How can we help victims?
There are lots of ways to help, including supporting victims, advocating for policy changes, and educating the public about consent and healthy relationships.
Money alone cannot fix the problem of sexual assault, but it is needed to fund support services for victims. Raising awareness about sexual assault and consent is needed in order to help reduce future incidents and increase support for victims.
Politicians can also play an important role in addressing sexual assault and consent by creating policies and laws that protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable. They can also use their platforms to raise awareness and advocate for change
People with disabilities and their experiences with sexual assault.
People with disabilities are also at higher risk of sexual assault. People with a disability were almost twice as likely to have experienced sexual assault in the last 12 months than people without a disability. This is most likely because the perpetrator sees the victim as vulnerable or unable to defend themselves or report the abuse because of their condition.
Can the environment impact sexual assault?
Environmental factors can contribute to the risk of sexual assault, mostly in cases where individuals are additionally vulnerable due to stress and trauma.

- In the year ending June 2020, there were 18,538 sexual assault victims recorded by police in Australia.
- Approximately 90% of reported sexual assault victims in Australia are female.

What role does race play in sexual assault?
Prejudice and beliefs can play a role in sexual assault, mostly when the perpetrator has misogynistic or racist ideologies. These ideas can come from media, culture, and personal experiences.
Sexual assault affects individuals of all races and ethnicities, but rates of victimisation are higher for certain groups. For example, Indigenous women in the United States and Canada are at a higher risk of sexual assault than women from other racial or ethnic groups.

What are some of the impacts of sexual assault?
Sexual assault can make daily life difficult, including socialising, future relationships and self worth.
It can also have social impact, if it is reported, or gets out that something happened, whether it’s portrayed by the victim as an assault or by the attacker as the victim being easy.
This can have long lasting mental and social effects, as well as physical effects, it can destroy a person’s body and leave them with traumatising permanent damage and scarring.

Sexual assault can happen to people of any age:
- Children and young people are at particular risk of sexual assault. 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 13 boys experience sexual abuse before the age of 18.
- In Australia, the highest rate of sexual assault occurs among young people aged 15-19 years, with 1 in 5 women and 1 in 22 men reporting sexual assault since the age of 15.
- In the United States, more than half of all reported sexual assault victims are under the age of 18.
- Elderly individuals can also be at risk of sexual assault. Approximately 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men over the age of 60 have experienced some form of abuse.
And all of this was just what has been reported.
93% of reported juvenile victims knew the perpetrator. 59% were acquaintances. 34% were family members. 7% were strangers to the victim.
Reporting a sexual assault is difficult, and traumatising, so many assaults go unheard of, thats why we need to do our part to raise awareness, and support those around us!
Is sexual assault common? Yes!
23% of women (2.2 million) and 8% of men (718,000) over 18 years of age experienced sexual violence, including sexual assault or child sexual abuse, In Australia, in 2022.
According to the survey, of the 639,000 women who experienced sexual assault by a male perpetrator in the 10 years prior to survey:
only 13% reported to police
the most common perpetrator of sexual assault was their intimate partner.
While its difficult to estimate the exact number of people impacted by sexual assault, as many cases go unreported, the statistics are:
- one in three women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
- In the United States, an estimated one in three women and one in six men will experience sexual violence at some point in their lives.
- In Australia, one in six women and one in 16 men have experienced sexual assault since the age of 15.
- In Canada, approximately one in three women and one in six men experience sexual assault in their lifetime.
- In the United Kingdom, an estimated 20% of women and 4% of men have experienced some form of sexual assault since the age of 16.
What does consent look like?
Enthusiastic consent can look like this;
Periodically checking in with your partner, such as asking “Is this still okay?” Providing positive feedback when you're comfortable with an activity. Explicitly agreeing to certain activities, either by saying “yes” or another affirmative statement, like “I'm open to trying.”
Consent does not look like this;
Refusing to acknowledge “no”.
A partner who is disengaged, non-responsive, or visibly upset.
Assuming that wearing certain clothes, flirting, or kissing is an invitation for anything more.
Someone being under the legal age of consent, as defined by the state.
Someone being incapacitated because of drugs or alcohol Pressuring someone into sexual activity by using fear or intimidation.
Assuming you have permission to engage in a sexual act because you’ve done it in the past.
