NUU'SAQUA - City/Pueblo/Place of Deer

Welcome to the first page of my webcomic! I want to share my indigenous language of mixtec with everyone, so i will try to give extra background to to the words of the titles in the description!

Nuu: Nuu, pronounced like "new" can mean a lot of things in Mixtec, it can mean face, it can mean the earth, it can be a town or a village or even a specific building!!

Saqua: Saqua, almost pronounced like "saw-kwa" is very cool, deer are very important to tons of indigenous communities as a source of food, but also carry a very important religious connotation to many cultures as well, and I'm very happy that we have a word for them in Mixtec

Ti'Vheh'nii - Thank You "May Your Home Be In Heaven"

I spoke this one time to another mixtec speaker, and i was shocked, apparently their phrase for thank you was incredibly similar, almost like "ti-ve'e-indivi" literally meaning "may your house be in the sky" I always took this to mean simply "thank you" I am grateful that this phrase is kind of spread far and wide.

Nuu'Kah'Ndii - Ember "Fire that Crackles Bright"

A fire can sing too! the flames dance like embers floating in the sky, or a raging wildfire that choke the sky out. To me it sounds like everything dances, and everything sings. What does it take to listen to everything's songs.

Nuni'Nda - Purple Maize

My family would tell me there is no word for purple in our language, the idea for it simply doesn't exist. So it would simply be understood as "Ndii" or a very deep blue. yet when I asked what would be the name of Purple Maize, my grandfather answered "Nuni'nda!" "wait so we do have a color for purple?" "No, we don't" "But you just told me the name for purple maize, could i call a purple tortilla "Hita'Nda" "no, that's silly, we don't have a word for that" The conversation went like that for a bit, I don't have an explanation for the lack of purple in my language yet it exists solely in relation to Maize, It simply is the name for it.

Tachi - Wind

All over the Mexico the plumed serpent's image reigns supreme. He is the lord of the wind, the one who carries the sun with the wind through the day.

He is the guide of the dead as well as the twin of the the god of monsters.

To the nahua people he Quetzalcoatl, the precious plumed snake. In mixtec he has another name Nuhu Tachi, and in my own variant we lack the name for god, so he is Dios Tachi. In other variants his name almost sounds like Noo Tachi, or "Face"

I think I will interpret him as "The face of the wind" a title to give the wind a voice. To give the wind the aspect of personality, fickle, trickster-like, and powerful.

Ka'i - Song/I am singing

There is this song about rice pudding that was sung around me and sung around my brothers and sisters and peers, sometimes the lyrics went like this:

"Arroz con leche mi querio casar Con una señorita de San Nicolás"

"Que sepa coser, que sepa coser"

"Rice with Milk, I want to marry With a young woman from St. Nicholas"

"Who knows how to embroider and who knows how to sew"

There's tons of different other lyrics, mostly alluding to this young woman being a subservient wife.

Sometimes when I was little I changed the lyrics around, to make her sound like an evil step mother, or make her dance and sing.

I have been wondering about what kind of dreams this woman had, what sort of ways she expressed herself in the song.

Does she want to sing or write? Does she want to party and dance? All the women in my life who I admire all have dreams. I wonder what dreams I will realize.

Ka'sa'i - Dance (Singing with your feet)

Ka'sa'i literally means Dancing with your feet. You might actually recognize Ka in other updates, meaning expression, or speaking, but it can also be singing!! You can express yourself with so many things, isn't it wonderful? What other things can you sing with?
