i actually originally had illicit affairs on the bait & switch list!

my interpretation was that the only time she uses a gendered pronoun in that song was when she says “leave the perfume on the shelf that you picked out just for him” with the word “him” being at a very sharp and sonically interesting part of the song.

i thought she was saying she bought the perfume to give to him, which would be interesting considering perfume is typically associated with women while cologne is associated with men.

someone on tik tok pointed out that she could be saying she bought the perfume for herself to wear in order to impress him. which would make sense.

so i guess this one could be a bait and switch depending on how you look at it!
