Cooper: Then I'm asking.
Lucian: Then I definitely say yes.

Cooper: Depends. Would you say yes if I was?
Lucian: Yes! Definitely yes.

Cooper: Meaning I didn't before? :(. It's supposed to be like urban street art or some shit. Isn't that pretty much graffiti? I kind of think some graffiti is nice.
Lucian: Oh no! That's not what I meant- I just... never mind. Yeah, urban street art is pretty much graffiti- I do enjoy most graffiti, and the rawness to it all. ...Is this your way of asking me to go with you?

Cooper: Good. You? I was wondering... See I just heard about this art show from someone I work with and I thought of you.
Lucian: Yeah, I'm doing good too. Oh? An art show? Now you've got my attention. ;) What kind?

Cooper: Three years? Wow. Yeah, this is Cooper.
Lucian: Uh... yeah. That sounded worse than it actually is. But hi. How are you?

Cooper: Hey.
Lucian: I'm guess this is Cooper because I haven't given my number to someone in three years...

“Bullshit it doesn’t matter,” Cooper muttered quickly, maybe a little too quickly, when Lucian tried to brush off his poor view of himself. He didn’t like the idea of the other man somehow not realizing just how interesting and attractive he could be. He reached out again to rest his hand on Lucian’s arm, but pulled his hand away almost as soon as he made contact. “You really should think more highly of yourself,” he smiled up at the other man and shrugged, “what do I know though, right?” He swallowed a little and kept his eyes on Lucian’s face, his gaze grazing over the man’s cheekbones and full lips before landing again on his eyes. They really were gorgeous. When he turned to put another drunk on his tab, Cooper’s gaze fell to Lucian’s backside, but raised his eyes almost immediately when the younger man turned back to him, swallowing back a little lump of guilt. He really shouldn’t be oogling this man, no matter how ooglable he was.
His momentary lapse of thought was soon forgotten when Lucian started talking about art, the way he seemed to light up with it made him look younger, enthusiasm like that was like that. Lucian’s enthusiasm for his art seemed to be almost like a bright light that he radiated, nearly blinding in its intensity. Cooper had missed that, being around someone who held that much passion inside them. He couldn’t, and would never, feel something like that. As the other man leaned down and forward, Cooper did too, until their faces were barely inches apart, they eyes trained on each other. Cooper alternated between feeling as if his heart was about to beat out of his chest, the way it was pounding in his ears, sending blood thrumming through his body in a way he could almost feel, and feeling as if it had stopped entirely. Maybe they were living between the beats, frozen in some kind of suspended animation. Cooper blinked slowly, lost in the bright, white-hot light of Lucian’s loving, excited words, and the oceaniaic depths of his Caribbean blue eyes. His whole body screamed with the urge to lean forward just that little bit more and taste the other man’s full lips, but instead he kept himself still and breathed out in a sigh, his voice soft, “what do you see in mine, then, if you can see everything?”
All too soon, though, Lucian pulled away, coughing a little, and Cooper sagged, just a little, shaking his head as if to clear it. Soon, Lucian was admonishing him for making him blush and Cooper threw on his most charming smile. “Oh, I don’t think I’d want to be responsible for blood rushing to your head,” he said, his voice full of the innuendo, but his chuckle held more mirth. He watched as Lucian laughed at his lame joke, his face lighting up with the laughter. His fake serious expression cracked and he laughed along with this other man. For the first time in a long, long while, Cooper was feeling like his old self again. Not that he really deserved to.
Lucian smiled, somewhat self-deprecatingly, before it softened a little. The fact that the man in front of him perhaps didn’t see himself within all of his attractive qualities wasn’t much of a surprise, considering the venue in which they had met, but it still was a bit of a shock. He had quickly came to learn that most people saw more beauty in others than themselves, no matter how true that beauty may be. It was so easy to look at someone or something else that wasn’t a mirror and say that it was beautiful, because you knew it was, but when it came to yourself it was never so easy; that being his main reason for never having painted a self portrait, figuring that it would turn out to be disgraceful, no matter how great and realistic in ended up being in the end. He never painted something he didn’t think was beautiful. “I guess we’ll both have to work on that, huh?” he offered softly with a lopsided little smile, sort of like ‘what can you do with this low self-esteem?’.
He wasn’t paying much attention to the closing distance between them, too focused on telling this man who was seemingly willing to listen about his endeavors with the arts. It was something he held a passion for, a great need for, because it kept him going when times go rough. It was at once his escape from reality and where he found his true self. If it were entirely up to him, he would never sell his art and give it away for free to those who liked it, but the economy wasn’t one to work with him. Lucian had to pay his bills somehow and nothing was ever free; even being alive at that moment didn’t come free but with taxes attached to every breath he breathed. At the end of his little rant, his breathing was vaguely labored, chest rising and falling swifter than it had been, and they were so very close. If he leaned forward just so then their lips would be touching and a part of him wanted that so much but he was too shy to do it, too unsure.
His eyes lit up a little brighter as he was question about what he saw in Cooper’s eyes, attention focusing closer on the very depths of his baby blues, where there was a great threat of being trapped. “Sadness,” he began softly, entranced, “loneliness... the way they kind of... shine even when you’re not crying.” A part of him worried he was overstepping some boundary but getting a closeup, extended view of this man was something he cherished and wanted to milk it for everything it had to offer. “They’re a little... tough, showing that your life maybe wasn’t the best that it could’ve been or... someone hurt you.” He bit his lip for a second before continuing, “But there’s... still a lot of soft spots, where you have more love to offer than probably most appreciate... probably even yourself.” He swallowed, resisting the urge to reach out and caress his cheek, fingers slightly shaky from the force of his gorgeous eyes. Knocking himself out of it, Lucian backed off quickly, muttering a soft apology, embarrassment flooding in his cheeks with a soft red.
The comment made his face flush a little brighter and he shifted his feet, laughter bubbling at his lips. His stomach tightened nervously, because he wouldn’t exactly mind Cooper causing the blood to rush there. “Lucian!” called out a voice behind him, causing him to jump, startled, before turning quickly to glance at the tiny form of Marisa. It was always such a great joy to see her, but he put on a sheepish face for his benefit, in the presence of his boss. She hurried over to him, though not making a great scene in front of her customers, and threw a brief smile at Cooper before turning to her employee. “While I appreciate you welcoming our customers so generously, there is other work to be done.” She gestured to the other customers sitting at the bar, giving off an expression of annoyance with the downward curl of her lips. The woman rushed off as quickly as she had come, disappearing behind the double doors with one quick shove to both doors.
"Yes, ma'am," he called to her back with a sarcastically obedient tone. Turning back to Cooper, he rolled his eyes, completely unfazed by the display. “I guess that means I have to get back to work,” he told him with a little smile before reaching into his back pocket, acting without thinking it entirely through. Lucian ripped off a sheet of paper from the little notepad and pressed the tip of his pen into it, scribbling out his cell phone number. “Of course, call me over if you need anything more to drink, but, uh... here’s my number.” He slipped it closer to the older man, a kind look on his face. “Maybe we can hang out sometime?” he offered, lifting his hand from the table and shoving it into his pocket, along with the other. Shooting a quick look over his shoulder at the other patrons of the bar, he gave Cooper another long look before he would be forced to leave. “It was really great to properly meet you.”

Cooper liked making Lucian blush. He couldn’t explain what the draw was to seeing the younger man’s pale skin flush just slightly with his comment about his eyes. He licked his dry lips, his tongue sliding over his lower lip quickly and he tasted the remnants of his drink there. “You don’t believe me, do you,” he asked, though it was really more of a statement than anything else. Compliments obviously seemed to make Lucian nervous, but Cooper didn’t think he wanted to let it slide, so he leaned back in his chair a little and watched the other man carefully. It didn’t take long for her semi-flirtatious joke to deepen the pretty blush on the other man’s cheeks, making Cooper chuckle just a bit. Jesus, the way he blushed and seemed so bashful made the other man seem innocent, like a virgin bride on her wedding night. The idea sent a strange shiver through Cooper. Innocence had never really been a thing for him, instead he usually preferred unshockable, unblinking sexuality with a side of sweetness. A combination that was unbearably hard to find and he’d lost the only person he’d ever found that possessed both qualities in spades. Or maybe she hadn’t ever possessed them, but he was trying very hard not to dwell on that now.
Lucian was, for the most part, doing a pretty damn good job of distracting him from his own dark thoughts, so he turned his attention back to the other man as he grabbed the empty glass from in front of him. At the question, he nodded in the affirmative and let the man work. He glanced around the bar, thankful that it was still fairly empty. The after work crowd, for the most part, was gone, and the evening people hadn’t made their way through yet. The only people around were the truly enthusiastic drunks looking to drown away their respective sorrows with little to no conversation of liveliness, the kinds of patrons that he usually was. Cooper felt bad though, sure that he was pulling Lucian’s attention from other people, and as an unfortunate result, more tips. The other man didn’t seem to mind too much, though, but Cooper made a mental note to tip the hell out of his friendly new acquaintance to make up for it. He liked the man, more than he probably should, especially the way his face seemed to glow as he talked about his artwork. Cooper didn’t understand that kind of passion, though he did love his job it was more about people than about inner talent. Cooper had never felt the kind of singular, solitary joy that someone of a creative bent could get. His joy had always come from being around others, from interaction, and now even that felt like it would grate on him like a mortar. “Eyes have to be hard, there’s a lot in a person’s eyes,” he shrugged, “you can tell a lie by where someone looks as they talk, if you can read eyes you can read people, that’s got to be hard to capture.”
He took in the younger man’s smile, a shy, bashful look, almost as if he were mocking himself without saying a word. Cooper found his eyes settling on Lucian’s full lips as he wet them, fixating on the way the other man’s tongue moved over what he knew must be soft, sensitive skin. He shook himself a little at that thought. What had gotten into him? He dropped his eyes to the bar quickly and concentrated on breathing for a second, the way his breath slipped through his nose and into his lungs. So the bartender was attractive and obviously passionate about something, and it drew him in a strange way, but that didn’t mean that he should be thinking of those things. It only took him a second to push the thoughts back, he was a master at that after all. Cooper pushed things away, it was a simple truth to who he was. He had become overly adept at tamping down and hiding away things he didn’t want to think about, it was almost scary how good he was at it. He smiled as Lucian snorted when he laughed. It was so stereotypically dorky and didn’t fit in with the way the other man looked at all, making it absolutely adorable. His smiles were coming easier now, not forced politeness, and he realized that for the first time in months he felt at ease, thanks to the young man behind the bar. The corners of his eyes crinkled just a little with his smile as he gazed up at the other man. “Shame,” he said softly, “it was cute.” So was the deep red blush on his cheeks. Damn if he wasn’t tempted to say things just to keep Lucian flushed like that.
“God, I hope I haven’t,” he said, tilting his head to the side when Lucian affirmed that he didn’t yet seem soulless. “I missed the day in law school were they suck your soul out through your nostrils,” his voice was steady and almost serious sounding, “if they find out, I’ll be captured and forced to give it up,” he said, his voice low as he leaned in a little bit, as far as he could towards the bar, “so shush, you gotta keep it a secret.” He put his finger to his lips and looked up at Lucian, his eyes wide in a mockery of pleading.
If Cooper kept licking his lips, just the quick dart of his tongue, Lucian was sure his heart would jump out of his chest. The swift movement always pulled his attention back to them, distracting him momentarily. He couldn't help it- not with that gorgeous tongue sliding along perfect lips, leaving a light shine behind. His breath caught in his throat as he tried to keep the flicker of his eyes short, barely gazing at the movement long enough to even see anything, before he was looking back into his beautiful eyes. Everything about the man was unbearably gorgeous and he was trying to convince Lucian that he was anything close? It was laughable, really, and he did softly chuckle out loud at his question, shaking his head a little. “How'd you know?” he inquired, light sarcasm to his tone. He glanced down at the ground and shrugged. “It's whatever, y'know? Not like it matters if I believe you or not.” He had a low self-esteem and he had come to terms with it already, and that it would always get in the way of romantic relations. People weren't attracted to a lacking in confidence so he knew he was doomed to a life of loneliness if he didn't work on hiding it better. He inhaled deeply, feeling his throat closing under the pressure of his emotions, but he cleared it to reopen the passageway.
Lucian didn't mind that the man before him was pulling his attention from other customers. Cooper wasn't holding him there against his will or anything- he wanted to stick around and talk as long as he was okay with it. He knew he usually came there and stayed alone but he couldn't imagine he would want to keep him around for very long. He would get bored at some point and realize that Lucian was a waste of his time and move on, then things would go back to normal and he would just have to deal with it. He felt a vague ache in his chest, but that was usually how it was. Lucian meets someone who he can actually get along with, he gets attached, and the other person leaves. It didn't even take very long for him to get attached, either- only this short conversation had him hooked. Pulling back to the bar, he quickly refilled the drink, tapping the screen to add in another, and set it back in front of him. “Exactly!” he exclaimed, perhaps a little too excitedly. He enjoyed having this kind of conversation with someone; anything about art was a favorite topic of his. “A person's soul is in their eyes and so many people don't realize it. If we only took the time to really, really look,” he unknowingly leaned forward, a little closer to Cooper, looking deep into his eyes with a small, secret smile on his lips, “you can see everything about a person in their eyes. The way they're hard from a tough life... or the way they always shine a little when someone's sad but not crying.” His voice got progressively softer, forgetting where he was for a moment as he got lost into his blue eyes before he realized how close he actually was to the other man. He quickly backed off, sure that he was invading personal space, and he blushed harshly. “Uh, yeah.” He coughed a little, wondering what had gotten into him. He never made such a fool of himself.
Blushing even harder, he shook his head, making a small gesture of frustration with his hand. “If you keep making me blush and I pass out from all the blood rushing to my head then you will be held personally responsible,” he accused, very seriously, pointing a finger at Cooper, but his lips twitched up into a small smile. He probably sounded childish and silly but it was a sore attempt at joking off the blush that filled his cheeks. He noticed the way his eyes started crinkling at the corners, something about the man that he instantly loved. He hadn't ever seen that happen and it shocked him how much he could adore a simple change in expression. As the man continued speaking, he brought his hand back to cover his mouth as he laughed again, quickly biting down onto his lip to try reigning in the chuckles. Lucian dropped his hand to his side, unsuccessfully trying to put on a serious face and nod along with what he was saying. “Oh, of course! Wouldn't want that to happen, now, would we?” The smile broke through, wider than he was sure he had smiled in a long time. It hadn't been the greatest in his life for a while now but this man had suddenly dropped in and brightened his world.
