"Peter dearest, are you here, sweet child?" she called, she was wary of the cold dark abandoned hospital hallway. somehow it was even less friendly at night.

"it's Miss Margo, where are you sweet child?"

He pokes his head out of a door, warm light illuminating the hallway as he looks around for her. He grins brightly when he spots the older woman.

“Hi Ms Margo!” He calls out, “cmon in before someone catches you!”

"oh sweet peter how are you darling?" she asked, immediately taking his head in her hands to look him over. "are you feeling well, do you need anything my dear?"

He smiles up at her, a bit embarrassed by the state of himself. His hair was greasy and slightly matted, his clothes were rumpled, and he was sure he smelt like teenage boy and axe body spray.

Margo gave him a sad lopsided smile.

"sweet boy, how long has it been since you have bathed?" she asked him softly. she took him in a hug, not really caring how gross he smelled.

she was an ER doctor, she had seen and smelled worse.

"how about i bring you to my home tonight darling, i cannot in good faith allow you to sleep here tonight. i have a warm soft bed and a nice bathroom and i will make you breakfast in the morning, how about that, my dear?"

Peters smile wobbled just a bit, he hadn’t realized it had been that long since his last shower. He had been too caught up in making sure he had a place to stay.

“I don’t want to put you or your partner out, I’m sure you don’t want to deal with a kid in your house” he says shyly as he looks up at her

Peter nods and begins to patter around the room, he gathered up his few things into his backpack. He pauses at the threadbare blanket, he had it for years. Peter wrapped it up tightly and shoved it in his bag. However, this meant he had to take his textbook out. He held onto the quantum mechanics book and grabbed his small cooler bag, throwing the backpack onto his bag. It was weird, how his entire life was able to fit into a ratty backpack and a plastic cooler bag he got from a dumpster. "I-are you sure?" He asks one more time

"sweet child i am quite certain." she nodded, offering out her hand to hold his things and to gather the gifted items she had given him earlier.

"a young man needs somewhere stable to be, and i am willing and able to provide that," she explained, "plus my air conditioning is much better than the torturous garbage of this wretched place."

"come now young one, let's get you to the car, do you have any clothes to change into once you are finished with your bathing? i can wash your things and lend you some clean items while they are washed."

"i swear to with my whole heart that i am not taking your things, i am simply offering help to carry them. you will get your things back, its just an awful lot for a tired young man to carry,"

He was a bit confused, she was so well-spoken, so easily kind to him. He wondered if she was real, or if his way of life finally caught up to him and now this was an angel coming to take him away.

her heart ached for the teary-eyed teen. she pulled a neatly folded tissue out of her pocket and dabbed at the young man's cheeks, wiping off a smudge of dirt along with his tears.

all she could see was herself. twelve, running from demented fosters, hiding in the back room of a perfume shop to escape the bitter cold winter nights. holding onto her stuffed unicorn and backpack that was still splashed with her mother's blood. it hurt, she wanted to be the light in a foster child's life. she wanted to be what her foster-grandmother had been to her. taking her in on the harshest of nights and filling her with warm soup and wrapping her in fresh blankets. and she was determined to do the same to Peter.

"now, when you are ready, my car is in the parkade, we can go and get you to my home, and get you some time to take a breath and a rest." she explained.

"I-it's not you're fault, I'm just bad at this type of stuff" He says in response, which wasn't totally untrue, he knew he wasn't the best at social situations but especially not with adults.

Margo lead him down the stairs to the parkade, she brought him to a shiny white SUV and unlocked it, offering the passenger seat and loading his bags in the back. she handed off his backpack to him, it seemed like a comfort item of some sort.

"now, my home is not too far away, but if you would like we can stop anywhere you desire on the way," she offered, "somewhere to eat, somewhere to fetch some sleep clothes, anywhere."

"and as for your money, that is yours, and you must keep it, child. i do not require nor desire any payment." she explained to him. "now let us grab a pair similar to what you are wearing so that you may go to sleep tonight in something clean."

her heart ached for the teary-eyed teen. she pulled a neatly folded tissue out of her pocket and dabbed at the young man's cheeks, wiping off a smudge of dirt along with his tears.

all she could see was herself. twelve, running from demented fosters, hiding in the back room of a perfume shop to escape the bitter cold winter nights. holding onto her stuffed unicorn and backpack that was still splashed with her mother's blood. it hurt, she wanted to be the light in a foster child's life. she wanted to be what her foster-grandmother had been to her. taking her in on the harshest of nights and filling her with warm soup and wrapping her in fresh blankets. and she was determined to do the same to Peter.

"now, when you are ready, my car is in the parkade, we can go and get you to my home, and get you some time to take a breath and a rest." she explained.

"Peter dearest, are you here, sweet child?" she called, she was wary of the cold dark abandoned hospital hallway. somehow it was even less friendly at night.

Peter wrapped it up tightly and shoved it in his bag. However, this meant he had to take his textbook out. He held onto the quantum mechanics book and grabbed his small cooler bag, throwing the backpack onto his bag. It was weird, how his entire life was able to fit into a ratty backpack and a plastic cooler bag he got from a dumpster. "I-are you sure?" He asks one more time

Peter was sitting in his room, reading a science journal that he found at a thrift store.

Dennis knocked on the door frame to announce himself. He had a brown paper bag in his hand.

“Hey, Peter” He smiled kindly

He looks up, setting the book down, “Hi Mr Dr Whitaker!!” He says cheerfully

Dennis walked into the door and sat down in a chair next to the bed.

“I come with gifts” He laughed softly and stuck his hand into the paper bag, pulling out a sandwich and handing it to Peter.

“It has bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and ham. I got the same. Also you can just call me Dennis. I’m not working or anything”

He takes the sandwich, eating half quickly. He hadn’t realized how hungry he had been until now. He desperately wanted to eat the other half but he needed to save it.

“Be careful, I Don’t want you to choke” He recognized how Peter was eating. He could tell it’d probably been a bit since he’d eaten. Dennis made a mental note to try and bring something for Peter at least once a week.

He nods and rewraps the other half of the sandwich. He puts it into a cooler bag he bought a few weeks ago. It was good for keeping his food from going warm even just for a day.

“Sorry sir” he says once he swallows his last bite

Dennis saw himself in Peter. He used to only be allowwd to call his dad sir and he still had the habit of calling anyone older than him sir or ma’am. He hoped Peter didn’t call him sir for the same reason it was a habit for himself.

He nods quickly, “I really liked it, my aunt used to make me these type of sandwiches all the time”

“Did she live here in the city?”

He nodded, "Yeah she moved here a few years before I moved in with her, her and my uncle Ben wanted to be closer to us"

“You said she was a nurse, did she work here at PTMC?” Dennis tilted his head curiously. He much preferred listening to others talk than talking about himself or his life.

He thinks for a second, “I think for a bit? She was a NICU nurse. She loved babies” he giggles wetly, he remembered how often she’d come home and tell Peter all about the babies she helped

“Thats amazing. I had NICU in my mind for a while because i’ve always been good with helping kids. But then I did my ER rotation and loved that.” He smiled. He gently put a hand on Peters shoulder in what he hoped was a comforting way.

“Your aunt sounds like a wonderful person. What about your uncle ben? What did he do?”

He fought the urge to shake it off, to tell him that other people need help more than he does. Instead Peter leaned into the gentle touch and sighed. “The ER is crazy, I dunno how you guys do it”

“Ben was a electrician, but he did work in the military before that, that’s where him and May met actually”

“I love the crazy. It keeps me moving and— uh and I love it.” He smiled softly. He wasn’t going to vent to a 15 year old.

“Thats a sweet story. How did May meet him there? Was she a nurse then too?”

"yeah, well she was training to be a medic, but she stayed mostly on base. Ben had an accident and he was brought back to the base hospital and they met there" He says, it was a sweet story, one he had memorized long before they passed

Dennis knocked on the door frame to announce himself. He had a brown paper bag in his hand.

“It has bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and ham. I got the same. Also you can just call me Dennis. I’m not working or anything”

He takes the sandwich, eating half quickly. He hadn’t realized how hungry he had been until now. He desperately wanted to eat the other half but he needed to save it.

Dennis giggles softly and hooks his pinky around Peters. “Pinky promise.”

He grins and unwraps the other half of his sandwich

Dennis smiled and sat back in his chair. He looked over to where a book was lying on the bed. It must’ve been the one he was reading when he first showed up.

“What are you reading there?” Dennis pointed

“Oh! It’s a book on quantum mechanics” he says as he holds its up proudly. It was clearly a college textbook that had seen better days
