Once upon a time I wanted to quit. Once upon a time all I could feel was the sting of the needle when the morphine slid in and I didn't have a chance to move away. They looked at me with cloudy eyes. They knew I was dying and it wasn't that big a deal. Nothing I said or did would change the outcome and it wasn't disturbing anyone really. Not even me. So who would come to the funeral? Who would give the eulogy? Some person who pretended to know me, no doubt. A wreath of flowers placed on a photograph I hated to look at and my body broken inside a dress I never chose. All this and more raging on as I just thought that if I gave in and gave up it would be so much easier and sweeter. Little ladybugs would crawl all over me and in the end my bones would be scattered into the four winds with nothing left but the incorrect memories of the people who loved and hated me. Once upon a time, I wanted to quit.

Today.

Today I was frustrated and scared and tired.  Today I was smooth and easy on the outside and rough and broken on the inside.  Cracked and ancient and I couldn't stop looking at my hands.  Off kilter and smoldering, like the broken-down Airstream I saw pulled over on the side of the road.  Modern and sleek and perfect on the skin, but smoking and burning inside with slipstreams and tendrils of smoke leaking out of the undercarriage to alert the whole world driving by that I was still about to blow.  Silent in the wrong places and left alone in the end.  Today I was on a mission to find something to hang onto.  Something that cut the need, and softened the blow.  I don't think the answer arrived.   But George Clooney is great......right?
