holy shit i never realized just how much the third trial solidifies nagito and hajime’s weird bond. it’s the first trial where he and nagito are 100% on each other’s side. like not only does nagito prove hajime’s innocence within the first five minutes of the trial as the main witness, but when hajime accuses mikan, nagito is the only one that decides to help drill it in right away. everyone else either argues that is impossible or (like chiaki) they stay silent while nagito is right there with hajime refusing to back down. i love it sm (❍ᴥ❍ʋ)
love to see it. this is why it's annoying when people say that hajime and nagito are the most incompatible people ever. like, no? their relationship could not have the potential to get to a romantic place but at least platonically these dudes can slap everyones shit with their bond.

Like, one of the things that drive me crazy about Kazuichi Souda is the fact that one of his main traits is that he is so cowardly. But even past that, he’s actually really brave too. Especially when he cares.
Honestly, Kazuichi should be given credit where credit is due. He's braver than he knows, being the first one to take initiative against Nagito (whether you think him punching him and tying him up was right or not, he still tried to do something), not being afraid to cry openly at his friend's deaths, standing up to Fuyuhiko when his dick switch is on in Chapter 2 and then running to protect Fuyuhiko and demand for Monokuma to do something when Fuyuhiko's survived Peko's execution.
Like Kazuichi can be strong. It's his trust issues and hesitancy that holds him back. He’s so damn scared of putting his trust into someone only for them to misuse it and hurt him. It’s so easy for him to get attached to Hajime and some of the others, to be playful and even affectionate, but to pull back and withdraw as soon as shit gets real.
There’s just something so raw about his arc as a character. The desire to want to be with people and to be liked, but then be too scared to really give them your heart and your true self for fear that they’re just gonna step all over it.
That's why I love the ending of Chapter 6 in the second game so much. After the Izuru stuff is solved and everyone bands with Hinata to wait for their friends with the NWP ending around them, Kazuichi takes the chance to tell not just Hinata but everyone that he's genuinely scared. It's a small thing, but it's really there to show that he's open to being vulnerable with them all when he just put his trust in them.

Honestly where do I start? The movement? The composition? The lighting?
Look how much more it seems like she's leaning forward because the tree and the man curve away and around her? Like Tantalos who reached for fruit but the tree would bend away from him? That's what this feels like. And then there are these other two, pulling her away into the opposite direction. So there's a lot of movement! But what makes it even better is how he still stabilized the image with a lot of hidden vertical lines!
Also the contrasts? Fantastic! Like the one between the metal of his armor and her flowly dress or her light face vs the other faces kept in darkness or the light foreground vs the dark background,...
Also the edges are amazing! Everyone tells you corners are not important but here? Wrong! Her foot is like an anchor that stop the eye from falling out of the image so it's a lot more rendered than the flower petals.
And don't even get me started on the rendering...

The reason why it doesn't look like they're senselessly pulling at her? Because the action is actually built up like a spiral, whoa! There's a lot going on behind her back, but because of the spiral your eyes don't linger there and instead are lead towards her body and then towards her head.
It's not just the spiral, though, there's another line of movement hidden in those hands:
And not only that, they're grouped together in the shape of a pentagon! Simple shapes are easy to recognize, so it tells your eye where to go immediately.

like man i’m glad we’re finally talking about it but you guys have to be at least, like, slightly fucking aware of imperialism and nationalism in japanese media, especially anime. if you can understand that a country’s past can influence its media in the USA why cant you fucking see that elsewhere. the scars of imperial japan’s actions haven’t magically vanished now that its not the 20th century - the colonial legacy is real and alive and its impacts persist. ppls families still to this day refuse to buy anything japanese. anti-korean sentiment in japan is still very much around and dangerous. the survivors of japans actions in the pacific are still alive, and so are their descendants. i am just begging you to use your brains when consuming media and maybe do 5 seconds of googling about unit 731, nanjing, comfort women, and what the flag of the rising sun means to people.
korean immigrant here to add some anecdotal stuff about the effects of colonial rule: my grandmother was born in the 30s and lived through the occupation (which started in the 10s, and politically korea was under japanese influence even before then). she uses japanese words and pronunciations for everyday items even today because that’s how she grew up (e.g. sodenashi for sleeveless tops, ba-te-ri/바테리 instead of 배터리 for battery). she’s still alive today. my parents who were born in the 50s use similar language (e.g. using nashi instead of the full sodenashi) because they grew up in that cultural aftermath. 2-3 generations isn’t enough to erase this kind of trauma. at least linguistically, the colonial effects are still alive and well. and i know at the beginning of the 00s there was still a very strong ‘don’t buy japanese’ sentiment among adults, though children did consume japanese-origin media (i.e. pokemon). it’s a complex situation because we’re neighbouring countries.
to people who aren’t korean, especially white americans: we know this kind of thing doesn’t matter to you, personally. but the way you look at japan as a descendant of a country that was on the side of victory against it, versus the way we might look at japan, is very different. the rising sun flag might just be a particularly japanese motif to you, but to us it’s the literal symbol of war crimes committed against us. if someone points out that you’re idealizing or perpetuating imperialist versions of events or symbols, please listen to them. thanks
taiwanese american here. my grandparents grew up under the occupation. i didn’t find out until i was in high school that my grandma was fluent in japanese, she just didn’t want to speak it again until after the war, and yet in taiwanese mandarin we still have a lot of loan words left from japan. some benshengren even speak japanese as natively as hokkien. our school systems changed because of them. when i started expressing interest in japan as a kid because i started watching anime, my dad sat me down and talked about their war crimes the best he could to a child, and even then i didn’t learn the full depth of unit 731 and comfort women until my teens.
i see a lot of you western anime fans, especially white people, calling out homophobia and sexism in anime, even when you didn’t have the full nuance to understand if what you were saying was actually accurate. (remember when yall accused when marnie was there of queerbaiting lol.) you LOVE criticizing things from a western framework, but ALWAYS shove japanese fascism and racism to the backburner. a lot of anime you enjoy explicitly shows anti chinese, anti korean, anti se asian racism in some way, yet when we bring it up you say “oh it’s ok to enjoy problematic things!” why is this history of murder, violence, slavery, and fascism just something “problematic” but you’ll make a 50 page post about queerbaiting and sexism in anime while excluding lgbt+ japanese people or other asians how they feel about the topic?
i know you were all raised to view everything strictly with a western lens, i mean even i’m affected by it and my parents are literally asian immigrants who raised me on asian media, but just because you didn’t grow up knowing about this history doesn’t make it trivial. and stop telling e/se asians affected by japanese imperialism to suck it up
2nd gen Korean American here
My grandfather was forced into the Japanese imperial army when they took over what is now N Korea. Him and his best friend ran away in the middle of winter with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Their entire families were left behind. The effects of Japanese imperialism are still felt to this day. Part of my lineage is forever lost to N Korea and we don’t even know if they survived the wars. The despair and pain in my Korean American community is still prevalent. We teach our children to avoid doing anything Japanese and work hard to make sure our culture survives. (KA’s imo suffer from a purity/we are the best complex and treat mixed kids like me like trash but that’s a whole nother convo)
I’ve worked hard to not let my bias affect my relationships with Japanese Americans… but Japan (govt) refuses to acknowledge the atrocities they committed or apologize. They don’t teach it in school. Now Japan is full of nationalists who harass children going to Korean classes or school to learn Korean. Westerners constantly praising Japan without being conscientious or critical of what they consume is not a win for most of E/SE Asians.

Xenophobia, superiority and racism is still very much alive in Japan. I’ve sat through their classes. I’ve read their history books. They don’t ever mention what they’ve done. There are no pictures, discussions or insinuations that they’ve done anything wrong, because much of their impirial mindset is still alive- thanks in no small part due to the fact that they were never held accountable for their actions and the government was never forced to change. Politicians and public figures who express sympathy or acknowledgement are silenced. Restaurant patrons express disgust at being helped by a Taiwanese server. Light skinned children (of any race) are praised as “cute” or “beautiful” while darker skinned children are ignored. People will complain about the low birth rate and the disastrous effects that will inevitably cause in one breath, then laugh at the idea of encouraging immigration the next. The level of sheer arrogance is astounding for a culture that puts so much focus on humility.
Japan, like every other place on earth, has both a good and bad side. That’s what it means to be human. Enjoying their media is ok, but living in willful ignorance of their atrocities is not.
