The All or Nothing designers manifesto Do no harm only good… When you make your plan, criticise the use of every material. Criticise everything Design as an ecosystem not as an industrious groupie. Just because it’s easy doesn’t make it the good. If it doesn’t give back, then ask yourself why are you making it? Use your intelligence, not our negligence. Not knowing your own impact on the environment is unnecessary ignorance. Consumers are stupid, if you are making for mass markets manipulate them to the good side. Don’t drop what you have and start new. These are rules for your designs not life. What’s the point otherwise. If we don’t take environmentally issues to heart then why not design anything with anything. Make environmental issues cool and not a phase. Teaching others. Not just designers Collaboration will be key

Cradle to Cradle

The reading will be important to my thesis statement because it is the origin of the idea of Cradle to Cradle, instead of Cradle to Grave. It’s full of great quotes and statements that say so many important concepts in just a few sentences for example the concept of “materials as nutrients within biological and technical cycles” which makes a lot of sense in an environmental conservational way. Basically this manifesto is an explanation of what cradle to cradle design is and gives practical examples of how it would work. Unlike that of say, a critical design perspective.

Biomimicry: Inspiration by nature

The book would be considered more as a critical perspective on my thesis statement. Biomimicry in the terms of design is creating and exploring how nature lives and applying that to our own designs. Again there are great quotes from this book that make you think about the feasibility “based not on what we can extract from the natural world, but on what we can learn from it” “biomimicry is the conscious emulation of natures genius”

I want to consider this a recourse because of the examples it contains within the slides. The comparisons of a shell fishes ridges, used to be hydro dynamic, have already been mimicked in the form of corrugated roves that make water run off easier. Along with tonnes of other examples.

Refined Critical Perspective

My pictures aim to show how lines, associated with travel have changed under modernity. It is no longer a journey one takes, but a point to point based destination orientated transport. There are no articulate maps, instead its pre-planned routes. A place developed in our minds by the story told from our fathers, replaced by the static node in a network of linked dots.

I wanted to capture the certainty in some of the photos, everyone knows where they are going, there is no adventure.

We pass by others on the same journey, we don't look at them. We look down because we already know what they are doing.

The word Tim Ingold uses is Wayfaring, which inspires the thought of wondering not in search of anything in particular.

The quintessence of the static

The author Tim Ingold argues in chapter 3 of Lines: A Brief History, about how lines have fragmented away from what it once was, a continuous gesture. Modern days, what we see in the city, the line walked is a point to point based. No longer do we wander in awe at the world but instead we traverse the city, walking to our destination on the set course

Critical Perspective

I’m looking into thinking about the way we move throughout the city. How lines run the city and how we all follow them. The issues we face when someone doesn’t follow the lines as well. See the last image for reference to that.
