“Her people? That’s not true at all…”
The shove knocked the wind out of him. He was never all that strong, but his degradation was getting more obvious with each passing day. He couldn’t introduce himself as the Ultimate Hope; at least not yet, but he wasn’t one of Junko’s people. He was Junko, but that was an entirely separate matter from what they were actually discussing. The fear in her eyes made something inside of him stir… How long had he waited to see those eyes light up like that? It was like a beacon of life on the dark ocean. He almost considered….
He clenched his eyes shut. In his mind, he repeated the same mantra that he always turned to in times like this. ‘Not now. Not Now. Not now. Not now…” until he was sure he was still in control. Junko’s strings ran deep in him, and he understood that. He may not be a brainwashed zombie like his classmates, but he wasn’t impervious to her either. It’s why he made such a good Junko Enoshima. His will kept him going, but his defenses allowed her to breathe within him. to course freely through his veins.
“So somebody cut you up to make you look like that? Man, that’s pretty messed up!” He said with a look of genuine concern. “I don’t know any surgeons. Why would somebody talented enough to make, well, you, have anything to do with a guy like me?”
He took a careful step toward her, this time making sure to keep his distance. Not just for the sake of her comfort, but for his. He wanted to be there for whatever happened next.
“I meant what I said, though… I’m pretty lucky. I mean, I just ran into you, right? If you need help, I’ll help. Somebody’s chasing you, right?”
“.........”
She doesn’t really believe him. Such a response to seeing Enoshima would imply he’s not scared of her. Or that he didn’t want to kill her. That leaves only one real option. He must be one of the people that followed her. She watches him breathe as if she really winded him. Is this weakling really a threat? Stupid question. Anyone could be.
Suddenly something seemed to bother the other as he closes his eyes. A curious look takes place of the merely anxious one. It was obvious he wasn’t all there or that he wasn’t very healthy. She couldn’t shake the feeling. The look in his eyes, maybe. He HAD to be Ultimate Despair. She just knew it.
But then she sees something. When he speaks and she sees real concern... Could Ultimate Despair actually feel concerned? What is she saying? Probably! They were people, right? Even if they were really messed up people. She sighs, crossing her arms over her chest as if they could protect her.
She doesn’t try to step away this time. She can’t trust him. Hell, she can’t even tell if he’s lying. But she doesn’t have a lot of options here. After all, she’s alone and lost. She’s totally scared and in danger. Maybe he CAN help her. Why would he? Surely not out of the kindness of his heart, if he’s what she thinks he is.
“How can I trust you?” She asks, her voice weaker than before. “I mean, I’m pretty sure you ARE Ultimate Despair... Right? Even if you don’t say so. I mean, you seem like you might be.” She wasn’t about to buy that he wasn’t connected with them.
“Why would you help me? I don’t get it. There’s nothing in it for you, right?” She really really wants him to prove her suspicions wrong. Hell, even him being Ultimate Despair would be bearable if he didn’t want to hurt her.
She just... can’t do this alone.
