How on-model do storyboards have to be? And does it depend on what animation method they're using, i.e. rigged or frame by frame?
Depends on your production and animation method yes
These are what my typical Big City Greens boards look like (hand drawn 2D animation, overseas). Super tight, down to the amount of fingers and toes and exact pupil direction.
These are the boards I did for Pokémon (3D animation, in house). Could afford to be more vague
