April 2025 German Goals

So this month is going to be complete and utter chaos—I have never been so busy in my life. German goals are staying simple.

Do Anki at least 15 days

Input all new vocab into my S25 deck

Do my German homework (or at least the readings)

Watch Too Hot to Handle with friends

March 2025 Language Goals Reflection

25.5 hours this month! I believe that's an all-time record!

So a decent month for Anki, although didn't forge ahead much on the A2 deck. I'm only about 70 cards behind on S25 but I do have a vocab quiz on Friday so that's why it gets a partial lol.

Immersion

Finish season 1 of Die Kaiserin [4.5 episodes]

Do something outside of class with deutschsprachige friends, either movie night or study session

Didn't even touch Die Kaiserin, but I've been watching other German stuff—mostly reality TV. The department started hosting Drag Race Germany watch parties, and my friends and I are starting Too Hot to Handle season 2.

So this was a pretty good month, considering I didn't touch the language for all of spring break. A mixed bag in class: bombed a vocab quiz on stupid errors (mixed up the preterite and perfect multiple times, guh) but the last few readings we've done have gone really well.

I just saw a response to a lovely original post about making humane arguments against the use of genAI as a substitute for academic work that said (inter alia):

"can we please stop legitimizing idea that either most people who are in school are there to learn or that they should be coerced into [learning] if they're not?"

Great Caesar's ghost. Stop "legitimizing" the idea that the university is *checks notes* an academic institution? An institution of *checks notes again* higher education? The purpose of which is to *checks notes yet again* help students learn? I say again: great Caesar's ghost. Counterpoint: Stop ceding the corporate takeover of the university! Stop ceding the commodification of education! Stop viewing education as a product/commodity rather than a process!

Not a great month for immersion, I started Die Kaiserin but only watched an episode and a half. I'm quite busy this semester, so when I fall into bed at the end of the night I want to catch up on English-language YouTube instead of reaching for German immersion. (however, when I had more time, it's not like I was doing a lot of immersion anyways...)
