Pulling the helmet from his head, Pietro ran a hand through his hair, sighing heavily. He loved his job-he did. Working for SHIELD was more than he could hope for. And once things with his undercover assignment settled down, his life was back to a sense of normalcy. But nothing would ever beat coming home.
Thankfully, he managed to negotiate with one of the other agents to cover his shift tomorrow, so even though he couldn’t spend today with his husband, he could at least spend the next. Tucking his helmet under his arm, he made his way through the front door, hearing the familiar sound of paws against the floor. No sooner did he set the helmet to the side did Luna and Star come around the corner, tails wagging when they saw him.
“Hey girls!” Kneeling down, he scratched behind their ears as they performed their usual ‘sniff check’, Luna hopping up to lick the side of Pietro’s face. “Look at these bows–don’t you two look pretty? Did dad do that? Huh? Where is he?” The quiet clatter that came from the kitchen answered his question, Pietro pulling a single rose from the bag he carried in. Tthe speedster gave each dog a pat on the head before darting into the kitchen. Standing beside his husband, he rest his hands on Cole’s shoulders, pressing a kiss to the other’s cheek. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Seacrest.” Grinning, he took a step back, holding out the rose. “It’s a touch cheesy–but I couldn’t help it.” Blue eyes looked around the kitchen. “Everything looks amazing, per usual. I think Luna want to eat her bow, though.” He fought the urge to eat one of the strawberries now. His gaze settled on the covered doorway, a brow arching slightly. “Are we redecorating?” He asked, turning to face Cole.
Cole stuck his fingertip inside his mouth just as Pietro appeared behind him in the kitchen. He smiled from hearing the familiar Sokovian accent at his ear and pulled the digit from between his lips, making a slight face at the nickname but humming despite it, “Happy Valentine’s Day, Sonic. And thank you for my gif--” He turned around and made to give his husband a kiss on the lips but came up short upon seeing the rose. The surprised look on his face melted into the return of his smile as he listened to Pietro and accepted the rose. “Well I’m glad you couldn’t. I love it and your cheesy moments as much as I love your thoughtful ones.” Stepping up, Cole tilted his head and pressed a gentle kiss on Pietro’s lips and then looked about for a tall glass to place the stem in so that the rosebud might receive some encouragement to continue to blossom.
“Yeah I wasn’t sure how long those bows would last,” chuckled Cole as he filled a drinking glass about a third of the way and set the rose inside. “But thank you, and no. We haven’t exactly decorated yet so we can’t redecorate much of anything.” Smirking at his technicality, Cole then added, “But no, that’s not what’s happening in there.” Thankful that he’d blocked as much of the daylight out of the living room to give an evening vibe to the fort, Cole shut off the small pot of chocolate and picked up the two trays. “If you wanna grab the bowl and the chocolate, follow me.”
The music seemed to have uncanny timing; while the Pandora station veered a bit from the mostly softer tracks, Cole couldn’t help smiling again as Elton John’s “Your Song” piano melody streamed through the bluetooth speakers. He hadn’t really commented on the song beyond that though as he pulled back one half of the makeshift curtain into the living room-turned-fort, intimate lighting, mounds of pillows and blankets, and all. For a moment, he wondered whether or not he should have lit a few candles, but he couldn’t recall whether or not they had any in the house or if they were even accessible. He also thought it was probably safer that he hadn’t lit any of them, considering how much time he ended up spending in the kitchen after the fort was assembled. Shaking his head from his own internal tangent, Cole cast his signature crooked smile to Pietro and finally told him with gentle enthusiasm, “Surprise!”
