Lucian: Then I definitely say yes.
Cooper: You free tomorrow then?
Text @ Lucian
Lucian: Yes! Definitely yes.
Cooper: Then I'm asking.
Text @ Lucian
Lucian: Oh no! That's not what I meant- I just... never mind. Yeah, urban street art is pretty much graffiti- I do enjoy most graffiti, and the rawness to it all. ...Is this your way of asking me to go with you?
Cooper: Depends. Would you say yes if I was?
Text @ Lucian
Lucian: Yeah, I'm doing good too. Oh? An art show? Now you've got my attention. ;) What kind?
Cooper: Meaning I didn't before? :(. It's supposed to be like urban street art or some shit. Isn't that pretty much graffiti? I kind of think some graffiti is nice.

Lucian: Uh... yeah. That sounded worse than it actually is. But hi. How are you?
Cooper: Good. You? I was wondering... See I just heard about this art show from someone I work with and I thought of you.
Text @ Lucian
Lucian: I'm guess this is Cooper because I haven't given my number to someone in three years...
Cooper: Three years? Wow. Yeah, this is Cooper.

Cooper: Hey.
Change in the Script || Coopcian
Lucian smiled, somewhat self-deprecatingly, before it softened a little. The fact that the man in front of him perhaps didnât see himself within all of his attractive qualities wasnât much of a surprise, considering the venue in which they had met, but it still was a bit of a shock. He had quickly came to learn that most people saw more beauty in others than themselves, no matter how true that beauty may be. It was so easy to look at someone or something else that wasnât a mirror and say that it was beautiful, because you knew it was, but when it came to yourself it was never so easy; that being his main reason for never having painted a self portrait, figuring that it would turn out to be disgraceful, no matter how great and realistic in ended up being in the end. He never painted something he didnât think was beautiful. âI guess weâll both have to work on that, huh?â he offered softly with a lopsided little smile, sort of like âwhat can you do with this low self-esteem?â.
He wasnât paying much attention to the closing distance between them, too focused on telling this man who was seemingly willing to listen about his endeavors with the arts. It was something he held a passion for, a great need for, because it kept him going when times go rough. It was at once his escape from reality and where he found his true self. If it were entirely up to him, he would never sell his art and give it away for free to those who liked it, but the economy wasnât one to work with him. Lucian had to pay his bills somehow and nothing was ever free; even being alive at that moment didnât come free but with taxes attached to every breath he breathed. At the end of his little rant, his breathing was vaguely labored, chest rising and falling swifter than it had been, and they were so very close. If he leaned forward just so then their lips would be touching and a part of him wanted that so much but he was too shy to do it, too unsure.
His eyes lit up a little brighter as he was question about what he saw in Cooperâs eyes, attention focusing closer on the very depths of his baby blues, where there was a great threat of being trapped. âSadness,â he began softly, entranced, âloneliness⌠the way they kind of⌠shine even when youâre not crying.â A part of him worried he was overstepping some boundary but getting a closeup, extended view of this man was something he cherished and wanted to milk it for everything it had to offer. âTheyâre a little⌠tough, showing that your life maybe wasnât the best that it couldâve been or⌠someone hurt you.â He bit his lip for a second before continuing, âBut thereâs⌠still a lot of soft spots, where you have more love to offer than probably most appreciate⌠probably even yourself.â He swallowed, resisting the urge to reach out and caress his cheek, fingers slightly shaky from the force of his gorgeous eyes. Knocking himself out of it, Lucian backed off quickly, muttering a soft apology, embarrassment flooding in his cheeks with a soft red.
The comment made his face flush a little brighter and he shifted his feet, laughter bubbling at his lips. His stomach tightened nervously, because he wouldnât exactly mind Cooper causing the blood to rush there. âLucian!â called out a voice behind him, causing him to jump, startled, before turning quickly to glance at the tiny form of Marisa. It was always such a great joy to see her, but he put on a sheepish face for his benefit, in the presence of his boss. She hurried over to him, though not making a great scene in front of her customers, and threw a brief smile at Cooper before turning to her employee. âWhile I appreciate you welcoming our customers so generously, there is other work to be done.â She gestured to the other customers sitting at the bar, giving off an expression of annoyance with the downward curl of her lips. The woman rushed off as quickly as she had come, disappearing behind the double doors with one quick shove to both doors.
âYes, maâam,â he called to her back with a sarcastically obedient tone. Turning back to Cooper, he rolled his eyes, completely unfazed by the display. âI guess that means I have to get back to work,â he told him with a little smile before reaching into his back pocket, acting without thinking it entirely through. Lucian ripped off a sheet of paper from the little notepad and pressed the tip of his pen into it, scribbling out his cell phone number. âOf course, call me over if you need anything more to drink, but, uh⌠hereâs my number.â He slipped it closer to the older man, a kind look on his face. âMaybe we can hang out sometime?â he offered, lifting his hand from the table and shoving it into his pocket, along with the other. Shooting a quick look over his shoulder at the other patrons of the bar, he gave Cooper another long look before he would be forced to leave. âIt was really great to properly meet you.â
Cooper resisted the urge to grab the back of Lucianâs head and hold him in place while he leaned just a little bit closer and tasted the manâs full, plump lips. His palms nearly itched with the desire to do so, and Cooper stomped down on that. He wasnât here to pick up someone, he was here to get wasted, but maybe heâd met a new friend in that process. He stayed still, his eyes no leaving Lucianâs as he fought with himself over what to do. He could lean forward and kiss the other man or he could lean back and break the strange connection that they seemed to have, but instead he did neither. Instead he challenged the young artist to tell him what he saw in his eyes, and Cooper swallowed thickly as a man heâd just met laid so much of his inner world bare. He had though he was ready for that, but he really wasnât. He sucked in a deep breath and exhaled slowly, giving just the slightest shake of his head when Lucian said that he still had some love to give. A small smile played on his lips, âI think youâre wrong, nothing about me is soft.â He tried to make his statement sound playful rather than bitter, trying to hide behind flirtation the way heâd always used to. The way that had pushed Christine from his life. Maybe it would be better to push this lovely man out too, no matter that he felt more present and alive than he had in months.
He nearly jumped when the woman who was obviously Lucianâs boss yelled at the younger man, and Cooper bit his lip and looked around. The bar was busier than it had been, and when had that happened? He looked towards Lucian again and gave him a small smile. âIâm sorry,â he said, âI didnât mean to distract you and get you in trouble.â He reached out to take the slip of paper Lucian offered him, resting his hand on the other manâs for a moment and nodding, âI think I might.â He said with a smile, still not sure if he would really try to contact the other man again. He wanted to, Christ did he want to, but it was probably a really bad idea. Cooper knew that heâd hurt anyone he was around at that moment, especially someone as beautiful as Lucian. He shouldnât even think about it. As he watched the other man walk away to take care of other customers, though, he knew that he would. There was no way he could just throw that number out and not contact him again. Not when just a short conversation had made him feel so alive again. He flagged down one of the other bartenders and closed out his tab. He grabbed his suit jacket and briefcase from the hook and left.
He walked back towards the subway station with his hands in his pockets, feeling the slip of paper that rested heavily against his thigh with his fingers. A small smile ghosted over his lips and he felt a tight, warm feeling in his chest. Hopeful. Heâd almost forgotten what that felt like and he didnât know exactly how to process that feeling sitting right next to the hollow place heâd been left with five months ago. He sighed and climbed down the stairs to the platform. He actually sat on his train ride home, looking at the tiny slip of paper that held the phone number. His eyes traced the digits absentmindedly, appreciating the other manâs handwriting. He should really throw out Lucianâs number, stop going to that bar, and continue with his self-imposed loneliness. He hadnât been punished enough. But maybe the fact that theyâd actually spoken today, that heâd made a connection with someone that heâd seen around for a long while before this, was a sign that maybe he should stop punishing himself. He didnât know.
He also didnât toss the number aside. Instead, when he was back in his too-big, too-empty apartment with itâs generic white walls and sparse furniture, he pulled out his cell and entered the number in quickly. Almost as soon as heâd put Lucianâs number in, he started typing a message to him. Cooper rarely texted anyone other than his brother (most people he knew preferred to call), but he wasnât entirely sure when Lucian got off work and he really wanted to say something to him. It was nice meeting you, he typed in, generic and safe and so boring, looking forward to seeing you again. Still safe, but maybe a little less so, and Cooper took a chance and hit send before plugging in his phone and curling up on one side of his too-large bed. His hand rested on the empty side as he closed his eyes, trying to push away the empty feeling and just sleep. Alone.

If you knew you were gonna die in a week, is there anything in particular you would do?
Go back home and spend the week with my brother, I guess. I don't really have much that would hold me here if I were going to die. I guess I'd go sky diving first, though. I've kind of always wanted to do something crazy and possibly stupid like that.
