Hey y’all this is going to be a long one but it’s been on my mind so...
Karkat and Kanaya, to me what is so beautiful about their dynamic is how they can love eachother outside of the quadrant system. And what I mean by that is it’s not romantic at all, which for humans isn’t a ground breaking thing, but for trolls it is. Trolls as I see it don’t have friendships like this, they don’t have the human equivalent of a best friend or even sibling. At least it’s weird to have this sort of dynamic, or it’s not common just because of the nature of troll society.
Maybe the entire point of Kanaya and Karkat is to show how much trolls would’ve prospered if not for the tyrannical leadership and violent nature of their society. How without the influence of people like doc scratch they could’ve been so much more.
Part of this is what makes Kanaya and Karkat so wonderful! But boiling it down to moirails takes away some of the impact i think we were supposed to get from them. I feel like a lot of people forget moirails are supposed to be a romantic thing, it’s not /just/ besties. They are explicitly stated as being romantic, more akin to soulmates if we have to give an equivalent.
Not to mention the fact that Kanaya is an ‘undeniably gay character’ as per the wise words of the Huss. Putting a character like this, who is a cannon lesbian, into a romantic quadrant with a man is erasure at best. If you still want to argue on that, why are you so eager to ship a man with her anyway. We get so little good representation without fandoms erasing lesbian identities.
Anyway Karkat and Kanaya are wonderful as best friends, not as moirails, because to ship them would be to water down all they are!
