Reflection

I really enjoyed Studio 1 this semester because we spent the whole 12 weeks focusing on the one assignment. It gave me the time to thoroughly research and plan for my final poster design and I didn’t feel rushed to present a final product. I really had fun with this project and am glad I chose to do a fun, energetic and childlike festival. It really challenged me as I am used to designing for an older audience, and not so much for children. 

I found it interesting in the way we brainstormed our festival in different stages. One week we researched existing festivals, the other week we focused on our brand personality and then the week after that we focused on brand identity etc. I feel like breaking this project up in stages, really helped me to understand what my festival was about, and therefore, helped me to develop a poster that demonstrated exactly what I had envisioned. 

Overall, Studio 1 was one of my favourite classes for the year. I really enjoyed working together as a group and feel like I bonded a lot with the other students.

NOSHTALGIA - FINAL PROJECT

ON THE GO VIETNAM

Growing up as a Vietnamese-Australian, I have always felt a strong connection to Vietnamese food culture despite never physically being there. This is much because of the Vietnamese food that my mum still cooks at home as well as the multicultural and fusion food culture I have experienced growing up in Melbourne.

In my final project, I have put a contemporary take to presenting the traditional flavours of Vietnam through a travel pack of uniquely Vietnamese garnishes and seasonings. For me, as much as these ingredients symbolise the tastes that remind me of Vietnam, the whole essence of Vietnamese culture within Melbourne is in the experience itself of being able to experiment and use these flavours in new and exciting ways in other food. 

The pack includes a handprinted banana leaf pouch which I feel really provides that crafty, authentic aesthetic that I feel characterises Vietnam. It holds the three condiments in bottles which I ultimately decided to keep simple to embrace the makeshift and homemade feel of the bottles. They are complimented with a description sheet on tracing paper as well as a swing tag. The packaging really does have quite a few layers to it, and this is because I feel that is how things are packaged in my culture - with much care and wrapping to secure all the good food!

Studio 1 Final Event

Studio 1 Final Event

In week 13, the whole cohort came together to celebrate Studio 1 Core Class. Luckily it was a nice sunny day, and there was a great buzz throughout the day! We got to enjoy some delicious cold soft serve ice cream whilst we wandered around to look at everyones projects. It was really interesting to see what the other students had been up to in their classes, and I really enjoyed the different forms each project was presented in. 

Here is a boomerang of me with the Instagram Frame and props that me and my group made. I was really happy with how they turned out, and am glad that everything came together in the end!

Essentials 3 - Project Production

I found this class the easiest compared to the other Essentials, because we weren’t required to do a lot.

This class was all about designing a schedule that would clearly demonstrate the production process of 5 different applications. The applications I chose were Uniform, Signage, Packaging, Flyers and a Website. 

I did find it quite difficult trying to come up with a method that could clearly show all 5 of my applications on the one page. I ended up going with the method I used above, using different colour codes to represent a part of the process. 

The greatest insight I gained from this class is that there are many methods of developing a schedule, and each person has their own interpretations. It’s just a matter of choosing a method that you think would be best for a client to read and understand.

Week 12 Lecture

This week's lecture began with an incursion by Tania Ivanka, who shared her research on Permaculture, Systems Design, and CoDesign. She discussed how this multilayered design research, and the social, and environmental topics at its centre, fit into her Studio options like Zoo Poo and Blood. Following Tania’s incursion, Andy quickly ran through the semester’s many topics, including Materiality and Surface, Form and Function, Pretty and Ugly Design, Appropriation, Copyright and Creative Commons, Design Ethics, Crafts, Strategies and finally, Design Futures.

Studio 1 Core - Final Project

For my final poster design, I ended up changing the colour of the splatter to an orange, to make it look less ‘slimy.’ I feel like this really helps to make my poster stand out more as it creates a nice contrast with the green. I also fixed the logo by adding a bubble shape, between the “jello” and the “fest.” This hid the gap and stopped it from being the focal point of the poster. 

For my second application, I chose to design a T-shirt that people could purchase as memorabilia. I chose the colours green, yellow and orange as they are generic colours and can appeal to both men and women.

Studio 1 Core

This was my first draft of my festival poster. After getting some feedback, we came to the conclusion that there was too much green and yellow and that another colour needed to be added to create contrast. We also discussed how there was too much of a gap in the middle of the logo and that I had to fill it up somehow.

Overall, I was happy with where my poster was heading, and just needed to make some minor changes to make it stand out more!

Week 9; Open Design & Creative Commons

In this week’s lecture, Andy talked about the use of “open” design and how we are able to use them as long as we comply with the artist’s policy. A platform that provides proper attribution and license services is Creative Commons. Personally, I am quite familiar with the platform already as I’ve used it in the past for my personal works. But here were some of the types of attribution that Andy showed us:

Attribution CC BY: This is the golden child of CC. It lets you tweak, remix, and distribute even for commercial use, so long as there is attribution.

Attribution-ShareAlike CC BY-SA: As long as you credit the original poster and license it under identical terms if you have made modifications, you are good to go. Wikipedia uses this form.

Attribution-NoDerivs CC BY-ND: This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and with proper attribution.

Attribution-NonCommercial CC BY-NC: You can tweak, modify and distribute as long as it is done non-commercially.

Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike CC BY-NC-SA: This license lets you remix, tweak, and build upon the original work non-commercially, as long as you license your new creation under identical terms and credit them.

WEEK EIGHT // LECTURE //

Food, consumer culture and design. Todays morning lecture was intriguing and thought provoking for me. We got shown art and design pieces of which explore the world’s excessive consumer culture, destructive and addictive in its habit.

We got shown examples of work exploring aspects of this topic from students of the National Taiwan University of Arts, Duane Hanson, Andreas Gursky and Thomas Hirschhorn to mention a few. 

These examples made me really think about the effects of pollution and consumerism but also the ways it can be explored in really different designs. 

Andreas Gursky’s work uses an elevated heights point, allowing viewers to see the whole scene and take it in getting a ‘broader picture’ and understanding of what is being stated through the work. In a kind of similar way Hirschhorn uses confrontation to depict the damage consumerisms excessive culture is having on the environment and communities, by dumping truckloads of cans and rubbish into a gallery. Hirschhorn similarly shocks the audience as a way of provoking through in viewers about their actions regarding consumerism and in specifics disposal of packaging.

Studio 1 Core - Week 8

In this class we were split into two groups and did a quick 5 minute brainstorm on sticky notes, of some ideas of how to present our final posters. I really enjoyed this task and it was quite interesting to see the many different ideas we could come up with in such a small amount of time. Once we collected everyones ideas, we then categorised each of them, and then cut down on the ones we thought were achievable. 

After many discussions, we decided it would be a cool idea to post our posters on an Instagram account. Everyone happily agreed on this idea as it was easy for everyone to do and it also meant it would save us money from printing.

Essentials 2 - Project Management

Our final task for this Essentials was to develop a Ghant Chart and budget. The ghant chart was a bit challenging for me as I found it difficult to create on Excel. It took a few go’s to get it exactly how I wanted, but I got there eventually in the end.

The budget was also challenging as I have never dealt with a client before, and therefore do not know how much to charge someone for a project like this. But I gave it my best shot!

Sudio 1 Core 

To begin developing my poster i decided it would be easiest if I drew the logo out before drawing it out on illustrator. At first I tried developing it in photoshop, using a technique that I had used before, however I couldn’t create the highlights that I wanted. So I transferred my design to Illustrator and began layering the type with many gradients. I was quite happy with the final product as I was able to produce the glow that I wanted. 

To create a more “bubble” effect, I decided to put an outline around the logo. I feel like this brought both the “Jello” and the “Fest” together and made it look like one logo.

Essentials 2 - Project Management

Our next task for this class was to pick our deliverables and assess the success criteria for each. We had to consider the risks, constraints and assumptions for each one, so we were aware of any challenges we could face in the process. Its important that we consider all possibilities in a design process, so the final product is a success. If we don’t, then we are setting ourselves up for failure!

Studio 1

Here are the rough drawings for my 3 Poster designs. 

For my first concept, my idea was to have a large cartoon jello character with the logo on top, however I felt like they would clash as they would both compete as the hero image.

My second concept is the closest to my final design. I thought a splatter would be a cool way to demonstrate the messiness and fun vibe of the festival.

For my third concept, my idea was to have three jello characters, to represent the different people and age groups that would attend the festival.

Week 7 Lecture - Designing experiences or experiencing design?

In this week’s lecture we discussed experience design in relation to food. He showed us some examples of how the experience of consuming food with others can be a very valuable and memorable experience.

One of the examples that stood out to me was Damien Hirst’s Pharmacy restaurant. 

Images of tablets and brightly coloured pills have been embroidered onto leather banquettes and embedded into the marble floor. Bar stools are topped with pastel-coloured pill-shaped seats.

A neon prescriptions sign hangs above the bar, along with a series of sculptures based on molecular structures.
