Artist, question mark? (photo of my artist pass from Shifty Bits In4rno, Fredericton NB)
Okay, shit's gonna get personal.
But question marks aside, I actually feel like I truly am an artist, at least in the way that I interact with the world and navigate life.
In my attempts to be a full-time artist/musician, I quit my day job and embarked on an 'almost' cross-Canada tour this summer, with many question marks hanging over every decision. But I listened to my gut and here I am, one month later, reflecting on an incredible journey of songs, bands, creative minds, heat, friendships, emotional rollercoasters, stunning landscapes, swims, self-discovery, short shorts, wisdom, and a sweet driver-side arm tan. I am simply amazed by how good I have it and there are so many to thank. Thanks to the people who came out and listened and paid attention and said something – you're so awesome and I'm so grateful!
Mauno (Nick, Eliza, Evan) Thank you for letting me in and embracing my songs and splitting this tour with me. I so value your hard work, commitment to music, talent, and our companionship these past few weeks. I could not wait to hear your songs every night, not kidding. I am indebted, thank you!
The Bands. We played with so many wicked bands across the country, and for the most part, seeing these folks play live collectively restored my faith in the independent/emerging music scene (a faith that is shaky at best) and I feel inspired and can't wait to hit the road again. In no particular order (hope I don't forget anyone...), I heart and thank #Whoopszo #GGLove #Banshee #TheDories #Fountain #Kin #DadaPlan #ColinCromwell #AbbyandCloe #TheLonelyParade #BusterCrabtree #KiwiJR #Boyhood #TheEverywheres #RennyWilson #ArcheryGuild #OlenkaandTheAutumnLovers #JomComyn #RyanGazzola #Crosss #RyanBourne #DumbAngel #QuakerParents
The Venues/Promoters. We had support from many good people and places. Thank you for fostering live music! (from west to east) Northern Quarter, Red Cat Records, Railway Club, 333, Abbotsford Arts Council, Infinitea, The Royal, Sleep Is For Sissies, The New Wunderbar Haufbahnhaus, The Palomino, Broken City, The Junction City Music Hall, Outofsoundhaus, The Burdock, The Garnet, Grooves Records, and many more house shows!
And HOLY SMOKES, we were so well taken care of by countless great people who opened their homes to give us a place crash. I would name all of you here but don't want my hundreds of thousands of followers to be knocking on your door. Big love.
Lest we forget Forward Music Group, Pigeon Row, Radio/Press! Thank you!
And last but not least, guilty pleasures that are the true sustainability of any tour: potato chips, pall mall, cherries, coffee, snickers, a good ballcap, conversations about creative process, coltrane, and did I say potato chips?
I had the pleasure of making this video for my friend and labelmate Paper Beat Scissors. Pre-order his new album at forwardmusicgroup.com

"Ghosts" on Exclaim! TV
Over the years, Halifax-based songwriter Gianna Lauren has been crafted her own version of folk pop music, which uses her soft voice to coat traditional musical arrangements with a haunting ambience. Following 2013's On Personhood EP, she has quietly released a new single called "Mistakes" from her upcoming fourth collection, Moon Through Window.
Although details about the new release remain sparse, she has since announced an extensive Canadian summer tour. The dates are provided below.
During Canadian Music Week, we filmed a special session with the singer-songwriter at Kops Records in Toronto, where she performed the track "Ghosts" with her live band for this episode of Exclaim! TV.
As her signature dainty vocals and light guitar strumming set a warm atmosphere in the room, she balances the set with spurs of sudden distortion and loud drums, which make for a simple yet hypnotic performance.

Exclaim’s Vish Khanna reviews the Mauno/Gianna show in St. John’s at Lawnya Vawnya Festival! Such. A. Good. Friggin’. Time.
a snippet:
“If Lauren conjured an emotionally focused Julie Doiron at times, then Mauno were her Wooden Stars. Their post-punk/rock angles and textures made the whole production feel big and uncontainable at times — a sonic force that makes Lauren such a compelling musical figure.”
