Richard, Dane, Jon and Rat:
One day, between 1966 (when I was a freshman at Brooklyn Prep and beginning to devour American literature) and 1969 (when we moved from Carroll Street), your Grandma Lorraine comes home from work and asks me if the name "Capote" - which she pronounced "Kapòt" - meant anything to me. Taken aback, I hesitated. She read the hesitation and said, "No, a writer, I think. I just saw his photo on a magazine cover at the subway kiosk."
"Oui, Maman," I told her, "he is well-known author. Why do you ask?"
"Because I know him. Spent several months sleeping in his Oloffson Hotel room."
And she proceeded to recount the story below:
Capote was sickly. So circa 1947-50, his doctor in USA recommended that he go down to Haiti to get a lot of sun, with a Haiti doctor contact of his US doctor to follow Capote and pursue the treatment.
Your Grandma Lorraine was doing private practice - better money than the General Hospital - and had developed a nice list of doctors for referrals.
One day, one of the doctors contacted her, and told her that he had a very good patient for her. Better still, he was an American who would pay well, and it would be for a good length of time. She would sleep in his room every night.
Sounded like a great gig, but to the young, unmarried Lorraine, there was one hitch: How could she be expected to sleep in the guy's hotel room?
The doctor chuckles, then says, "Miss Vaval, you know me well enough to know I would never draw you into a compromising situation. You will go with me to the hotel this very day, and once you've met him, you will agree with me that you have absolutely nothing to worry about."
Grandma took the job, took great care of Truman for a couple of months, made serious money, and despite neither party speaking the other's language, developed a sort of friendship with him.
And as the doctor had so well understood, Grandma never had a problem with the openly-gay Truman Capote.

This 4”square ballpoint and watercolor sketch is about the only non-work “fun” drawing I’ve done this year…and most of it was done last year. I finally finished reading this excellent book a friend gave me around a year ago.
