Growing up in LA, Sora was no stranger to hot weather. In fact, hot weather is just an excuse to drop an inch off a hemline guilt-free. But, there's something about being surrounded by children and families on a hot day that makes her feel on edge. Their negative vibes and squabbles are starting to grate on Sora's iron nerves. It was so unlike her to get annoyed, but if she had to hear one more mother scold their child for 'ruining their dinner' by eating too many sweets, she might need to scream. Out loud. And that would not be cute or neighbourly.

So, treating herself to treats seemed like the lesser evil. If anything, it's her civic duty to improve her mood. So, naturally, visiting the confection stand is a matter of national emergency.

Sora had been blankly surveying the options while queueing for the sweets and was still spaced-out when the man behind the counter begins speaking to her. So much so that she zones in only when a flash of blue zaps her out of her trance. Her eyes lift and squint as she tries to make sense of what was possibly said to her prior to the very last part.

"...Sorry..." She blinks, finally tuning back into reality. She smiles, but it's more polite than apologetic, as if he should be sorry for interrupting her thoughts. "Did you say you were an alien?" She asks airily. "I've been to this park like, loads of times and I feel like if there were aliens, I would have seen them by now."

One hand twirls a long lock of hair around her finger. Her gaze drifts back to the endless rows of candy, sparkling almost immediately. Her finger hovers aimlessly across the display. "Also…Am I allowed to buy one of everything? Or is there a limit per chi-I mean person."

Oblivious to her lack of attention, it was Mingyu's turn to be confused when the girl apologized out of seemingly nowhere. Finding it hard to pinpoint where exactly the communication had gone wrong — he had definitely memorized the script correctly — he opted for a laugh. "Nu uh, I tried to look like one. Plus, if you've been here loads of times, how come I've never seen you?" He challenged playfully with a tilt of his head. "If you did, you should know the secret concession rules. You can only have one of everything if you know the password to the cotton candy society."

Of course he was bullshitting and since he was on the clock, he had already started gathering what she'd asked for; one of each item. "When you say one of everything, do you want one cotton candy, or do you want a pink and a blue one?" Gyu asked whilst tossing the less complicated items, such as the M&Ms and Skittles, into a bag. "Do you have someone who can help you carry all of this stuff? I can put a lid on the Icee, but there isn't much I can do to keep the popcorn in."

" jade, johnny, come on, no runnin' off, " frankie calls after his niece and nephew but he's pretty sure his voice gets lost in the noise all around them. with his entire family back in town for the 4th, frankie—despite kinda working right now—has been designated babysitter. he doesn't mind, he likes the kids, he'll take spending time with them over hanging with his brothers any day but they are testing him today.

when he catches up to them, they're queuing for the popcorn stand and already chatting up the person in front of them. " with what money are you guys paying for this, huh ? " he says and the look the twins give him is enough to make frankie take out his wallet. " one bag to share. one. you guys already had too much junk. and then we're gonna go wait for the fireworks, yeah? "

when the kids settle and start talking about stuff he knows nothing about, he turns to the person in front of them. " hope they weren't bothering you too much. they're at the age where they love lying and telling stories. " they take a step forward but the line looks like it's going to take forever. " anyway—enjoying this thing? "

Life would have been so much easier if they had just eaten at home. Or if they hadn't come to this holiday thing in the first place. Unfortunately, bad choices were made that day and Nova now found herself in a queue to buy snacks she didn't fully care for. Although she supposed popcorn was the lesser evil, while eyeing the amount of kids zooming around on sugar rushes. They were nervously tugging at some loose threads on the oversized flannel covering their frame, when something tugged at the back of it. Nova then immediately regretted turning around when faced with two kids.

"Uh, hi?" This was not their forte. Adults were doable. To a degree. Though they were a lot easier to deal with in her work setting. On the street? Not so much. Kids were a whole different ballpark — perhaps it was residual trauma, but anyone below the age of, well, probably twenty, made them nervous. Still, their lips automatically forced themselves into an awkward smile, their wide eyes and tense body language hopefully the only indicator of her mental predicament.

Being addressed by an actual adult helped a little bit. "What? Oh, no, it's fine." It wasn't really fine, but what else was she supposed to say? Normal people said they were fine, they asked 'how was your day?' and always say 'good' when you ask.

Irrelevant.

"I, uh..." Say yes, Nova. You're supposed to say yes. "It's not really my thing." You had one job. "I mean, it's pretty loud." Great. "You seem like a good dad, though, they didn't protest at all. My little brother would have started crying."

scraped knees and bloody noses were the headline of the night. there were a few people who would laugh off the lack of severity in the injuries he often saw at astroland. surely you want something more exiting! they'd say and ellie would laugh, a lighting strike of a grin across handsome features. if bloody jeans and a dry nose were the scary things people would experience, that was fine with him. though prepared for the worst at any given time -- he'd much prefer hello kitty bandaids to hospital rides. sending the latest toddler back to their parents with a sweet and a sticker, he turned and brows lifted in surprise. laughter escaped despite himself, " don't tell me you're just here because you heard i have sheriff badge stickers. "

Nova sometimes felt like they really did just anger some cosmic being in a previous life. Or maybe it was more common to sustain injuries at an amusement park than she had ever been aware of. "So... funny story and I'm sure it's nothing, " They held up a disposable camera that looked a little beaten up. "I don't know who this belongs to, and I'm totally going to drop it off at lost and found after this, but it kind of, you know, attacked me and I thought it might help if you knew what hit me, because my head kind of hurts?" She pushed her bangs to the side, revealing a shallow cut on her forehead. "It must've dropped out of someone's pocket, I was walking near one of the roller-coasters." They managed a sheepish smile. "Who even still reads guideline signs anymore, right?"

"You have stickers?" Mingyu echoed, already momentarily forgotten why he was here in the first place, until the sting in his hand sent a reminder to his brain. He hated to have to admit defeat like this — he wasn't the type to worry about small injuries. However, it had started to make his job quite impossible. "I, uh- Right, so-" He wasn't speechless often, but he was embarrassed. "I burned my hand, right, on the popcorn machine. The thing... cattle?" He frowned, unable to remember the correct word in English. "It was the steam and it was, like, fine, but then I got oil on it too, so..." He trailed off, presenting his hand, showing Ellie the burn marks. "It doesn't hurt that much," It did sting like a bitch, actually. "But they said I should get it looked at or something."

❝ fuck's sake, just because i'm not in uniform don't mean you gotta talk to me like i'm one of them. ❞ as he says the word, judah gestures vaguely over his shoulder toward the unusually large crowd of people wandering the park. tourists. he'd be a liar to try and suggest that astroland doesn't need the business, but he also didn't actually expect this level of turnout. listen, judah saw independence day. it wasn't bad, but he didn't think it was this good, either. he turns his gaze back to mingyu, squinting against the early afternoon sun. ❝ i'm just coming over here 'cause i got voluntold i gotta go sit target at the dang dunk tank and i forgot my water, wanted to grab a drink before i gotta sizzle in the sun for a couple hours. ❞

should he be drinking water? maybe. but he's pretty sure he's gonna swallow enough of it from the tank. he'll be fine.

❝ did they make you drink one just so you could do that? ❞ judah asks when mingyu sticks out his tongue. and then, after a moment of internal deliberation, he adds, ❝ what flavor is it? blue raspberry? ❞ he shakes his head, glancing over the counter of the stand as if he might find the answer there. ❝ if it's blueberry or something, you can keep that shit. i don't want it. but if it's blue raspberry― ❞ he hesitates for exactly half a second before, ❝ ―fuck it, gimme a large, mingyu. i deserve it. ❞

Mingyu tilted his head, feigning innocence. "I have to do the talk, Judah. Do you want me to get fired?" Unfortunately he had never been a great actor and he was unable to hide the wicked grin pulling at the corners of lips. "You know, I wanted to volunteer for that, but I am stuck here." It wasn't a complete lie — he had considered it, but then thought better of it. As much as he had a 'try everything' philosophy, repeatedly getting dunked into a water tank while not being able to swim did not sound like a good time. One thing he really needed to cross off his bucket list to be able to get to many more things.

"Nope," He playfully let the p pop. "But I had to try it for science. And for sales. And because I was thirsty." He grinned a slightly blue stained smile. "It is blue raspberry!" Mingyu then happily announced, practically bouncing on his feet as he snagged a large cup off the stack to fill up. "This will be perfect, you can have the blue tongue and it will help me sell more of these, because you will be the proof that aliens really do have blue tongues!" It was all coming together. "So are you secretly hoping one of the rides decides to break down in a minute? It's okay, I won't tell anyone."

PERHAPS IT'S JUST THE case of resting bitch face that some say daria was born with ( even her father had eluded to the notion at one point -- without saying the words entirely ), but any time she speaks in a positive light, she's noticed that it comes as a surprise. " why're you apologizin'? y'did nothin' wrong, after all. " she says with a genuine yet thin-lipped smile. perhaps it's also because daria has never been a particularly nervous individual, sometimes scarily confident in both her speech and her choices. and yet, she's well aware that not everyone shares her free-spirited nature, leading to a patience that some may not expect.

as the other expresses their hunger, daria nods -- adjusting her bag once again as if she doesn't know what to do with her hand. it's not because it's heavy at all, no. it just contains her uniform suit and towel and a couple of hair products to keep the chlorine of the astroland pool from frying her hair off. it had never been cheap to look this good. " yeah, absolutely. c'mon... there's this guy who works at concessions -- if i bat my eyelashes enough times, he'll throw in a free ice cream. " yeah, daria was a flirt, but it had its benefits. who would ever say no to a free ice cream?

" you got'a cat? me too! " daria responds with a softer smile. that was usually the case when she talked about janis, who may as well be her first born child. of course her eyes soon fall on her own shirt -- a mazzy star tour t-shirt that she'd cut the neckline off of some time ago. " that's kinda of ya, thanks. i just got off, so i just kinda threw this on. "

perhaps it's the fact that daria feels like she's been here forever now, the years having passed by at the speed of light. " oh my gosh, you're an astroland virgin? feels like seein' a unicorn these days. 'm daria, it's nice to meet y'nova. pretty name. "

The question made Nova let out a nervous laugh as their shoulders came up in a half-shrug. "I don't know, I was just talking about puke a lot..." They trailed off, not sure if it had been a rhetorical question or not. Why was that always so hard to tell? Why did rhetorical questions even exist? For people who wanted to feel smart? "Wow, you must come here often if you know people here." She mused out loud. While it was a foreign concept to Nova to even attempt to con people out of free stuff, there was no way they'd say no to a free ice cream. Well, as long as the mess on the floor hadn't been ice cream. What was that again about it not ruining their appetite?

"Oh, yes, I have three actually. I sort of ran away from them. Not permanently! Just today, you know, because of the fireworks and all." Dragging her foot across the pavement, she pretended to be occupied with brushing potential cat fur off her sleeve. "Did you go swimming?" The question was only brought on by the faint smell of chlorine in the air and the current state of the other's hair. "That's another place where I would get turned into a lobster." The statement was mostly muttered to herself, but shared out loud out of a sort of curtesy.

An Astroland virgin? Nova supposed that could be added to the list of types of virgins they were. Not that they had such a list. No, really, they didn't. Just a mental one.

"I moved here last year, I've mostly been busy settling into home and work and stuff." Right, because that took ten months for the average person. "Is it usually this busy? Like, does the rest of the town just come here every day?" There was a hint of worry in her voice — she had sort of hoped to come back on a quieter day to actually be able to check out more of the rides. "Oh, thank you. My parents gave it to me."

"I mean, duh."

DARIA HADN'T ANTICIPATED BEING on shift on this particular day -- in fact, her days off were ordinarily incredibly sacred. her worn-in couch had barely seen her as of late between her shifts by the pool and club enigma ( but they'd seen plenty of her cast-aside cardigans and jackets that were covered in glitter ). and yet, there were times when daria cursed herself for being an occasionally nice person. shift coverage was supposed to be a mutually beneficial relationship. she had at long last been released, chlorine-coated hair tied in a knot at the top of her head with her denim tote bag slung carelessly over her shoulder. she just wanted to go home, but she had some people to say goodnight to before she did just that.

that's puke. the words come out so suddenly that it takes a second for daria to process that she is the one being spoken to. perfectly plucked eyebrows quickly narrow before they return to their normal -- followed by another gaze of clear disgust. " bleh -- think someone's mama let them eat too much ice cream. that's like... a biohazard. " after a moment, she rips her gaze away before gesturing to a nearby janitor. " he'll take care it, no prob... you good? "

the longer the other talks, the more daria's confused where things are going -- but she makes the effort to listen. perhaps because she wants to try to understand. if you find yourself staying here too long -- as desolate as astroland may feel sometimes, it can be quite overwhelming. " so, were y'gonna keep starin' at the puke.... or did y'have other plans for your time here? " the question rings out in the stale night air, the lifeguard follows it up with a smile. " c'mon. i was gonna say lets get y'somethin' to eat -- but i'm sure that wasn't appetizing t'see. "

Nova wasn't sure what response she had expected in reply to her puke heavy ramble, but she did visibly deflate just slightly when the reaction at least wasn't entirely negative. "So sorry," They still choked out, regardless of their yapping being received relatively well. They managed to tear their gaze away from the maybe-vomit and forced a couple of seconds of eye contact, just to try to not seem completely incapable of being a human being. As funny as it would perhaps be to be rumored to be one of the aliens people were so interested in, it would no doubt make their quiet life a lot harder to live.

"Honestly, I could maybe go for something." She admitted, stomach growling as if on cue. Thank goodness their surroundings were so noisy. "I'm pretty sure I skipped breakfast. And lunch." Nova furrowed their brows, trying to recall if they'd had anything other than a quick coffee to hype themself up and have an excuse to be jittery in public. "My cats like to throw up at the worst times, so it takes more than this to ruin my appetite." She accidentally snort-laughed and immediately felt her cheeks burn. "I really like your shirt. It's cute."

"Uh, I think they have a food area here? It's my first time coming here. Sure picked an interesting day for it. Sorry, hi, I'm Nova."

Days like today would be categorized under one of Mingyu's favorite days of the year, if it hadn't been a workday. There was something cruel about being stuck behind a stand with a perfect view of at least three rides that he couldn't get on. Sure, the pay was good, but aside from that, the only thing that made up for his sweet smelling prison was the amount of people in the park. Gyu was used to very quiet days, especially the rainy ones were long and boring. But at least today Astroland seemed to be bustling with people eager to bring their kids somewhere for free.

( And what was better than unsupervised kids? Unsupervised kids on a sugar rush. It reminded him of his own childhood — careless, fearless, bound to get into accidents. )

"What can I get you today? We have fresh, extra-terrestrial popcorn, galactic cotton candy clouds, M&Ms from Mars, spaceship worthy Skittles- You know what? Can I interest you in our limited edition Icee? It is guaranteed to stain your tongue for the rest of the day, so you can convince the aliens you're one of them! I tested it."

He stuck out his tongue as proof, showing off the bright blue color. "I drank it two hours ago. Can you believe it?"

Rollercoasters? Check. Screaming kids? Check. Noisy fireworks? Check. Hordes of people? Check. The perfect recipe for a good old nervous breakdown, in Nova's cookbook of life. Had they dragged themself to Astroland regardless? Absolutely. It wasn't so much that she had decided to listen to all those people who had insisted that socializing would get easier eventually if she'd just keep putting herself out there — in all honesty it was just the lesser evil, compared to sitting at home with a bunch of stressed out cats, who only hated noise slightly more than their owner did.

Now normally they would keep their headphones firmly on their head and a walkman in their pocket, but the cacophony of sounds inside an amusement park were too loud for their poor cassettes to stand a chance. So the only available option at this moment in time was to be too present in their surroundings, which ironically prompted Nova to extend out a shaky arm in the direction of an oncoming person. "There's puke." She simply blurted out, blinking a few times to let their brain catch up with their actions. "Sorry, I think it's puke." The nurse moved her arm to instead awkwardly gesture at the unknown substance on the ground.

Help, what if it was just melted ice cream?

"Do you think it's puke?" Good job, Nova. Stellar first impression. Gold medal. "Not- Not that I think you're an expert on puke. You don't look like an expert. Unless you are. I'm mainly an expert in cat puke." Shit. "I mean, even if it's someone's cotton candy from three hours ago, it would still suck to step in it, I think." Move on from the puke. "So how about this weather, huh? Sometimes I do miss rainy Seattle. I mean, I don't hate the sun, but I get sunburns so easily-" Yep, definitely time to shut the fuck up.

NOVA TURNER, 27, psychiatric nurse at Genesis Medical Center | FC: Maya Hawke

tw: bullying, depression Nova was born in 1970 in Seattle, Washington. Even from a young age, it was apparent that she was 'different', with almost zero interest in other people and being much more content living in a fantasy world, that was often based on the many books they consumed, ever since teaching herself how to read. She was a bit of a yapper, however, always eager to include her parents in make-believe scenarios with an ever-growing collection of plushies, each with their own name and backstory. While all of this was innocent enough, things didn't go as smoothly once Nova grew old enough to start going to school. It was from that moment on that they shut down, stopped speaking, no longer held that spark in her eyes and withdrew even more in the world of fiction. From the moment it became painfully obvious that they were not like the other kids, the pressure began. Despite being extremely well behaved and a stickler for rules, Nova was constantly 'in trouble' for staying mute when being spoken to, actively avoiding eye contact and becoming increasingly more difficult when forced to participate in group activities. It didn't take long for other kids to pick up on them being the odd one out and for them to start bullying her. Nova tried not to be affected by their surroundings, instead fleeing in fiction as they always had, whether it was books or films, sometimes even music. However, it didn't take long for it to start affecting her mental health, all the while building a resentment towards her parents for reinforcing the idea that there was something wrong with her that she just needed to grow out of. Naturally their self image was shaky at best, especially when they hit their most angsty teen years, where it became more and more tempting to step out of the reality they couldn't escape. However, Nova persisted, finding an outlet in writing their own stories. After all, if it was a fictional character dealing with the pain, they didn't have to do it. After turning 21, Nova left Seattle and their parents behind to attend nursing school in Albuquerque, wanting to turn a new leaf and use their natural compassion and lived experience with mental health to pursue a degree as a psychiatric nurse. While it was originally quite confronting and difficult, they were able to graduate with their master's degree in hand, five years later. It was after that they took on a position at Genesis Medical Center. Nova is still the odd one at times, generally lacking the ability to make small talk and hating most public spaces. She loves her job and somehow works extremely well in stressful situations, but she is always happy to come home and spend time with her pets and evergrowing bookshelf instead. People who do happen to wiggle their way past Nova's initial wall, will learn of her wit and sense of humor - an entirely different person from the one she presents to strangers. While it takes some effort to get them out of their shell, Nova is loyal to a fault and one of the most empathetic people you will ever meet.

It wasn't uncommon for him to return home with scraped knees or bruises from playing too rough with his peers or simply falling off of things he shouldn't have climbed in the first place. He loved nature and especially animals - his father often joking he had to put Gyu on a leash to prevent him from running off to chase butterflies as a toddler. Maybe his parents hoped that one day he would learn from his choices to take on any dare he received from other kids to try things, but his willpower seemed endless and defied everything else. He wasn't top of his class, but he was well liked regardless. Maybe his infectious smile could convince even the strictest of teachers. When Mingyu hit his teens, not much changed for him. However, things shifted within his family. His mother had always struggled with her mental health, but it seemed that she was getting worse every year, eventually rarely coming out of her room to eat or socialize. Mingyu's father picked up extra shifts to continue providing for his family and it caused fights more and more frequently between his parents. Then one day, things seemed to be looking up again - his mother came out of her room, dressed up nicely, offering to give Gyu a ride to school, which he happily accepted. It had been months since he had really gotten to spend time with his mother and he was eager to see her recovery. However, when he came home from school, his mother wasn't there. Nobody had seen her since that morning. In fact, nobody would see her for two whole weeks. That is when police knocked on their door to inform the family she had been found. Unfortunately, it hadn't been alive. He wasn't sure who to blame - his father, his mother, himself? One thing Mingyu absolutely took from that experience, however, was that depression was far too powerful. And as he worked through his grief, a fear slowly took a hold of him. What if it was genetic? People had always told him he was a lot like his mother, but he refused to accept that he could ever end up like her. So instead he focused further on adventure, on travel, on anything that could continue making him enjoy life and make the best of it. Sadness would always get buried and ignored, until it was sort of forgotten. He refused to think about anything bad or negative, instead diving head first into as many new experiences as he could. Moving to the United States was only his first part of the plan. And naturally, with all the rumors, Intercept sounded like the perfect place for his next adventure, far away from anyone who knew him and his past.
