as many times as I likeeee
Broke: longlegs is good because it successfully curates its atmosphere using a consistent aesthetic in an interesting way Woke: longlegs is bad because it fails to follow up on the potentially interesting threads it initially introduces in a satisfying way, and in general is not scary Bespoke: longlegs is good because I like t-rex :)
