I came across this post and wanted to share because it’s important to me to know that the white friends in my “orbit” are precisely aware the range of ways there are to champion TRUE change and utilize this increased “conversation” surrounding racism to effect movement and not simply reinforce the status quo. It is INCORRECT to assume you need only be having discourse about the issue of racism. You must also be active in challenging your friends, family and co-workers(regardless of whether you think of them or yourself as “allies”) as to what you are literally doing about it. What are YOU doing about it? What do your conversations about race sound like? How do they make you feel? How often are they happening? How many people of color do you speak to about issues of race for their input or POV? How many people of color are on your ZOOM calls? Have you or anyone else brought up RACE, or the lack thereof? How has it been addressed? How are YOUR friends having conversations about race? Are they even having conversations about race that aren’t solely focused on “how bad things are” but ending, instead, with actionable steps towards ending racism and race bias on a daily basis? I don’t hear the conversation about race even within my own friend group and that concerns me. So I’m speaking up… It is not enough to end these conversations with “I feel so bad” or “things are awful” or “I can’t believe things are like this.” Your black and brown friends do not need anymore generalized apathy, “thoughts and prayers” or performative activism from a community of people who are entirely empowered to change the environment by challenging any and every space they walk into that’s all or mostly white. https://www.instagram.com/p/CKztoYXhtt_/?igshid=1o7g35382jouz

flamingos flying over tanzania’s lake natron, a salt lake which is home to three quarters of the world’s three million lesser flamingos, as well as toxic multicoloured extremophile cyanobacteria that thrive in water so hypersaline it would strip away human skin. for the flamingos, however, the tough skin and scales on their legs prevents burning, leaving them uniquely free to drink from the near boiling freshwater found from springs and geysers at the lake’s edges.  (x, x, x, x, x)
