Yaku was one of Kuroo's first friends when he entered high school. Since Kenma wasn't at Nekoma at the time, he hung around Yaku whenever he was free. He messed with Yaku a lot (he still does), though he held a large amount of respect for him (still does). Though Kuroo quickly became popular in their school and even someone that was sought after by everyone, he still decided to allot his time into hanging out with those he was close to, Yaku included.

Kuroo, on the other hand, was more reserved and less confident than he showed in public and Yaku could easily see that. It caused Kuroo some trouble during his first year when it came to performances. Though his charisma and talent overshadowed his anxiety, it was still evident in Yaku's eyes that Kuroo was nervous about performing. Even when Kuroo was officially scouted by a recording company, he feared even stepping into the company's building to perform for them. Yaku took matters into his own hands, literally shoving Kuroo into the building, telling him that he's not allowed to leave until he's done. Thanks to Yaku, Kuroo was able to seal the deal and slowly rise to fame in Japan.

However, just like the rest of his close friends, Kuroo tends to feel regret over his decision to focus on his career over bonding with his closest friends, Yaku included. Yaku is one of the people that he can rely and trust on the most, ensuring Kenma's safety entirely to Yaku, something he can't trust even the closest of friends with. Though when it comes to thoughts like this, he tells himself that instead of regretting how he feels, he feels that he should thank Yaku for what he did that day and blocks away the thought of ever regretting how happy he is with his career choice.
