Wood Engraving Wednesday
J. J. LANKES
Julius John Lankes (1884-1960) was an American illustrator, wood engraver, and woodcut artist. Influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement, Lankes helped elevate wood relief prints to a fine art, executing over 1300 prints in his career. One of the last books he illustrated with wood engravings was Wisconsin author and publisher August Derleth’s Country Poems, shown here, printed in Iowa City by Carroll Coleman at his Prairie Press in 1956. Coleman printed the text in Bulmer Roman and Original Oldstyle Italic types. Our copy is a gift from our friend Jerry Buff.

It’s Fine Press Friday!
On this Fine Press Friday we present some pages from Will Bradley’s design and printing of Stephen Crane’s War is Kind, published in New York by Frederick A. Stokes in 1899. Printed on dark grey paper, this is the only edition of Crane’s second collection of poems, published a year before his death.
An artist, illustrator, filmmaker, printer, and type designer, Will Bradley (1868-1962) was one of the foremost American graphic designers of the 20th century, and this work is one of the most visually-memorable American trade publications of the 1890s. Although Bradley’s style exhibits many of the hallmarks of Art Nouveau, his aesthetic was also strongly influence by the Arts & Crafts movement. Often criticized as an American knock-off of Aubrey Beardsley, Bradley’s early style was already well-established before Beardsley’s popularity in the mid-1890s.
Our copy of War is Kind is yet another gift from our friend Jerry Buff.

Anxiety. Constant anxiety. They dont need to yell at me for me to know they are angry at me. I can pick this up by the most subtle things they do. I have become really good at gauging their mood. I would notice the hostile atmosphere without them having to say a word. This would immediately trigger my anxiety. The heart would become heavy and I would feel distressed. So yes, I understand the phrase "my heart sank" really well. I wish I didn't. Because it is not a good feeling at all.

'The Slav Epic' cycle No.1: The Slavs in Their Original Homeland. Between the Turanian Whip and the Sword of the Goths (between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD). (1912)
Mucha chose to start his history of the Slavic people in the 4th to 6th centuries. At this time, the Slavic tribes were agricultural folk who dwelled in the marshes between the Vistula River, the Dnepr River, the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. With no political structure to support them, their villages were under constant attack by Germanic tribes from the West who would burn their houses and steal their livestock. The couple hiding in the bushes in the foreground as their village burns on the horizon are the survivors of one of these attacks. The fear and vulnerability expressed in their faces beseeches the help of the viewer. A pagan priest flanked by two youths symbolising war and peace floats in the top right of the composition. These figures foretell the peace and freedom that will come to the Slav people when independence is gained through war.
