pairing | paige bueckers x reader
genre | friendship, fluff, game day, texting, smut
word count | 3.6k
warning | smut, fingering, use of a toy, lots of messaging sorry
a/n | i’m obsessed w paige’s mirror pics like i hadddd to write about them! and you guys also loved my last paige one shot, i guess i’ll feed you guys before bed 🤗
⸻
game days always started earlier than they needed to.
you’d been awake for maybe twenty minutes when your phone buzzed beside you.
you reached over without opening your eyes, expecting some random notification.
instead, you saw a message from paige.
paige: are you awake
you smiled.
you: yes ma’am
paige: good
you opened your eyes.
you: why?
paige: i need you to be honest
you sat up slightly.
you: about what?
a picture appeared.
it was paige standing in front of her mirror, already dressed for the game.
you smiled immediately.
you: paige.
paige: what
you: you know you look good
paige: i need an actual answer
you: yes paige it looks so so so good
paige: okay but like actually
you giggled.
she’d already taken the picture she liked. she just wanted somebody else to confirm it.
you: actually actually
you: post it
paige: hmm
you shook your head.
you: why did you ask me if you’re gonna argue with me
paige: i’m not arguing
you: you’re literally contemplating about it
paige: maybe
another picture came through of her in the outfit from last game.
“oh my gosh.”
you: okay wait
paige: what
you: this one might be better
paige: SEE
paige: this is why i asked you
you laughed under your breath.
you: don’t get excited
paige: too late
you looked at both pictures again.
you: first one is like an 8.5
paige: ONLY 8.5?
you: second one is a 9
paige: wow
you: don’t let it go to your head
paige: too late again
you rolled your eyes.
then another picture came through.
you: no paige delete
paige: oh my gosh
you: i’m serious
paige: what’s wrong with it
you: everything
paige: you’re so mean
you: i’m saving you
paige: okay my consultant
you: exactly, thankya
paige sent another.
then another…
and somehow, ten minutes later, you were sitting in bed with five different mirror pictures of paige in your camera roll.
you: how many pictures did you take
paige: enough
you: clearly not
paige: okay but which one
you went back through them.
one was good, one was better, one was immediately disqualified, and then there was the last one.
you stopped scrolling.
you: wait
paige: what
you: THIS ONE
paige: really?
you: yes
you: this is the one
paige: okay
paige: posting just for you
you smiled.
a few seconds later, you refreshed instagram.
there it was, exactly the one you’d picked.
you: look how everyone is talking about the one i picked
paige: don’t start
you: you’re so welcome
paige: thank you for your professional services
you: i’ll invoice you later
paige: please do
paige: wait
paige: do you like it with the caption
you shook your head and dropped your head back against the pillow.
⸻
you’d seen the comments.
you’d seen people reposting it.
you’d even sent her a screenshot of one particularly funny comment.
you: people agree with me btw
paige: obviously
you: humble queen
paige: always
you: good luck today, baby
paige: thank youuu
paige: i’ll text you after
you: okay
you stared at the message for a second before adding:
you: have fun too
paige: i’ll try
you smiled.
⸻
the game itself went by quickly.
you weren’t at the arena, but you kept checking the score whenever you remembered.
you watched little clips when they popped up.
sent paige a quick message during a break.
you: how’s it going?
you didn’t expect an immediate response.
instead, one almost an hour later:
paige: we’re good so far
paige: i’m so tired tho
you: you got it, trust
paige: i hope so
you: i’m so proud of you
paige: thank you, y/n
you smiled at your phone before another message came through.
paige: also
paige: you were right
you knew exactly what she meant.
you: about the picture?
paige: yes
you: obviously
paige: everyone’s been talking about it
you: seeeeee
paige: okay don’t make this your personality
you: too late
⸻
the game ended with a win.
you found out through your phone first.
then you immediately opened you guys message thread.
you: GOOD GAMEEEEE
a few minutes passed.
nothing.
you figured she was busy, celebrating, talking to teammates, whatever happened after games.
so you put your phone down and went back to whatever you’d been doing.
⸻
it was later when you heard the front door open.
you looked up.
“paige?”
“yeah.”
you smiled.
“good game.”
“thank you.”
you heard her drop her bag somewhere near the entrance.
then footsteps.
she appeared in the room a few seconds later, looking exhausted.
you looked at her.
“long day?”
“very.”
she dropped onto the couch.
you laughed.
“you survived.”
“barely.”
you climb over her without saying anything else. your knees sink into the cushions on either side of her hips and you settle right on top of her.
she barely has time to look up before your mouth is on hers.
she kisses back slow at first, then deeper when your tongue brushes hers. a soft groan slips out of her when your hips roll down.
you feel her hands find your waist, holding on tight.
“your eyes are so pretty,” you whisper against her lips.
she exhales a shaky laugh. “thank you.”
you kiss her again, slower this time, letting it drag out. her breathing gets heavier.
you feel her chest rise and fall under you, still warm from the game.
your hands slide under the hem of her shirt and you lift it up, pushing the fabric until her sports bra is exposed. you tug that up too, freeing her tits. your palms cup them, thumbs brushing over her nipples until they stiffen.
paige lets out a soft moan, head tipping back against the couch.
“fuck,” she breathes.
you keep playing with her, rolling and pinching gently, watching her face. her thighs shift under you. you can feel how worked up she already is.
your mouth finds her neck next, kissing down to her collarbone while your hands stay busy.
when you finally move lower, your fingers hook into the waistband of her shorts. you glance up at her, waiting.
“yeah,” she says, voice low. “please.”
you tug her shorts and underwear down together, leaving them around one ankle. your fingers slide between her legs and she’s already wet.
you circle her clit first, slow and steady, then dip lower to push two fingers inside. paige groans, hips lifting to meet you.
“you’re so tight,” you murmur, curling your fingers just right. “been thinking about this all day.”
she moans again, louder this time. “feels so good. don’t stop.”
you pump your fingers in and out, thumb rubbing her clit in time with each thrust. her hands grip your shoulders now, nails digging in.
you keep talking to her between kisses on her chest.
“you played so good today. looked so fucking pretty in those pictures. couldn’t wait to get my hands on you.”
her breathing stutters. “thank you. thank you for this.”
you pull your fingers out after a few more strokes and reach for the drawer beside the couch. the vibrator’s already charged.
you press it to her clit first, letting it buzz against her while your fingers stay inside.
paige’s whole body jerks, a broken moan tearing out of her throat.
“shit—fuck, that’s—”
you turn the setting up one notch and watch her fall apart under you.
her thighs shake. her head tips back, mouth open, eyes half-lidded. you lean in close, lips brushing her ear.
“let go. i’ve got you.”
she comes with a long, low groan, hips grinding down against your hand and the toy.
you don’t stop until she’s twitching, over-sensitive, pushing weakly at your wrist. then you ease off, kissing her again, slower this time.
paige’s arms wrap around you, pulling you down until your chest is pressed to hers. she’s still catching her breath.
“thank you,” she whispers again, voice hoarse. “needed that.”

warning | smut smut smut + lots of dialogue
a/n | i don’t know i just really love paige’s lil pregame interviews, they’re cute sooooosooooo
⸻
game days in dallas were always busy.
the arena was already hectic before most of the players had even made it inside.
cameras everywhere, fans lined up along the entrance, staff quickly moving around, and somewhere in the middle of all of it, you stood with a mini microphone in one hand and a camera in the other.
you’d been doing quick pregame questions for the wings for a while now.
nothing too serious.
favorite pregame meal, favorite song, who was most likely to be late, who talked the most in the locker room.
the usual.
you’d already gotten through a handful of players when you saw paige walking toward the entrance.
you immediately smiled.
“paigey!”
she looked over.
the second she saw the microphone in your hand, she smiled.
“oh, no.”
you held the camera up.
“oh, yes.”
“what are you doing?”
“my job.”
“what’s your job?”
“asking questions...”
paige shook her head as she walked over.
“you know i hate these.”
“well… everybody else answered so it’s your turn.”
“but i’m different.”
“you’re definitely not.”
she laughed.
you turned the camera toward her.
“ready?”
paige sighed dramatically.
“sure.”
you started recording.
“okay, paige. quick question before the game.”
“okay.”
“if you could steal one teammate’s entire pregame routine and make it yours, whose would you steal?”
paige thought for a second.
“hmm…”
you waited.
“probably—”
“wrong.”
paige immediately looked at you.
“i haven’t even answered!”
you giggled.
“you’re annoying.”
“okay, answer the question.”
paige finally gave you an answer, and you nodded along like it was the most important information you’d ever received.
“interesting.”
“what?”
“i just didn’t expect that.”
“why?”
“i don’t know. i thought you’d pick someone else.”
paige narrowed her eyes.
“okay, what’s your answer?”
“i’m the interviewer.”
“that doesn’t mean you can’t answer.”
you laughed before answering, zaza.
“okay, okay. next question.”
paige shook her head.
you glanced down at your little list.
then looked back at her, staring at her eyes for a second.
“actually…”
paige immediately looked suspicious.
“what?”
“i have a different question for you.”
“why?”
“because.”
“that’s not an answer.”
you sighed and turned the microphone toward her.
“okay. if you had to let one person on this team pick your outfit for a very important event, who are you trusting?”
paige blinked.
“that’s the question?”
“yes.”
“what kind of event?”
“a very important one.”
“that’s not specific.”
“that’s all you’re getting.”
paige looked off to the side, thinking.
“probably… odyssey..”
you immediately made a face.
“really?”
“yes.”
“you trust her?”
“i do.”
“with your whole outfit?”
“yes.”
“interesting.”
“why do you keep saying interesting?”
“because i’m kind of judging your answer.”
paige laughed.
“you asked me!”
“it doesn’t matter!”
“but there’s no wrong answer!”
“there is today.”
paige shook her head, laughing.
“okay, i’m done.”
you smiled at the camera.
“and that’s paige bueckers.”
“thank gosh.”
you stopped recording.
the second the camera went down, paige relaxed.
“you really were trying to make me nervous.”
“i wasn’t.”
“you absolutely were.”
“maybe a little.”
paige laughed.
“you could’ve just asked me the same question as everybody else.”
“where’s the fun in that?”
“seems like you enjoy embarrassing me.”
“a little.”
“see?”
you smiled.
“you’ll survive.”
paige looked toward the court entrance.
“hopefully.”
you pointed toward her.
“go.”
paige started walking away then you quickly called after her.
“paige!”
she turned around.
“hm?”
“good luck.”
she smiled.
“thank you.”
⸻
the game was a good one.
you spent most of it moving around, getting footage, talking to fans, checking your notes and keeping track of what you still needed to record.
the wings kept the lead.
and by the fourth quarter, everybody could feel the win coming.
when the final buzzer sounded, the arena erupted.
you smiled as the players celebrated on the court.
another win.
you stayed back for a while, finishing up what you needed before starting to pack everything away.
you were halfway through putting your equipment together when you heard someone behind you.
“you said you wanted to see me after the game?”
you looked up.
paige was standing there, still in her uniform.
you smiled and bit your bottom lip at her tall figure.
“i said good luck.”
“no.”
she shook her head.
“you said you’d see me after.”
“i did not.”
“you did.”
“i don’t remember that.”
“well, i do.”
you laughed.
“okay, fine.”
paige smiled.
“so?”
you looked at her.
“so what?”
“you wanted to see me.”
you shook your head, smiling.
“let’s go the bathroom.”
⸻
you both moved fast after that, slipping into the nearest bathroom. the second the door swung shut behind you, paige’s hand found the small of your back, guiding you into the first open stall.
the lock clicked.
she had you pressed against the cold metal wall before you could even catch your breath. her mouth was on yours right away, tongue sliding past your lips while her hands worked at your waistband.
she shoved your pants and underwear down in one quick motion, fingers already slipping between your thighs like she’d been waiting all night.
“fuck, you’re already wet,” she whispered against your mouth, two fingers dragging through your slick folds. “been thinking about this since the interview, huh?”
you nodded, biting back a moan when she circled your clit.
her free hand came up to cover your mouth, eyes locked on yours. “shh, mama. gotta stay quiet for me.”
she pushed two fingers inside you, slow at first, then curling just right.
your hips jerked forward and she grinned, pumping them deeper, thumb rubbing tight circles over your clit. “that’s it. let it out for me, mama. i got you.”
your head fell back against the stall wall, thighs shaking as she fucked you with steady, filthy strokes.
every time you got loud she’d shush you again, lips brushing your ear, voice low and sweet. “so good for me. taking my fingers so well. you gonna cum for me right here?”
you nodded frantically, clenching around her fingers as the pressure built fast.
she didn’t let up, curling them just right until your whole body tensed and you came hard, biting down on her palm to muffle the sound. paige worked you through it, slowing her fingers but not pulling out until your legs stopped shaking.
she kissed your forehead, then your cheek, murmuring soft praises against your skin.
“there’s my girl. so fucking pretty when you cum for me.” she eased her fingers out, glistening and slick, and brought them up to your lips.
you opened without hesitation, sucking them clean while holding her gaze. her pupils blew wide watching you, free hand sliding into your hair.
you pulled off her fingers with a soft pop, then leaned in to kiss along her jaw, down her neck, sucking a mark just below her ear.
paige’s breath hitched, one hand gripping your hip as you worked another hickey into her skin.
“shit,” she breathed, tilting her head to give you more room.
“gonna leave proof i was here, huh?”
you smiled against her throat, teeth grazing lightly. she pulled you closer, one leg sliding between yours again, but before either of you could go further the bathroom door creaked open.
paige froze, lips brushing your ear as she whispered, “we’re not done yet, mama. not even close.”

12:05 a.m.
“i bet you couldn’t go a whole day without talking to me.”
you said it so casually that juju almost didn’t look up from her phone.
almost.
she slowly lifted her head from the couch, eyebrows raised.
“what?”
you were sitting across from her with one leg tucked underneath you, scrolling through your phone like you hadn’t just said something completely ridiculous.
“you heard me.”
“no, i heard you,” juju said. “i’m just trying to figure out why you think that’s a challenge.”
“because you can’t do it.”
“i absolutely can.”
“okay.”
“okay.”
there was a tiny smile sitting on the corner of your mouth.
“twenty-four hours.”
juju stared at you.
“twenty-four?”
“twenty-four.”
“without talking to you?”
“without talking to me.”
juju shook her head, already laughing.
“you’re so confident.”
“because i know you.”
“you clearly don’t.”
“prove me wrong.”
juju held your gaze for a second before leaning back against the couch.
“fine.”
your smile widened.
“fine.”
⸻
11:17 a.m.
juju was sitting in her car, waiting for her food, when she saw a little dog that looked like deuce wearing a tiny yellow sweater walk past the restaurant window.
she grabbed her phone.
opened your messages.
typed:
this is literally deuces twin
she stared at the message then remembered the challenge.
juju sighed and deleted it.
“this is so stupid,” she muttered to herself.
she put her phone face-down in the cup holder.
three seconds later, she picked it back up.
nothing.
of course there was nothing.
you weren’t going to text first and juju knew that.
you’d probably be sitting somewhere, smug as ever, waiting for juju to crack.
which made juju even more determined not to.
⸻
5:09 p.m.
you were lying across your bed.
you had been doing absolutely nothing for the last twenty minutes.
your phone sat beside you.
you picked it up, put it down, picked it up again.
you opened your old messages with juju.
you scrolled... and scrolled… and scrolled.
you stopped scrolling when you got to your cringy high school messages.
you stared at the screen.
you dropped your phone onto the bed.
“this is so dumb.”
⸻
11:58 p.m.
you were napping, until you heard your phone buzz.
you reached for it and seen a message from juju.
juju: you awake?
you smiled.
you: unfortunately
juju: this was stupid
you: YOU said you could do it
juju: but you challenged me
you: you accepted ittt
juju: because i thought i could handle it
you: clearly you couldn’t
juju: i missed you
you stared at the message and smiled softly.
you: i missed you too, jujubean
juju: i’m omw.
you didn’t even bother hopping out of your bed to fix yourself up.
⸻
12:05 a.m.
she didn’t knock, just quickly used her key, and the second the door clicked shut behind her the air... somehow changed.
you were already waiting in the living room, heart hammering. the second your eyes met, something snapped.
she crossed the room without a word, pressed your back against the wall, and kissed you like she’d been starving for it. her mouth was hot, tongue sliding against yours until you were gasping into her.
“missed me that much, huh?” she murmured against your lips, voice low and rough.
“y-yes, ju,” you breathed, fingers twisting in her shirt.
“yeah?” she smirked, pulling back just enough to look at you with those low, heavy-lidded eyes. “couldn’t even think straight today.”
her hands were already moving, sliding under your clothes, gripping your waist, then lower, squeezing your ass hard enough to make you whimper. she kissed down your jaw, then bit at your neck until you knew there’d be a mark.
she walked you backward toward the bedroom, stripping you slow, eyes dragging over every inch she uncovered “you know how much i love your body.”when you were bare she pushed you onto the bed, climbed over you, curly hair falling loose around her face.
she kissed down your stomach, tongue hot and wet, then spread your thighs and licked a slow stripe up your pussy like she had all night. your hips jerked, with that she pinned them down with one strong hand and kept going. flicking, sucking, pressing the flat of her tongue right where you needed it.
your fingers found her curls, gripping tight. she groaned against you, the sound vibrating straight through your clit.
“that’s it,” she said, voice muffled but clear, “pull on it. show me how bad you want it.”
you tugged harder. she answered by sliding two fingers inside you, curling them just right while her tongue kept working. every thrust of her fingers made a wet sound that filled the room.
“fuck, ju—right there,” you gasped.
“i know, baby. i got you.” she looked up at you, eyes dark, lips shiny. “keep talking. tell me how it feels.”
“so deep… oh fuck! don’t stop.”
and of course she didn’t.
she fucked you steady with her fingers, tongue circling your clit, free hand gripping your thigh to keep you open. when your legs started shaking she slapped your ass once, sharp and loud, then rubbed the sting away.
“come on,” she coaxed, voice low and steady. “give it to me. i wanna feel this pussy cum on my tongue.”
you broke with a cry, back arching, thighs clamping around her head. she didn’t pull away, kept licking you through it, fingers still moving until you were whimpering from oversensitivity.
finally she crawled up your body, kissed you slow and deep so you could taste yourself on her tongue. she rolled onto her back and pulled you against her chest, one arm slung over your waist.
her breathing was still heavy, curls sticking to her forehead. she pressed a kiss to your temple.
“never doing that stupid bet again,” she muttered. “i’m so glad we’re best friends.”

author’s note | okayyy so this one is based around that tiktok mia posted because i genuinely thought it was so funny 😭 this is completely fictionalized, but i had to turn the idea into a little story. enjoy <3
here’s the part of the video i’m talking about:
———————————————————————————
juju had been staring at her phone for at least twenty minutes without actually remembering anything she’d seen.
practice had drained her.
her legs were tired, her shoulders were sore, and she’d already showered, eaten, answered a couple texts, and told herself she was going to go to sleep early.
instead, she was laying sideways across her bed with one leg hanging off the edge, scrolling through tiktok like there was something life-changing waiting for her at the bottom of her fyp.
there wasn’t.
just dance videos, basketball edits, somebody making a fifteen-part storytime about a friendship breakup.
andddd another basketball edit.
juju scrolled.
then stopped.
the video was of a girl she didn’t recognize on cycling bikes with a few of her friends.
of course she watched anyway.
one of the girls spoke behind the camera.
“mia, there goes juju watkins.”
juju blinked.
“…what?”
before she could even process what she’d heard, mia suddenly started posing seductively while cycling.
juju’s mouth fell open for half a second before she started laughing.
“oh my god.”
she replayed it.
then again.
the third time, she was laughing before the girl even said her name.
“there goes juju watkins.”
and mia immediately started moving.
“nah,” juju muttered, shaking her head. “what is she doing?”
juju clicked on the girl’s profile.
mia dansby.
she looked through a couple of her videos braiding some of the uconn’s women’s basketball players hair.
“okay…”
she paused.
“she’s pretty… and funny.”
that was all.
at least that’s what juju told herself.
she went back to her fyp, but somehow the video didn’t leave her mind.
a few minutes later, she found herself opening it again.
this time, she went to the comments.
mia tagged viv in a comment, “@viv: put me on”.
she quickly opened their message thread.
juju:
yo
viv:
yes ju
juju:
you know mia dansby?
viv: why ju 😭😭
juju smiled at her screen.
juju:
just asking
viv:
judea.
juju:
whatttt
viv:
why are you asking about mia
juju rolled onto her stomach and buried her face into her pillow for a second.
she wasn’t even doing anything.
she was literally just curious.
juju:
i saw her tiktok
viv:
the cycling one?
juju immediately laughed.
juju:
well… yes
viv:
girl
juju:
what 😭
viv:
nothingggg
juju:
no tell me
viv:
i already know what’s going on
juju sat up.
juju:
nothing is going on
viv:
you asked me about her… something has to be going on
juju:
i only asked cause i was curious
viv:
mhm
juju stared at the messages, already regretting starting this conversation.
viv:
i went to high school with her
juju’s eyebrows lifted.
juju:
fr?
viv:
yes
juju:
what’s she like
viv:
why don’t you find out yourself ju
juju scoffed.
“oh, brother.”
she tossed her phone onto the bed.
three seconds later, she picked it back up.
she quickly followed her then threw her phone back on the bed.
“okay,” she whispered to herself. “let’s just wait...”

your phone buzzed against the gym floor, the vibration echoing in the quiet space between sets. you glanced down and saw juju’s name on the screen.
get ready after practice.
you bit your lip, a small smile tugging at the corners of your mouth even though you tried to fight it. you didn't want to seem too eager, so you took a second, pretending to be occupied with your water bottle before typing back.
why?
the reply was almost instant.
see you at 9.
your heart did this weird little flip.
by the time you got back to the dorm, you were practically vibrating. you spent the next hour meticulously putting yourself together, wanting everything to be perfect. you started with a long shower, then took time with your hair, then came the makeup. nothing too heavy, just enough to enhance what was already there.
for the outfit, you went with something that felt cute but calm. a tiny white cropped baby tee that hugged your curves and a pair of oversized cargo pants that sat low on your hips, paired with your favorite clean sneakers.
when you finally stepped outside and walked toward the parking lot, the cool la air hit your skin. you spotted her car immediately. you opened the door and slid into the passenger seat, the smell of expensive perfume and a hint of something woody hitting you instantly.
"you look good," juju said, her voice low and smooth.
you shifted in your seat, feeling her eyes finally slide over to you, scanning you from head to toe. "you don't look so bad yourself," you teased, your voice a little breathy.
as she shifted the car into gear, you couldn't help but look at her. her arm was resting on the center console, and you found yourself staring at the way her veins traced paths down her forearm, disappearing under the sleeve of her shirt. her muscles were lean but defined, the kind of strength that came from years of discipline.
"where are we going?" you asked, trying to distract yourself from the way she was looking at you.
"in-n-out," she answered simply, glancing back at you with this playful smirk. "i figured you'd be hungry after practice."
y’all grabbed y’all’s food and drove, instead of heading back to campus, juju drove further up, finding a spot that was tucked away from the main road. a little hidden overlook where the entire city was sprawled out.
she parked the car and y’all both leaned back, eating y’all’s burgers and fries in a comfortable silence that slowly dissolved into conversation. y’all started talking about highschool, the sierra canyon days and the madness of it all.
"i remember hearing about you every single night," you laughed, leaning closer to her as you popped a fry into your mouth. "like, every time i turned on the news or checked a score, it was just 'juju dropped 30 again.' it was actually getting annoying how good you were."
juju let out a deep laugh. "you were paying that much attention to me back then?"
"maybe a little," you whispered, your eyes locking onto hers.
the laughter died down, it was replaced by a heavy, magnetic like pull. y’all were sitting close, so close that you could feel the heat radiating off her body.
"you're always acting so hard to get," she murmured.
you felt your breath hitch. "am i?"
"yeah," she whispered, sliding closer until there was barely any space left between. "but i think i like the chase."
she didn't wait for you to respond. she reached up, her hand cupping your jaw, her thumb brushing over your bottom lip. she leaned in slowly, giving you every second to pull away, but you didn't. you leaned in too.
when y’all’s lips finally met, it was a desperate release of all that tension y’all had been building for weeks. it started soft, but it quickly deepened as juju pulled you closer, her hand sliding from your jaw to the back of your neck, pulling you firmly against her. you let out a small moan, your hands finding a way to her chest, clutching at her shirt as you felt the hard planes of her muscles beneath the fabric.
her other hand wandered, slipping under the hem of your crop top, her warm palm pressing against the small of my back, pulling you against her lap. the kiss grew hungrier, more urgent, as the kiss deepened everything else in la disappeared.

juju wasn’t usually the type to text first.
it wasn’t that she didn’t like talking to people… she just never really knew what to say after the conversation ended. she’d rather see somebody in person than spend all day staring at a screen, trying to think of a response that didn’t sound forced.
but somehow she found herself opening your contact anyway.
practice had ended almost an hour ago. she’d already showered, thrown on one of her oversized hoodies, and made it back to her dorm. she dropped onto her bed with a quiet sigh, letting her phone rest against her chest while she stared at the ceiling.
your name sat at the top of her recent contacts.
“…”
her thumb hovered over the keyboard before she shook her head.
“this is weird.”
she locked her phone.
“…man.”
finally, she typed.
juju
you got some gummy worms today?
she stared at the message for another five seconds before pressing send.
regret hitting her immediately after.
“why would i text that?”
⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻
meanwhile…
you were halfway through stretching after cheer practice when your phone buzzed against the floor beside your backpack.
you barely glanced at it.
you took a second to catch your breath before looking down at the screen.
you got some gummy worms today?
…
you blinked and let out a chuckle.
“she’s so irritating.” you mumbled to yourself.
you couldn’t stop smiling while typing back.
you not getting none if that’s why you asking.
her typing bubble appeared almost immediately.
damn.
thought we was cool.
you smiled to yourself.
“eh.”
⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻
the next morning came earlier than you would’ve liked.
your alarm had barely finished its second ring before you reached over, slapped your hand against the screen, and immediately buried your face back into your pillow.
“…five more minutes.”
your roommate laughed from across the room while pulling on her practice jacket.
“you said that yesterday.”
“…and i’m saying it again today.”
eventually…
you forced yourself out of bed.
the floor felt freezing against your feet, making you wince as you shuffled toward your closet. your uniform hung neatly from the back of the door where you’d left it the night before, and after staring at it for a second, you let out the most dramatic sigh imaginable.
“there’s no way we should have practice before ten.”
⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻ ⸻
by the time cheer practice ended, your legs felt like jelly.
coach had decided today was the perfect day to run the same routine over and over until every single count matched. your shoulders ached from stunts, your ponytail was hanging on by pure luck, and all you wanted was to shower and sit down for at least an hour.
you pushed open the gym doors, immediately greeted by the breeze that swept across campus.
and there she was.
the bun, the usc sweatsuit. she was leaning against the brick wall outside, one foot resting behind the other, head down and scrolling through her phone. she looked effortlessly put together, a stark contrast to how you felt in your sweat-soaked gear, and just seeing her there made a weird, sudden jolt of energy shoot through your tired limbs.
she looked up the second she heard the door open. her gaze locked onto yours with a confidence that always made you feel like you were being seen… really seen.
“…took y’all long enough.”
you adjusted your backpack higher on your shoulder, trying to act natural even though your heart had just picked up speed.
“…you waiting on somebody?”
she slowly slipped her phone into her hoodie pocket, her eyes never leaving yours. the silence stretched for a second too long.
“yeah.”
“…”
“…who?”
she looked at you like the answer should’ve been obvious. she didn't just answer, she stepped forward, closing the gap between you until you could catch the faint, clean scent of her perfume.
“you.”
you blinked, your breath hitching in your throat. “…oh.”
the corner of her mouth lifted into the smallest, most teasing smile you'd ever seen.
“that’s a problem?”
“nah.”
you looked away for a second, trying to ignore how weirdly warm your face suddenly felt and the way your stomach was doing actual flips.
“let’s talk and walk… about highschool,” she suggested.
you shrugged, finally meeting her eyes again. “okay.”
the two of you started walking, the distance between you so small that your shoulders brushed with every few steps.
your footsteps echoed against the sidewalk while students rushed past in both directions. somebody rode past on a bike, nearly clipping a guy who was too busy staring at his phone to notice.
“college drivers and bikers be trying to take people out,” you mumbled.
she laughed beside you, a sound that sent a shiver down your spine before glancing at you. her eyes lingered on your face for too long, tracing your features before she looked back at the road.
“…they do.”

———————————————————————————
you officially met juju during your freshman year of usc. well… officially. because if you were being honest, you’d known of her long before that.
back at sierra canyon, everybody knew juju. if you didn’t know her personally, you definitely knew her name. every monday morning there’d be somebody talking about how many points she’d dropped over the weekend or posting another clip of her crossing somebody so bad they almost needed directions back to the bench. she was already becoming juju watkins before the rest of the country caught on.
and then there was you.
you weren’t dropping thirty points a game or getting interviewed after every matchup. you were one of the varsity cheerleaders. loud enough for people to know your face, but never loud enough to be the headline. your friday nights were spent throwing signs on the football field, your winters belonged to basketball season, and your biggest concern was making sure your bow stayed straight through halftime.
truth be told, the two of you existed in completely different worlds.
you’d pass each other in the hallways every now and then. she’d have headphones on, backpack slung over one shoulder, walking like she had somewhere important to be. you’d be running to practice with your teammates, laughing loud enough to earn a few looks from teachers.
the closest thing to an interaction you ever had happened during a basketball game your junior year.
your team had just finished performing at halftime, and while everybody else rushed toward the tunnel, you stayed behind to grab the pom-pom somebody accidentally left on the baseline.
when you looked up, juju jogged right past you.
“…my fault.”
that was it.
you figured that’d probably be the last time you’d ever see her. until… you committed to usc as a cheerleader.
she committed to usc as… well, juju watkins.
the first couple weeks of college were exactly what everybody warned you they’d be. orientation, moving into the dorms, learning your way around campus without looking completely lost. every building somehow looked the same, your student id disappeared at least twice a week, and you were convinced usc intentionally made freshmen walk a marathon every day.
basketball and cheer shared the galen center, but your schedules rarely lined up. whenever basketball practice ended, cheer practice was usually just getting started just like today.
basketball practice had just wrapped up so that meant cheer practice was about to start.
the hallway outside the locker rooms was crowded with athletes trying to get wherever they needed to be. coaches were yelling, managers rolled carts full of basketballs down the hall, somebody was blasting music through a speaker that definitely wasn’t supposed to be in the building.
you were trying to fix your ponytail while walking.
which… probably wasn’t the smartest idea. your backpack kept sliding off your shoulder, your warm-up jacket was halfway zipped, and the bag of sour gummy worms you’d bought between classes was sticking out of the side pocket.
before you could shove them back in somebody stopped in front of you.
“…hold on.”
you looked up.
juju.
she tilted her head like she was trying to solve a riddle.
“…you went to sierra canyon.”
you blinked.
“…yeah?”
“you the girl that used to always have them sour gummy worms?”
…
“…what?”
“at school.”
you stared at her.
“…that’s how you remember me?”
she shrugged like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“you had them every day.”
“juju…”
“what?”
“i thought you was finna say you remembered me ’cause i was cheering at every game.”
“…nah.”
“…”
“…the gummy worms.”
you couldn’t even stop yourself from laughing.
“bro.”
“i’m serious.”
“out of four years…”
“mhm.”
“…you remember candy.”
“they was the sour ones.”
you covered your face.
“you are actually ridiculous.”
she smirked.
“am i wrong?”
“…no.”
“exactly.”
you shook your head, reaching into your backpack before holding the unopened bag out toward her.
“since they made such a lasting impression.”
she looked at the bag.
then back at you.
“…you sharing?”
“don’t make it weird.”
she took it anyway.
“appreciate you.”
“yeah, yeah.”
she looked at the gummy worms then back at me.
“i’m not gon’ lie,” juju admitted. “i been trying to figure out where i knew you from for like… two weeks.”
“two weeks?”
“every time i’d walk past you i’d be like…” she pointed toward you. “‘i know her from somewhere.’”
you laughed again.
“and your conclusion was candy?”
“my memory a lil… off.”
“…clearly.”
she nodded in defeat.
“you still cheering?” she asked.
you looked down at your uniform.
“…nah, i just wear this for fun.”
she rolled her eyes.
“alright.”
“yes, i’m still cheering.”
“that’s what’s up.”
“you still playing basketball?”
“…you funny.”
“i try.”
she looked at the practice clock hanging down the hallway before clicking her tongue.
“coach probably wondering where i’m at.”
“and mine probably is too.”
“guess we should stop standing in the middle of the hallway then.”
“probably.”
a second… maybe a minute passed before she pulled her phone out of her sweats.
“lemme get your number.”
you raised an eyebrow.
“…for?”
“in case i randomly remember something else about you.”
“oh lord.”
“i’m serious.”
“that’s concerning.”
“just put your number in the phone.”
you laughed under your breath before taking it from her.
“if the next text i get got anything to do with gummy worms…”
“can’t make no promises.”
you handed her phone back.
“bet.”
“bet.”
you took a deep breath as you finally started walking toward opposite ends of the hallway.
after maybe… ten steps… you heard her call your name.
you turned around to the unopened bag of gummy worms being thrown towards you.
you caught it against your chest.
“keep ’em.”
you furrowed your eyebrows.
“…i thought you wanted them.”
“i did.”
“…?”
“just wanted to see if you’d actually share.”
you stared at her for a second before shaking your head.
“you annoying.”
she started walking backward down the hallway with that same little grin still sitting on her face.
“see you around, gummy worms.”
“girl bye.”
