They were to make rounds together tonight.
It still stirred a strange sensation in her stomach, to know that of all the exceptional, brilliant wizards who she could have shared this responsibility -- Head student -- with, it had been Nikolai who had been chosen, who had been deemed her equal. She had looked him in the eye that day in the headmaster’s office, and seen the understanding dawn upon him just as it struck her. They were not imagining things. Even Dumbledore, one of the greatest leaders alive, saw it in them -- a match, an equal and opposing force. She had looked him the eye then, and perhaps that was the moment in which she knew with certainty that he was a threat. No matter how smooth and deviously he smiled, he was a threat. Her threat. Hers to neutralize.
The trophy room is stark, permeated with a chill, a thrill. Selene waits for Nikolai to arrive as arranged, her eyes roaming over the rows upon rows of golden awards, each bearing the name and recognition of some glorious achiever, notable accomplishment. They shine with the glow of decades of toiling hands. But no matter, this was all just a fleeting show. Real legends never died, and they certainly didn’t need to be memorialized in this dim-lit, stifling room: lost in dust and memory. Real legends -- well, they lived on. Their names were written in history books and alluded to by scholars. She would never be a legend. But she had the ability to make them.
And speak of the devil, and he appears in robes of black and silver, looking every inch like a legend in the making, gold standard king. She doesn’t smile at him, but instead turns; arches a brow, regards him with a lingering silence.
“You’re late,” she says at last, voice taking on a cold edge. Everyone bowed to him, but she would not let him see her quake. “You must know that it’s bad manners to keep your company waiting, Nikolai.” And she can’t help it, she has to touch upon this bone too, just to make it feel her presence. “Were you with Evan?”
