Conservative beauty standards are back with a vengeance which means it's especially important to go out this summer with bellies out and bodies unshaved. Also be unapologetically disabled with mobility aids and wearable medical devices and stim toys and ear defenders and all that stuff. You need it. People need to see it. Everyone needs to be reminded that life is unquestioningly more enjoyable when you're not living inside an arbitrary set of rules created by people who are offended by all the wrong things.
I feel so many feelings about Rocky during the first contact. He wants to connect SO BADLY. Do Eridians have horror stories about scary aliens? If they do, Rocky doesn't care. He wants this alien to be friendly. He does everything he can to accommodate. Here, a little gift I'm sending your way at the speed you're comfortable with. Please be there. Here, the next gift is going right into your airlock so that it's easier for you to catch. Please don't fly away. You made a strange gesture with your limb, I'll make my robot make that gesture back. Please belive that I'm friendly. Here's a tunnel to connect us, I'll make sure you can breathe in it. Please come meet me. I'll let you choose the material for the wall separating us; I'll rebuild the whole wall if it makes you more comfortable, no trouble, just please let's talk. You're all alone on your ship, I can hear it, please come sleep here where I can watch you, it's unsafe for you to be alone. I'm alone and scared, it's been 46 years since I felt safe while sleeping, please please please watch me sleep too. I'm very vulnerable when I sleep and I trust that you won't use it against me. I want to visit your ship, am allowed, question? I'm moving in with you. Let's save the stars.
does the body ALWAYS have to keep the score? maybe we could just have a friendly game this time. maybe we can just have fun without putting numbers on it
Rocky bringing Grace to Erid but in his haste to get them to start working on the food problem he forgets to describe what Grace ‘looks’ like, so the Eridian scientists and doctors eager to meet the alien open the door and what lurches out is a tall long horrifically thin shape with protruding teeth crowded around a wet orifice, long limbs that bend and sway oddly tipped with creepy long fingers made of dozens of little bones, organs on full display and a squishy loud body
Pov you’re an Eridian meeting an alien for the first time
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ILYA ROZANOV! JUNE 15th, 1991 (insp)
WAIT HOLD ON I cannot fucking believe when I was like four years old my parents were cajoling me to walk with the family and trying to get me to keep up even though I kept insisting that I was "tired" until they took me to a doctor and found out my LUNGS DIDN'T WORK. how insane that we live in a world where reasonably loving parents think their FOUR YEAR OLD is trying to be LAZY. like they were mortified to be clear. adults are just so trained to ignore children's complaints as untrustworthy, kids just need discipline, they can't possibly speak for themselves. what the fuuuuck.
YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE BTW you should always be trying to take children seriously, especially very little ones but definitely all of them. the most disempowered class basically legally defined as property and most people are like "yeah that's good actually I hate when they Loiter lol they're stupid and loud and i actually think children should stop existing. restrict their personhood more actually"
I try so hard not to do this but sometimes they just lack the vocabulary or experience to get their point across. My 8 year old was complaining of stomach aches for a long time. We had doctors appointments at least once a month for the past year for tests and follow ups and such. Then he goes to the dentist. Dentists mentions his teeth are showing signs of acid reflux-related decay.
From there we were able to ask him the right questions and he’s on a diet that’s helping a lot and he’s got the right doctor referrals but it killed me to not know how to help him for so long.
Now we have a chart with descriptions on it so he can explain what he’s feeling and where.
It might not be the same type of scenario but keep in mind: you might not be asking the right questions. If they’re trying to tell you something, keep asking
this is what the other side of trying to do it right looks like btw. my post emphasizes giving a damn and listening to kids at all, and all the horror stories in the notes illustrate how lacking that was for them. but when we adults try to meet their needs as best we can, it still doesn't go perfectly. however, I think in the end this child will grow up knowing his parents tried their best and listened closely and chased answers while being sensitive to his pain. disability and health challenges exist regardless, and love alone won't solve those problems, but it will create children who become adults that can trust that the world is worth living in, that their suffering is real and deserves correcting, that they have a voice that matters. ultimately, that's what we needed and what they will need.

There's this notion that being able to stream professional theater shows will hurt the industry, because people won't go to the effort to support live theater anymore, and this is based on the anxieties of the film industry, but live theater isn't a film. The better analogy is sports.
Look me dead in the eye and tell me that people being able to sit at home and watch The Game -- the fandom that encourages, the ongoing investment over the years, the memories and traditions of Watching the Game with family and friends -- harms the ticket sales of real live go-to-the-stadium sports. Of course it doesn't. Of course all that *is the reason* that people care so much about sports they'll invest a small fortune on not only tickets but often travel costs to be part of it all in person. And the people who aren't doing that *can't* do that and weren't going to regardless, but their at-home participation and investment still boosts the profile of pro and NCAA sports as cultural institutions.
Maybe it's possible to fall in love with film and be immune to the romance of Going to the Cinema such that you'll just freely choose the same film in the comfort of your living room. It's not possible to fall in love with something that happens live and not want to be there to experience it. The consequences of procasts, for theater just like for sports, can only be A) more people motivated to make live theater part of their worlds, aka more money, when theaters everywhere could desperately use more money, or B) more love. Which is worth arguing for because reasons I assume I don't have to defend.

I took my little brother (autistic, mostly non verbal) out and he was using his voice keyboard to tell me something, and this little boy (maybe 4 or 5?) heard him and asked me "Is he a robot??" I tried to explain to him that no, he isn't a robot, he just communicates differently, but my darling brother was in the background max volume "I am robot I am robot I am robot I am robot"
My little brother insisted if I was going to post about him, he wanted a cut of the "profits". When I explained to him that Tumblr isn't monetized, and is pretty pointless, he and my older brother pointed out that he'd still be bringing me "fame and notoriety" if the post got "big". So we agreed, if the post hit 10k notes, which seemed extremely farfetched and silly at the time, I'd take my little brother out for sushi (his favorite food) and let him eat as much as he wants.
I guess God wanted the little robot to enjoy some sushi 🍣 🥲
You’ve heard of “don’t monetize your hobbies”; get ready for "don’t master your hobbies".
Your hobbies are here to help you decompress and have fun. They do not have to be disciplines you toil over for expertise, unless that is something you genuinely enjoy doing.
It’s okay to enjoy language-learning without ever becoming fluent, or even conversational. It’s okay to like playing guitar even if you only know a few clumsy songs. You can read books and never finish them, bowl without ever scoring even halfway to perfect. We’re here to explore and play, and we cannot do that if we’re chasing perfection in everything we do.
nobody ever talks about the terrible fanfic epidemic of "they would NOT confess their love so openly and poetically as that."
big amatonormativity wants you to accept this as the norm but this is not how it has to be. we can push for consistent characterization in expressions of connection and affection. those characters could just kiss and not declare their undying love about it
reading this post back and realizing that i didn't get to my real point which is that maybe those guys shouldn't say that they're in love at all. i want you to look me in the eyes and tell me that you earnestly believe those guys would say "i love you". it doesn't have to be this way
see one of my problems w movies n tv shows is that they often show a character of like a scientist or a historian and try and make them extremely boring but that shit just doesnt work on me. theyll b like 'well in 13th century turkey...' n everyone will b like ughhh shut up professor dinglebarry no one cares and like. well excuse me. stop the movie. id like to hear more about 13th century turkey.
I'm really amused at the idea of Rocky having one-sided beef with Stratt.
