I once interviewed Dennis Coffey (Black Belt Jones) and Fred Wesley (Black Caesar) about blaxploitation soundtracks, but I never got the chance to speak with Luchi De Jesus. 

What a genre. 

Isaac Hayes did Shaft, Curtis Mayfield did Superfly, Marvin Gaye did Trouble Man, Barry White did Candy Tangerine Man, J.J. Johnson did Willie Dynamite, Edwin Starr did Hell Up in Harlem, Willie Hutch did The Mack, James Brown did Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off… 

It was chance for these soul and jazz legends to cut loose and enjoy the freedom to be funky and ambitious.
