And some more in-keeping with COPY: Paradiso to be launched on Weds 6 March at the space
Gathering quite a collection of places you may wish to go on a retreat to...all a 'writers paradise' in their own way...
Beautiful sunset from the retreat. JL
Screenshot of Google image search for 'paradise.'
I'm really interested in this series as a writer and artist so interested in architectures and interiors and the ways in which we create and use spaces. It also brings to mind the fetishisation of the writer's room, like the artist's studio.
We finally have a plant! A miniature bonsai, possibly the start of an indoor garden...
Starting a manual...
Rules:
Do not each lunch if you only have half an hour in the space. Food will always take priority over food. If it is sunny outside, go outside.
Ideas: Play some music. Investigate how music alters writing. Buy a plant, think about the environment you are creating.
Useful info:
There is a bin in the ladies toilets (WPPPS doesn’t currently have one) In a room with nine plug sockets non of them are currently working.
"Located in the University town of Coimbra, Portugal, the ‘Casa da Escrita’ (or, literally, House of Writing), used to be the home of the poet João Cochofel (1919-1982) before it received funding to be converted by architect and set designer João Mendes Ribeiro into a writer’s retreat. "
Selling the space

Following on from our Charts project at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, during which we came to focus on potentials for criticality in the landscape and how far the idealised 'writers retreat' impacts on our writing and experiences in a rural location, our residency here at WPPPS has called up another kind of 'ideal writing space', one with a grander, academic atmosphere, and yet a sense privacy and anonymity. We are starting to look further at a kind of manual for a retreat, and how retreat spaces - thinking spaces - escapes - are sold to us through a particular style of language. How does the space of writing affect the writing?
"peaceful, supportive environment" (Writers Retreats) "Every writer needs space. A place away from work, chores, family and other distractions [...] We welcome anyone who needs some time out to write, paint, read, walk, think, meditate – or just sleep. We’re offering complete respite from life’s distractions. This is your time. We guarantee it. We offer quiet comfortable rooms in a large traditional thatched house, with a huge log fire. There’s a desk in your room, along with a kettle for hot drinks, but you may prefer to write downstairs by the fire, or in the kitchen, by the Rayburn. You can be as solitary or as sociable as you choose. And as a working writer, I am happy to offer constructive criticism on your work." (Retreats for you)

The language and marketing of the typical writers retreat "...encourage artistic exploration, nurture creative thought, and forge bonds between diverse thinkers. Our vision is for you to find inspiration."

"revealing the surrounding ecology while allowing observation without disturbance"...
