“Saying somebody is street smart instead of just regular smart is like saying somebody is interesting looking instead of good-looking. What the hell is street smart anyway? I’m pretty sure I could mug him if I bought a ski mask,”
corina chuckled at the idea of casey holding conny up with a ski mask on, nodding in agreement. “i guess, but he’s pretty great so i guess i wanted to help out.” she said, biting her lip to suppress a grin. “sorry if i came off as pushy.”
conny chuckled at her insistence, holding up his hands in teasing surrender “ alright, alright, no buts. ” he agreed with a nod of his head, though if billie or blake were working, he’d be sure to make sure she didn’t pay. “ should we go now? ”
slinging her bag around her shoulder. “god, i’ve been wanting this for a while,” she grinned. “the ice cream, i mean.” she lied, nudging him with her elbow.

Casey closed the book on her desk, it was evident that her studying- or pretending to study at the very least, if she was being honest- was on hold for the time being. “No cigar, Corina,” she shook her head, “One, I don’t have the money, two, I’m not rewarding this behavior,” she said, wiggling a finger in Corina’s direction, “If you want to do something nice for Conny, find a petri dish and grow a brain for him,” she suggested with a shrug of her shoulders, “I’m pretty sure I have a twenty in my piggy bank, I’ll give it to him when we get home- he’ll survive until then, I promise,”
corina nodded mutely, crossing her hands behind her back. “i think he’s plenty smart already.” she said, smiling fondly. “er, in a street smart like, kind of way.”

brows raised for a second but grin remained. “ yeah, i’m down. ” he agreed, as casually as he could. even if it was far too cold for ice cream, if corina wanted to share one with him he certainly wouldn’t say no. “ like old times, ” he commented, though really, wasn’t that long ago that they’d done it.
corina smiled back, rocking in her seat. she finally had an excuse to share a booth with him. she couldn’t help but picture them sitting side-by-side, a goofy grin forming on her face. “i’m buying though, no buts!” she chimed.

“Hello Corina,” Casey greeted impersonally, attempting to copy Corina’s tone and use of the other girl’s name. The smile on her face only lasted a moment however and soon her eyes were rolling to the ceiling as she tipped her chin with a small groan. It wasn’t as if Casey was normally perturbed by Corina Weston’s presence but the moment she found out why the other girl had approached her, she prickled. “Does he suddenly not have legs anymore? Did a Sea Witch put his voice inside a shell so that he could kiss the man of his dreams? You don’t have to be his lackey, Corina, he’s perfectly capable of not being lazy, I’ve seen it once before,” she added at her brother’s expense, “You tell him that for the standard fee of twenty US dollars or one hundred and eighteen thousand Paraguayan Gurani, he can kiss my ass,”
adjusting the straps on her backpack, she let out a deep sigh. what was it with the roberts siblings and being so difficult with one another? she decided to try again. “conny is at tech crew right now and i had nothing to do, so maybe...” she said trailing off, “maybe i could get it for him?”

corina took a long breath as she walked to casey’s desk. she was always so awkward around her and being the shy girl that she was, she found herself constantly scrambling for the right words to say. “hi casey,” she said politely, offering a nervous smile. “um, conny sent me to ask you for his twenty dollars back.” she said sheepishly, scratching the back of her head.

conny laughed, picturing corina trying to have a conversation with a bat over a sundae. “ well, the bat doesn’t get an employee discount. i might be able to rig a friends and family one for you guys but it’s not gonna be as good. plus, not much of a talker and i recall, just today, you were saying you missed my talking so, double missing out. ” he joked, not really realising what he was implying.
corina took her nose out of her book, grinning far too much to pay attention to what chapter two of her vonnegut book said. straightening her back she decided to just say it. “maybe we should ditch the bat and go for a sundae together then,” she blurted, hands nervously folding the corners of her pocketbook.

Jessica shook her head at the offer. “I’m driving, remember? Besides… this isn’t really my scene,” she admitted, checking her purse occasionally to ensure that no one stole her car keys again. “Remind me why we decided it was a good idea to come to a Northlake party again? The last time I went to one of these, I got robbed, flashed, and given toilet water to drink.”
“it’s just soda, don’t worry.” she said, waving the red solo cup filled with pepsi before taking a gulp. drinking wasn’t really her thing either. “we’re here to relax and lose a little bit of brain cells after that killer final, remember?” she said with a dramatic sigh.

thankfully conny managed to swallow the nervous burp those words caused and turned it into a chuckle instead. it seemed like she was joking anyway, trying to hid laughter at her own joke in the book, so he joked too “ well, you’re in luck ‘cause i don’t generally bring a baseball bat to school and think coach would get pretty pissed if i stole one. maybe the bat can walk you home tomorrow. ”
“maybe the bat and i could stop by dairy’s and split a sundae on our way home,” she chuckled. it’s been a minute since they’d done that together. she always insisted on splitting with him to “save money” but deep down, she knew that was a lie.

“ two. three if you could photography club but no one even shows up for that. ” conny corrected quickly with a chuckle, though if you counted yearbook photography and tutoring (which conny didn’t) he was then at five, one for each day of the school week. which was a lot, really. “ if i say he’s not does that change your mind? ” he asked, light laugh following the question.
“nah, i’m more fond of the guy wielding the bat anyway,” she said softly, her voice almost a whisper. she could feel cheeks burning up as she quickly buried her face into her book in an attempt to seem nonchalant.

cue a stomach flip. grin quickly found its way onto his features as he tried to push down any kind of dorky reaction that may have naturally formed. “ yeah? ” he responded, before he looked away again and continued “ i’m glad. ” with a nod. a moment passes and then he asks “ did you need me to walk you home today? ” he was supposed to be doing something for tech crew but he’d skip it.
seeing him smile was contagious as she found herself biting her lip to suppress a stupid grin. “last time i checked you have like, a bajillion after-school activities,” she exaggerated, making a counting gesture with her fingers. “i don’t know, is your baseball bat coming with?” she said, cocking an eyebrow.

songs blaring through the speakers and bright lights hit corina making her flinch. “i will never get the appeal of underage drinking,” corina yelled over the music, taking a sip of her soda. “you want a sip?”

conny gave a slow nod of his head, it’d been unspoken but of course he’d look out for corina. like he’d look out for his family. “ maybe i should start carrying it around twenty four seven, ” he suggested, joining her with a chuckle and small smile pulling at the corners of his lips. “ i don’t know how it’d go at work, ” he added with another chuckle. “ balancing plates with a baseball bat under one arm. ”
corina let out a soft laugh, picturing him hobbling around with a baseball bat while carrying a bunch of plates. “walking home with you definitely makes me feel a lot safer,” she admitted. she always felt safe around him.

“ and here i thought i was doing you a favor. ” he played along with a small, melodramatic sigh. though he had been glad for the distraction from his thoughts for a moment, her questioning didn’t surprise him. “ flickering between how rami malek didn’t have to go that hard on bohemian rhapsody but he did that for us. ” he didn’t wanna get into the gloomy shit right away “ and i don’t know, everything that’s been going on in town, i guess. kinda feels like the middle of a netflix crime documentary. a lot of shit things are happening but you know nothing. you know? ”
corina nodded, feeling a shudder go through her. she definitely looked over her shoulder when she walked home every night. she put a hand on his shoulder, offering him a comforting smile. “we’ll both be okay,” she said giving him a reassuring pat. “i have you, and you have a baseball bat.” she chuckled.

“Please, dude - just…leave me alone or get decked.” She was working on her anger - in the past, she would’ve just went for the punch. It was sometimes surprising to her, that people still tried. ( maybe they just felt bad, considering the recent turn of events in her family )
corina shrugged, unflinching. “alright, i was about to offer you a sip but suit yourself.” she sighed, taking a gulp of her convenience store slushie. she was used to this side of naomi.

brows raised when he felt a finger prod his cheek, drawing him from his thoughts with a “hmm? ” followed quickly by an answer to her question. “ yeah. yeah, no, i’m good. just, i dunno, thinkin’. ” he shrugged, stuffing hands into his pockets. “ thought you might appreciate me shutting up for a bit. ” he joked, grin quickly forming on his lips.
corina sat up, placing her pocketbook on the table. “it feels super weird without you talking my ear off,” she teased. “what’s on your mind?”

“hey,” corina said softly, poking his cheek with her index finger. “you alright? you’re awfully quiet today.”
