When he had texted Cormac telling him he wanted to tell him something, and his friend had replied to meet him on the beach, Ben hadn’t really pictured this situation. The whole tremendous body, combined with sweat and sport clothes was almost too much for his sanity, and made what he was going to say even more difficult. Still, Benjamin’s face was a porcelain mask of pure lack of emotion when he approached the other and sat next to him.Â
He hated the beach, really. He didn’t like the sea, he didn’t like the sand, he wasn’t even that friendly with the sun if he was being honest. There was that detail about it being one of the reasons humanity was alive at all, but Ben liked to believe his relationship with the giant gassy star was one where they could peacefully ignore each other. The only reason he accepted to go there, was because Cormac had asked. Honestly, Cormac was the only reason he accepted to go many places.Â
He rolled his eyes at his friend’s comment, but the gesture was followed by a soft chuckle. “Oh no, no, no, don’t let me stop you. Go ahead. Just scream when you notice your limbs going blue. I must tell you though, I’m an awful Leonardo DiCaprio and even a worse Kate Winslet so Titanic will have to wait.” He shrugged. “No, seriously, I have something to tell you and before you say anything, no, you can’t come up with any weird ideas to rescue me.”
If it had always been easy for Cormac to call up a carefree grin even when he was feeling anything but, the knowledge that it was Ben coming to join him was enough to make the twist of his grin real. “Benjamin!” Cormac turned and fixed the other with a look of feigned indignation. “First of all, you are a total Leo DiCaprio. At least the Titanic version, what with that camera of yours. You know you can always photograph me like one of your french dudes.” Cormac shot him a wink; it wasn’t like Benjamin didn’t have all sorts of photos of Cormac for his portfolio already, though there were none of that kind. Which was a weird thought to dwell on, and Cormac pushed it aside in an instant.
“Second -- are you telling me you would just leave me to fall off a door that’s definitely big enough to hold two people? And here I thought you cared.” The tease was punctuated with a mock shake of his head and a playful nudge as Cormac leaned over and knocked his shoulder against Ben’s.Â
But the levity didn’t last, not when Ben was quick to bring up the reason he’d wanted to talk in the first place. The second Ben told him he didn’t need to be rescued, Cormac’s first instinct was to believe exactly the opposite. Already his mind was turning over the possibilities. “...No promises,” he answered after a moment’s consideration, concern settling over his features as he looked at his friend. “What’s up, man?”
