colour correction

For the past two days me and grace have been working on the colour correction for our music video. This is the one part of the whole editing process which has taken up the most time. As we have had to apply colour correction to every single clip and overall what we were trying to acheive by doing this was to make our clip look more natural by either toneing down the lighting in some clips but making the sharpness of the colours better or by brightening up the clips altogether.

For a small number of clips this has been a challenge. One scene in particular is in the pub scene where the boys and girls walk in as we couldn't brighten up our main characters and extras without making the light coming through the windows in the background more over exposed. In some of our shots the natural lighting we used was more orange than expected and trying to brighten the clip was not making it any more natual so for some of the shots there was not alot we could do to them to make it look any better. So we either brightened or toned down the lighting a tiny bit and left it at that and we just changed the ones that could be changed completely. In the end we manged to get it finished and to a standard that we were happy with and to a way that we thought looked most natural.

Editing Essay

Editing is the process which allows you to cut your project/work together to create a finished film. Editing is an important part to a production because without it a films sequences of events would not make any sense as they would be just a bunch of clips that mean and show nothing and as we always film out of sync/line with storyboards as its easier to film location by location than film each scene in turn. Editing then allows you to take single clips from any location and cut them together in any order to create the story that is trying to be achieved by the director. The director and the editor have to work closely together so that the director knows that what the editor is doing is matching with their creative eye. By editing the overall achievement would be to have created a film that would be watchable for viewers in cinema it’s the editor’s jobs to create the pacing, tone, emotion for the film. The editor plays a massive part in a film overall success.

The earliest of films had no editing at all as the entire film would be one long, static shot and in most occasion there was no story and first films simply showed traffic, moving on a city street and each film ran as long as there was film still in the camera. The first film to have any sort of editing was 1903 the great train robbery had 14 shots cutting between varies events.

The main aspects of editing now are file management, transcoding, rough cut, final cut and colour correct. To have your project organised and under control at all times file management is important it may take up a lot of time but it makes the project a lot more organised and will save a lot of searching later on As all clips will be in named folders this will then set up all the footage for when its transcoded. Transcoding is the next element in editing that you have to do and it’s important as transcoding is the process of converting one file format to another that’s more suitable for editing. While transcoding as well you have to set the correct setting to all the clips otherwise you will have problems further down the line I always stick with these settings. For compressor I always use apple prores 422 frame size of 1920x1080 this makes the film suitable to watch on any device without any problems like the picture taking up only have the screen. Frame rate is 25fp and the quality is always 100%. Once all your files are transcoded and are at the correct setting and identical to the setting for your sequence and are placed in the correct folder you can start your actual edit. Your rough cut is not your final piece it only resembles your final product. Rough cut do not flow well and generally either have gaps or scenes that don’t have a natural flow or natural transition to next scene. It’s during this part of the post-production that scenes can be removed or altered and dialogue can be cut out. This is also where all the dialogue is synced and music added in. If the director likes and agrees with what you have so far then this is where you can move onto your final cut. Your final cut is where you can on board all the notes that you were given by the director from the rough cut and all the problems are addressed and all gaps are filled. Scenes flow, clean and smooth transitions are added between different scenes and sound effects are added in and any text or any final touches that needed doing are completed, this should be the point in which your film should almost be ready for a public viewing. The final element until your film is ready is colour correction or colour grading as it’s otherwise known as. Colour correction is probably one of the easiest parts of editing but it’s the one that takes up the most amount of time as you have to change each clip. Colour correction allows the editor to enhance the colour of the picture and makes it more clear to the eye, depending on the tone of the scene. If you have a scene that’s meant to be serious you can make the scene more dull/dark but toning down the colours or if it’s meant to be a celebration scene make it more bright and make colours more vivid. Once colour correction is completed your film should be ready to export which is the final stage in editing. Exporting your film will once again change the file format of the whole project to one that is suitable that it can be watch on multiple devices so that it can reach and be viewed by a wider audience.

Over the past two years I have worked on edits for many different kinds of projects from promotional videos, documentaries, music videos and dance show. I have gone from knowing nothing about editing to learning the skills needed to be able to work on an edit independently with little help needed and to gain the skills needed to work in the industry. I wouldn’t say editing was one of my strengths but through working on many different projects my editing skills have improved dramatically from my first year and I have picked up a few helpful tips along the way which can make editing any project that little bit easier. When I first start the editing process as I learnt when I was put as director for the dance show it is easier to organise all your files. As then it’s easier to find everything you’re looking for especially if you’re working on a bigger project such as the dance show and working with multiple cameras. what I tend to do is make a new folder for the project and within that folder create two separate folders one saying raw and another transcoded and if you have more than one location to film at then within the raw folder make two separate ones and label them with the location you filmed at and put the correct files within the folders. I have made this mistake before and I ended up almost losing some of my important shots.

My experience with editing has been a mixed one as I have had projects I have worked on that went well and I have fairly enjoyed then I have worked on projects that have been less enjoyable stressed me out. I worked on a project for Sainsbury’s sports relief I didn’t mind this project and I still believe it’s one of the better edits I have done so far, the only problem I have with it was I didn’t know how to start it off and I spent ages trying to work out what to do but once I got my basic beginning I had worked out how the rest of the video was going to look. On the other hand two other projects I have worked on and one currently is for music video even though the final edit is not looking to bad I was just having problems with It due to colour correction was taking ages and I couldn’t get some of the shots to look right and I did almost lose some of my shots. One tip I picked up with doing this edit was with colour correction if you have filmed in one location and you need to change the look of the shots to either brighten or darken it to save some time change one of the shots till your happy with the overall look and then just simply drop and drag the same effect onto the clips that are in the same location, I used this tip when editing for music video and it did save us a small amount of time that we would have spend trying to reapply the same effects.

My dance show edit is another example it was a 5 minute long song and when I thought I had completed it, it turns out I had miss cut it all completely as I had missed the beats in the songs and the song changed numerous times throughout the entire dance so was difficult to tell at points where the beats were and it took me weeks to re do it all. Even though it can take slightly longer cutting to the beats in the music can make you video look more effective which I did find out on this occasion with my dance show edit.

To sum up even though I haven’t fully enjoyed editing and many people do find it stressful it is still a very important part of any production, without it many films and much of our work would not look as eye catching and films would not be as entertaining or have been as successful as they were. Editing is a long process but is worth it in the end as it can produce such amazing master pieces. Throughout this whole process I have also come to realise the amount of effort that does go into making films, advertisements. As even just a 30 second advert could take weeks to be fully edited, so a full length movie would take months maybe even years.

10/06/2014- Music Video

Edit

Today me and grace continued to try to finish the edit. As we had filmed at our final location yesterday we had the footage to complete the edit so we spent the first part of the day transcoding all the footage. Once all the transcoding was done we started to work on the beginning first we looked through the clips we had and named them as we went along. We managed to get the beginning sorted in a short space of time we then watched it through and tried to make a smooth transition from the paint scene to the bowling which we managed to do after a while of trial and error.

we then jumped to the mid point in our video as we decided to break up the video a bit we would have a small paint scene in between the bowling and pub scenes which did work but we then realised we were missing a shot which would have made the transition between the two location a lot smoother so we left a small gap so we could look for it later.

We then went to our ending scene which probably took the longest out of all the scenes we edited that day as we were running out of painting shots to put into the video. so we put our ending clips in and completed our ending and then filled in the small gaps. Once the whole edited was completed we went in search of our one missing clip, After searching through all the files on the computer it could not be found, we then went to our technician and later in the day was found on one of the cards he had so we quickly added the clip in and watched through. We believed the edit flowed well and we decided we would now cut to the beats in the music.we couldn't do this before as we were missing our beginning and we didn't want to cut it to the beats in the first place then have to change it once our beginning went in. By the end of the day our edit was finished and our task for tomorrow is to colour correct the whole thing as some shots are either too bright or too dark.

09/06/2014 - Music video

Final shoot day

Today we were off campus filming at our final location for our music video. We are going to be filming our opening and ending scenes. We are filming at a crew members house in Gravesend. Since none of the band members turned up to the shoot we have had to change our idea slightly but it should still work with what we have filmed so far.

The idea for this part of the video is that the music video will open up to a girl getting ready and she receives a break up text from her boyfriend but rather than sit around and feel sorry for herself it shows her getting on with her life and she begins by throwing away anything her ex got her and taking down photos of them together. The second part we filmed shows the girl main character and her friends having a laugh and painting something onto a massive sheet the end of the video will reveal that its a heart with a crack down it, which will symbolise the name of the song vandalise my heart.

we decided to film most of the first part of our shoot with a tripod as we need very steady shoots and we filmed the second part of the shoot with a fig rig as its easier to move around and get different angles of the characters painting and the drawing itself. as we only had one camera we had to do some of the takes twice and during the painting we had to take extra care that we were getting the shots we wanted as we didn't have another camera as backup.

We started by filming the scene of Helen getting ready. we got a side shot of her so that you saw the back of her head and then her face in the mirror. We then had an idea and we made a shot so it looked as though the camera was the mirror. We placed the tripod in front of Helen but placed it as close to the dressing table as we could. In the Painting scene we started of by getting a wide shot of both girls starting of the heart. From here we got close up of their faces, the painting coming along, the paint brushes and the paint itself.

Overall the shoot went well today and we had no problems at all.

03/06/2014- Music video

Edit

Today me and grace continued to work on the edit for our music, but we look at it today and found that our sequence settings was all wrong so we had to start the whole edit again. we kept the same layout/order as before. we managed to get our rough layout finished completely as we do not have all our footage yet as we have our final shoot day still to do. But we have so far managed to complete the pub and bowling scenes and we have left plenty of space for our beginning and end. We have plans to film this Monday.

02/06/2014 -Tv show broadcast

Today in Tanya's lesson we were filming what was Left of our TV show which was the introduction to all the different segments. My job role for the morning was on vision mixing so I had to cut between shots live. I was given the script so that I could jot down notes so that would make it easier for me to know who was speaking and this would then allow me to cut between the cameras more easily as I would know what cameras the presenters were looking into and when.

Bradley and Chloe were meant to be our presenters but as Bradley didn't show up Louie had to take his place. We also had to change the script slightly as some of the segments we had planned to film didn't eventually get filmed and as Louie was in one of the segments we also slightly changed the wording for the introduction to the film review.

While filming we didn't come across many problems only that the presenters looked uncomfortable at first and they looked too robotic so we had to make sure they were more relaxed and slowed down while saying their lines and one of the cameras at the start looked really unfocused on our monitor in the booth but look fine on the camera screen so we had that problem to sort out too.

During the afternoon I went to help the other class film for their live Tv show broadcast as they had only a small number of people show up. My job role for this part of the day was floor manager, I had to communicate between studio floor and vision mixing booth this proved to be a problem in places as the crew didn't want to be quiet or listen to any instructions and we spent a lot of time waiting for Tanya to sort out the script as it didn't make much sense. One problem we had during filming was that the presenters kept tripping up on their words so it took longer to film than it did that morning.

Half term - Music video

Editing

During half term me and grace decided to come into college to start the editing for our music video as we have deadline to meet soon. We were meant to have filmed at the start of half term but the band dropped out of the shoot the day before so we had to cancel. This made our job of editing a little tricky as we didn't have our beginning or ending which meant we couldn't cut to the beats in the music in case we had to change it all again once we film at our final location.

so we did what we could. we first transcoded all our footage which took up a lot of the time. we then got to work on first our bowling scene we decided that we would just put the clips we liked into a rough order so that once filming is complete we only have to fill the gaps and cut to beats. we were naming all our clips as we went through and by the end of the day we had completed our bowling section and had started on the pub scene. One problem we came across was that most of our shots were really dark in the bowling ally but we hope to solve this problem when we colour correct.

Dance show

30/05/2014 - Dance Show

Filming

Today I was going to be down in the Miskin all day filming the dance show we had a discussion with the main dance director yesterday and found out we had to be in the studio and set up ready to go by 10. We hit problems straight away as some of my crew were running late and a lot of the equipment was not ready. For the first hour as Miskin dancers were running late as well I spend most of the time running between miskin studio and media hub trying to get our final pieces of equipment. By the time the dances were ready to begin we had nearly all our equipment apart from a memory card for one camera.

we had our set up in the studio with Luke on mid shoot down by front of stage, Jess on the left side of the stage, James on the right side of the stage Louie and Conor at the back of the studio on wide and me and Chloe on fig rig wondering by front of stage.

The rehearsals started off by doing a staggered run through of the second half, to which we managed to get through without any further problems. During break all cards were transcoded and wiped and batteries charged ready for the full run through after learning from our mistakes the first time round. After lunch a full run through commenced and we managed to get some great shots even though it was tricky as most of the dances were quick and were performed with a lot of energy but we managed to get through the whole time with only one battery running out of charge. so overall the shoot in my opinion went really well and to plan.

Dance Show

since Me Conor and Chloe were picked to direct the next dance show we have been for the past week trying to keep close contact with the miskin to find out what this dance show theme is and to when the dancers do their staggered and final rehearsals.

we found out that the theme for this show is 80's so we got told to look at 80 dance films such as fame, flash dance, footloose and dirty dancing to get some ideas.

We have found out that they will be doing staggered and final run through on Tuesday 20th we have to be in the studio and set up by 10 so that we are ready for when the dancers start.

14/05/2014- interviewing and presenting

Press conference

Today we had our press conference with Hang the bride productions. we were going to be asking question to only two members of the company Lee and Paul as other could not make it. Lee and Paul started off by telling us a bit about the company and some of the projects they have worked on. I did get a bit confused and lost at one point they they started talking loads about props. But as the conference continued we managed to get more information from them about the projects they worked on. Two which were spoken off a lot was a film called communion, which was the first project they had worked on which was about a killer priest and also a western style film. we found out from them that each project they do is funded by them from part time jobs they have.

After Lee and Paul finished talking they opened up to any questions, to which a lot of mine I had prepared before hand were taken but I managed to ask one question towards then end which was how long has the company now been running for? as I was interested to know if they had been running for a long time or for a short amount of time. Turns out they had officially been running since October last year which is quiet amazing as they have managed to achieve a lot in a small space of time.

13/05/2014- Music show

Filming

Today I was asked to step in and be a replacement for the music show as the first years had a university thing to go to. So me Conor and Matthew step in to help for a few hours.

I was asked to go on a camera that was up on a balcony where all the sound guys are. I had to get panning shots of the singers near the front of the stage and when there were no singers to focus on I was directed by Natalie to get shots of the guitarist. For the few hours I was filming I had managed to get some decent shots.
