learning that benicio del toro's character subplot in one battle after another wasn't originally in the script as it exists in the movie, and was built in after conversations benicio had with pta. him (benicio) coming in later in production firing off ideas, coming right off his work on phoenician with wes anderson, incredible.

blows my mind because those scenes of sensei sergio leading bob through this sanctuary community of baktan cross, him being a harriet tubman for the undocumented: making phone calls, pulling strings, organizing his people, etc is the most moving stuff in the movie and would be half as good without it.

But the weakness of OBAA was the camera's failure to take even a panning shot that might linger with those parallel storylines. That frenetic pace should have been interwoven with moments of stillness and quiet, to allow us to get a sense of the spaces these characters inhabit. Instead we rushed from one new set to another and the camera was overly enamored of the big stars like Leo and Sean Penn to make space for the side characters who might have ultimately enhanced our viewing experience. That's where Sinners' moment of Smoke teaching the young girl to negotiate was far more sophisticated. Also not a fan of the shaky camera technique or the grandiose shots of the church from an angle in the ceiling. Now that I know Benicio del Toro re-imagined the script with those moments, I can understand that it was a white-male centric narrative and POC were inserted into it with the camera's primary interest and loyalty remaining with the former. Unlike Sinners which refreshingly de-centers the white male gaze and excels at the ensemble.

#yeah…#this movie had great acting #but at times it really did felt that the culture was mere set dressing :(
