lemme try and explain some of my human!au....

it’s based off of heritages railways and counts sodor as being one gigantic ‘living history’ community. they are also very safety conscious and you’ll see signs that say “safety first!” pretty much everywhere.

there’s considerably a lesser amount of locomotives on the island. for example, bill and ben don’t have two engines, they only have one. and not every engine is used each day. some engines, like the number 4 engine, get used everyday for for the job they are synonymous with. the number 4 engine is almost always used for the express train. others, like the number 6 or number 2 engine, don’t always get used. if the number 1 engine is already running then that one will be used for the mail train.

the characters work in crews and who the crew is can change from day to day. some trains, like the mail train or the express, will have a regular crew. each character has a favorite locomotive to work with and yes, it corresponds with their locomotive counterparts.

they also have a standard uniform to wear when they are working. it’s the same blue jacket that you see the crew members wearing in the tv show. now that doesn’t mean they don’t have favorite or regular colors, they just can’t wear regular clothes to work.

but there is a chance james is wearing underwear that’s red colored because red is his favorite color and there’s no way in hell he’s going anywhere without a bit of red to sport.
