RIP to a legend, Bra Hugh Masekela, SA’s “Father of Jazz,” activist, and musician 🙏🏿🙏🏾🙏🏽🙏🏼🇿🇦. (Pic and words from Sal Masekela) 

Born in KwaGuqa township, east of Pretoria in Mpumalanga, Masekela picked up his first trumpet when he was 14 years old. It was anti-apartheid activist, Trevor Huddleston, who gave Masekela this instrument, sent to him from Louis Armstrong himself.

Masekela’s music — like “Soweto Blues” and “Bring Him Back Home” — reflected the oppression, as well as joy and passion, of his fellow South Africans. Through his art, he protested apartheid and the daily hardships of those affected by this systemic racism.
