The morning didn’t start with coffee or anything nice, but with a fight loud enough for the whole university to hear: the math teacher had a huge argument with his husband - the physics teacher. The physmath had never been so close to collapsing, but well… they’ve been married for over… do people even live that long?Nightmare sighed tiredly, sorting through papers in his office. His sister was sitting in front of him, balancing a pencil on her nose. Seeing her brother like this felt strange to her - he never let himself show so many emotions in such a short time. He practically raised Dream from infancy, and after their parents died, he became her full guardian. Kill had been like a second father to the girl, and his marriage to Nightmare was a real celebration for her. So it hurt to see both of them like this… but teaching drained them to the bone. The cafeteria was filled with gossip about the teacher's possible divorce, which only made the blonde more anxious and messed with her thoughts. Warm arms wrapped around her shoulders from behind, pulling her into a hug and stealing her attention.
–Cross, what’s wrong? - Dream looked into her girlfriend’s eyes before soft, familiar hands cupped her face. –Are you drinking only milk again? Don’t cry to me later when your stomach hurts.
–I already ate, love. But you should get something sweet - that sour face doesn’t suit you, - Cross giggled, then frowned a little when the joke didn’t help. The white-haired girl sighed, kissed her girlfriend’s forehead. –Come on, let’s get some fresh air. Far away from nosy students. I even have chocolate chip cookies.
Ink was rocking on his chair in the classroom, bored out of his mind. He wasn’t allowed into the cafeteria - his photo literally hung on the door with a “strictly forbidden” sign - so he survived on whatever his friends managed to bring him. At least he wasn’t alone: Blue and Error were there as his “support group.” Blue was sleepily finishing the berries from his lunch; he’d spent all week preparing for an exam to get first place in the course, overworked himself, and ruined his sleep schedule. That explained the silence. Error was flipping through a mafia romance novel, occasionally adjusting his annoying glasses. The sun wasn’t as hot today; clouds were gathering, maybe for rain, though it didn’t make the air any less stuffy. Ink glanced at his friends, then looked out the window - and saw two familiar heads. If Error hadn’t grabbed him by the scarf in time, he would’ve already climbed onto the fourth-floor windowsill just to break the boring silence.
–Sure, go jump off the roof too, you idiot, - Error grumbled, but not loud enough to wake the poor student sleeping right next to them - face-down in his food, fork still in hand. –Actually… no, go on. Less noise.
–I just wanted to wave! It’s not my fault you think so badly of me, little Error, - the creator stuck out his tongue, earning an annoyed glare.
–Don’t stand. Jump, - Error said flatly, letting go of his scarf. Ink rolled his eyes and looked out the window again, but the girls were already gone. He had no choice but to sit back down.
–You know what happened to Dream? Yesterday she was fine, but today I can’t catch her at all. She’s walking around like she lost her soul, - Ink kept rocking the chair. One day he really would fall.
–You should actually attend your morning classes instead of forgetting where the university is.
Error already knew his friend had the memory of a seventy-year-old grandpa. A month ago, the artist left his dakimakura in Error’s dorm room. Error had never had to explain anything so desperately in his life - especially not to his older sister who came to visit - like why there was a giant body pillow with half-naked Ryan Gosling in his bed. But well… that’s what he got for being friends with Ink.
–Library after classes? - Error asked unexpectedly, and Ink nodded right away. Hanging out together was better than staring at a crack in a dorm ceiling. They just needed to remember to walk Blue to his brother, or he’d fall asleep in the classroom again.Trees swayed in the wind, clouds thickened, leaving hope only for those who forgot umbrellas or said, “It’ll be fine, the sky is clear, why carry extra weight?” The kingdom of books greeted them with silence, so different from the ringing outside.
–Skip the next class? I don’t think your brother will be mad if we miss one super-important math lecture. - Cross said, throwing her jacket on the couch before sitting down and pulling Dream into her arms. Dream immediately collapsed into the hug, pressing her face into Crosse's chest, on the verge of tears. There had been too many arguments at home lately - not directed at her, of course. No one dared raise their voice at Dream, much less anything worse. Her girlfriend’s heartbeat calmed her, kept her from breaking down.
–My love, you know we all care about you, right?
–Yes… - Dream whispered, looking at her fingers covered in small bite marks from stress.
–I’m sure neither Nightmare nor Kill will love you any less. They’re just going through a rough patch. Even if they do break up, it won’t change how they feel about you, - Cross kissed her forehead and stroked her hair gently. –They raised you together for over fifteen years. Give them time.
–Thank you… really, thank you, - Dream whispered. Her eyes stayed down, but Cross knew they were full of tears. How did she know? Her shirt instantly got wet. All she wanted at moments like this was to hold her girlfriend close - nothing more was needed for happiness. Two heads - one blonde, one black-haired - peeked from behind the half-open door, nudging each other, then quietly backing away when they saw things were fine.
–Peeking is rude, you know… - Ink said, trying to put on a serious face before bursting into laughter. Error couldn’t help but smile a little too.
–Keep it down, it’ll be bad if they hear us, - Error sighed, checking the time.
–Tea with a chocolate bar?
–Huh? Oh..yeah. Tea with a chocolate bar, - Ink wiped a tear of laughter and followed his friend.
The library grew quiet again, wrapped in the soft magic of evening. Tonight the books witnessed something more intimate than passionate love - something gentle and light as a feather. A promise to stay close, and what matters even more - to keep that promise. Everything will be okay. Trust the person you love, open your hidden fears, and let them ease your heart.
And… someone definitely stayed overnight at the university.
