“When a robber held a gun to somebody’s head and said, ‘I hope you will give me your wallet,’ the word hope was not the most operative word at that moment.” — Kamala Harris (James Lankford had characterized Trump’s “I hope you can let this go” interaction with Comey as a “light touch”)
So the election is tomorrow and here’s a couple of reminders for those who haven’t voted before/aren’t sure what to do:
- Polling hours are between 7 and 10. This means your vote must be in by 10 before the boxes get sealed ready to count. Don’t decide to go and vote at 9:30, you may be turned away if you’re not in the station by 10.
- Keep your vote simple with a single cross in the box for the candidate you want to vote for. Technically, anything goes, but there will be party members at the count querying every vote and you could end up having your vote counted as another party if you go outside the lines.
- don’t take a selfie of you with your ballot paper or try and take a photo inside the polling station. Your vote could be invalidated and you could be removed from the station. Taking a photo invalidates the secret ballot which is written into our voting laws (rotp acts).
- you do not have to give anyone your polling card or any personal information . If anyone asks for information like this outside the doors, you do not have to give it to them. These people will use that info to try and persuade you to change your mind or chase you up later, and possibly for other elections too. Only speak to the poll clerks.
- Go out and vote. We are lucky to have a right to vote, go out and use it. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know who to vote for, or if you spoil your paper in protest, you have the right to do that, so go and do it. Do it for all those men and women who fought for the right to vote, and the men and women still fighting.
