Carter frowned slightly. “Adam’s gone? Where did he go? Is he coming back?” She didn’t like the thought of Adam just up and leaving somewhere without telling Conley. If her baby was unhappy, she was unhappy. And she wouldn’t stand for Adam making Conley unhappy.

I guess you could say that. No one ever hit me, but that wouldn’t be a surprise if they did. My whole family called me stupid and wanted me to get married to some wealthy guy. But I didn’t want that, not at all.

Carter was ecstatic to see Conley again. She’d really missed her boy. It felt like forever since she’d seen his smiling face. So when he responded happily to her suggestion of getting ice cream, she was very pleased.

She took his hand as they walked toward the ice cream shop, giving it a gentle squeeze after a moment. “So what have you been up to in the forest?” she asked curiously.

"i've been with the birds" he smiled "Adam's been gone, and I wanted to feel happy." he told her "not that you don't make me happy" he quickly said, "I just really miss him, and the birds and other animals help with that"
