I am sworn to uphold the protocols of my family and to devote my efforts to the service of the bloodline, in the name of the Grandfather and by the will of the spirits. My name is Justine and I am of the family blood. I am of House Paradox and the blood that runs in me is my family's blood, and the blood of my House...  and you do not know me.”

Cousin Justine McManus. Polite. Demure. Tends to be overly formal, and therefore an unusual candidate for a time-travelling voodoo cult. Probably quite uncertain about her new role in life. Nineteenth-century upbringing means that she’s ashamed and embarrassed by the fact that she comes from a family of witches, even though it’s the reason the Faction’s interested in her. Actually capable of being quite aggressive, but only when she’s sure of what she’s doing. At the moment, she isn’t.

so, if y’all would throw any Rivers or Claras out there at my Cousin Justine muse from Faction Paradox (she’s a sideblog), that would be fantastic.

someone please give me Clara Oswald or River Song running into the New Orleans-type time-traveling blood-magic voodoo cult/crime syndicate who resides in a pocket dimension and go around messing with the Web of Time for kicks and murdering anyone who gets in their way

oh, and wear batlike vampire-Time Lord hybrid skulls from a timeline where the Great Vampires won their war against the Time Lords and dress up in fancy Victorian clothing and go into battle wearing armour made from the skeletons of Daemons

they also fight with living shadows and I just love the Faction so much someone please interact with Justine more

also, y’know, the Faction is involved in a Time War against the Time Lords/Great Houses, the Celestis, and an unknown Enemy that makes the Last Great Time War look incredibly tame by comparison (and the Doctor’s been dead for fifty years by this point) so. that’s always fun.

Rose gestured towards herself by moving nothing but her fingers, flexing them like she was opening up a paper fan. “Don’t have anythin’ better t'do. Go on.”

Cousin Justine was silent for a few moments, collecting her thoughts. “All right,” she said at last. “First of all, picture this—and I’m going off of memory: Imagine that everything is being run by a bunch of stuck-up immortals who live in the center of history. Then imagine that some of them started getting itchy and got themselves kicked out. Then imagine that the ones who got themselves kicked out are now having a kind of New Orleans voodoo-carnival across the rest of the universe, only killing anyone who gets in their way. That’s Faction Paradox—House Paradox.”

She’d been hanging around Cousin Eliza often enough to remember how she described the Family for new initiates.

“And the Great Houses—the Time Lords—what makes them different from us—‘us’ meaning humans—is that they have time running through their veins. They’re plugged into history, right down to their genes, Cousin Eliza says. They’re created that way.” She hesitated, trying to remember everything Godfather Morlock had told her. 

“You wouldn’t have heard them, but the way the stories tell it, when the founder members of the Faction left their old Houses and joined the Grandfather… I’m trying to quote from memory here, all right, so don’t mock me… when they joined the Grandfather, the whole of space and time skipped a beat. Like the universe blinked or something. Because history knew things had got messed up, somewhere along the line. That’s how the founder members lost their shadows. Their shadows got lost in the gap, and no, I don’t know how that’s supposed to work either. But the point is, they had to start experimenting, just to get their shadows back. That’s how they found out how to stick new shadows to themselves, and that’s how they found out how to stitch weapons to them, like we used to back in the Empire.

“I lost my original shadow—my spirit-weapon—when Sontarans led an attack on the Eleven-Day Empire. This one”—her one-armed shadow gave a little sarcastic wave even though neither of Justine’s arms were moving—“used to belong to Grandfather Paradox. Under Faction law, the shadow is more important than whoever is wearing it, so I could be legally tried for the Grandfather’s crimes against the Great Houses. Godfather Morlock refused to turn me over to representatives of two of the Houses, and in retaliation a TARDIS named Lolita swallowed the entire Empire. Only myself and a fellow Cousin escaped in a stolen timeship belonging to House Tracolix. We’ve been on the run from House Lolita ever since.”

“Like… War in Heaven, but no angels, no demons. More like Whigs, like Tories, politics. Or runnin’ away from home.“ Just then, something Justine said reached her brain, and she began to smile. “Losin’ shadows? Sounds funny, like Peter Pan. But dunno if anythin’ is impossible anymore. How?”

“Me, personally?” Justine’s lips twitched in a faint humorless smile. “A bomb detonated inside my shadow. As for the founders of the House... like I said, I don’t really know.”
